“Second year in a row- Love this place”
Reviewed July 9, 2010

We are owner at the Maui Ocean resort villas and have traded to stay at the Kauai location two years in a row.
Gosh....I love this place

-It is on the smaller side so it has an intimate feel. You really feel comfortable and at home. We stayed in Poipu at the Shearton for a few days and couldn't wait to get to the Westin
-Great variety of WARM pools. The pools in Maui were freezing
-It is on a lot of land and they didn't try to cram too many buildings on the property (like Maui) So it feels spacious and open

The resort had the best service i have ever had at a hotel.
-They accomodated my room request
-Had the same employees working as last year that even recgonized me
-When you made any type of request, they would call you back to make sure you got what you needed
-They helped my put my groceries away
-They helped me to extend my room for an extra night due to a late flight when the hotel was completely sold out
-I didn't have enough ice for my ice chest from the freezer, so they brought me a whole bag of ice

I could go on and on..............it was incredible..............

The only thing is you are not right on the beach, but property is so beautiful, it doesn't really matter. Each day we would just get in our rental car and go explore the island.

The only thing I didn't like was how they moved all the small tables by the BBQ areas and added large ones. Sometimes you would have 2 people sitting at a table that can seat 6-8 and that meant that often times there was not enough tables by the BBQs to eat at.

We are going with some friends to Maui in Sept and wish we were going back to Kauai instead

Enjoy

Great location on North Shore. We got upgraded to 1 bedroom with full kitