Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

We had an overall good stay at at regis and plan to return but our room was showing some age with paint peeling in the bathroom and painting needed to be updated. For the price I expected better and all rooms to be up to par.

St Regis Prince... M, Public Relations Manager at St. Regis Princeville Resort, responded to this review, April 16, 2013
Aloha Kacey_ram,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your most recent stay at the St. Regis Princeville Resort. We are disappointed that you stay was anything less than exceptional. Bringing the room details to our attention allows us to improve and I have shared your review with our General Manager and the Director of Engineering. We truly regret to learn the details of your stay were not 100 percent exceptional, as this is certainly not typical of the level of service we provide at the St. Regis Princeville. We hope that you will allow us another opportunity to show you our improvement.

With warmest aloha,

Non commercialized paradise opens doors for you at this exquisite gem! Your only concerns are the choices and the amenities offered you. From the brilliant lobby to rooms tailored in luxury and dining fit for a king, rest assured that this is a choice property above others by far. The staff is personable and aims to please. Try the breakfast buffet...you might only need one meal that day as you sit perched above the pool, ocean and mountain vistas with Bali Hai in the visible distance. Amenities are many and the concierge will go beyond the extra mile for you. Hotel shopping is exceptional. Do partake in the native setting of the sun ceremony on the barside balcony...it's worth it and comes at no charge with the benefit of free bubbly while outriggers challenge each other on the waters below! Convenient to other Princeville haunts and within a short drive of other congenial locations and activities. While you are there do not miss the helicopter tour of the island. It is a highlight not to be missed. This was definitely a honeymoon highlight. Oh, and if you are going, please pack my husband and I in your suitcase. We would dearly love a return trip on a moments notice.

Room Tip: Ask for waterfront if possible...the mesmerizing view is at least half the value!

Hotel was nice and staff were very friendly and helpful. Some things seemed outdated or needed a fresh coat of paint, but overall was a nice hotel. Restaurant/bar staff customer service was excellent!

Room Tip: we had an ocean view room which I would have been disappointed if we did not.

We stayed here with our three children in March 2012. The views are spectacular; unfortunately, we booked the Garden View with Terrace room (hoping for an upgrade on arrival - but the hotel was full) so we did not have the spectacular sunset view enjoyed by most of the rooms.

The bathroom is odd: two steps up into a shower/tub combination with a see-through glass window into the room. A switch makes it opaque, but if someone is in the bathroom, the light is annoying for anyone trying to sleep in the bedroom area. Water pressure was not good.

The hotel was full and service was harried and not up to the task, quite honestly.

Breakfast buffet (included with our room under Amex deal) was awesome. Kids enjoyed the pool area. Beach was very small.

Kauai Grill was very good for a dinner out without the kids but also very expensive. Go before sunset to enjoy the view.

Concierge and valet were very helpful with sightseeing, etc.

The St.Regis is the place to stay in Kauai simply because of its location. It may not be the best hotel; may not have the best service; may not have the most luxurious rooms; may not be the most architecturally friendly hotel. But it is perfectly located.

The hotel is situated at the peak of the Princeville cliff. The lobby is at the top of the cliff (9th floor) and the rooms are located downwards. We had two rooms on the base floor...at ocean/pool level (1st floor). We chose to have close access to the pool and ocean because we have three kids, who are often asking for things in the room (goggles, fins, toys, etc.). If we had rooms on the top floors, we would have more view, but it would have been tedious to go all the way to the rooms for the kids things.

The other hotels in the island that compete with the St.Regis are located in the south part of the island. It is beautiful there, no question about it. The beaches are worth visiting. However, they are not as private as the one at the St.Regis. If you want to go to a beautiful beach in the south (Poipu), just know that you will be accompanied by half of Ohio. At the St.Regis beach, it is occupied by primarily Folks from Princeville.

The hotel itself is stuffy. I would prefer for it to be more Hawaiian. Too much is indoors. There is no fine dining outdoors, which is a shame. The only restaurant outdoors is the pool restaurant, which is ok for lunch. Overall, the food was ok...except for the Kauai Grill, the food in the hotel was ok. The Kauai Grill is certainly wonderful. Don't miss the Macadamia encrusted mahi-mahi. It is a shame that the decor was not more Hawaiian, or that the restaurant is not outdoors.

The staff could be friendlier. Except for the staff at the pool, I didn't feel pampered by the staff. The receptionist for the breakfast restaurant still did not know our name after being there for six days. The housekeeping was late everyday. The bathroom amenities were so-so. The bathrooms are dated. Again, no touch of Hawaiian design to be found.

In the end, this is not the Four Seasons. The St.Regis competes, in my opinion, with the JW Marriotts and Grand Hyatts. However, the location saves this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have less view, but more convenient access to pool and beach.

the best location, views and service ever. the hotel rooms themselves are not up to par as other st. regis or 5 star hotels, but the location in Princeville makes up for it all. service was top notch too. The pool is great and nice but not necessarily a kids pool with no water slices or water falls etc.

The views from the St. Regis Princeville are out of this world. Sadly the quality of the rooms and service are not.

The St. Regis did NOT renovate the old bathrooms.....they still have the same old stone tile and dated fixtures as before....and plastic bath tubs. In short, the bathrooms don't meet current five star standards.......and at $1000/night a separate bathtub and separate shower is a realistic expectation.

Bathrooms aside, the rooms are comfortable but ordinary. Again, you are paying for the location and view.........and the name 'st regis' (without any real meaning behind it). Butler service is mixed. Sometimes it was 'on it' , at other times it was revealed that there was only one person on staff servicing over 50 suites.

Can't give a review of the spa.....because upon arrival we were told that there were no appointments available until AFTER our departure. The excuse: the hotel was at capacity. To my mind, a five star hotel should be able to deliver exemplary service even if all their rooms are full. Not so at St Regis Princeville.

Dining at the hotel was a mixed bag. The breakfast buffet was pathetic (limited options, tired looking, etc).....so we only ordered off the menu. The kitchen seemed overwhelmed and our order came out at a glacial pace.

The ONLY lunch option (despite being a huge hotel) is the poolside restaurant. It has a limited menu, a limited wine list, slow service, a mediocre view (compared to the other restaurants) and you have to contend with the smell of chlorine and the sounds of screaming kids in the pool. Overall, just not so great......and definitely not a five star experience. Why is management cutting costs (by only having one dining option) at the expense of guests who are paying a fortune to stay at this hotel?

The dinner options are more varied. The food at the signature restaurant is, in fact, quite good. But at a restaurant that has steaks on the menu priced at $70 (yes, seventy dollars)......shouldn't it be?

Now, room service. I can honestly say, the St. Regis Princeville has the worst room service I have ever known. Extremely slow, extremely rude, extremely under trained. As an example: after waiting an hour for an order I politely called to check on the status of the order. A nice woman answered the phone and put the receiver down to check (without putting the call on hold)....the man beside her said, "tell dat idiot he gotta wait". Now, I'm not sure if that was directed at me....or another guest. Either way, to have hotel staff speaking about guests in this manner is totally unacceptable. I asked for a manager and the female room service employee told me, "I'd like to speak to a manager too, I have been trying to reach one for an hour".

Ultimately I did speak with the Manager on Duty. He apologized and offered to give me a monetary credit, which I declined. However, I was extremely surprised and disappointed that there was no personal note or personal follow up of any kind on departure. In short, at a brand that is about 'high standards' the St. Regis Princeville is employing staff that can be downright hostile to guests and managers who don't do anything to indicate that they actually care about the guests. Vacation time is precious......it kills me that I wasted it on this property.

Ultimately, Princeville is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It's worth a visit...and the St. Regis surely has the best view of it. But prepare yourself for high prices, an older property (that's been fluffed but not redone), so-so food and service. A high end property rental would almost certainly be a better alternative.
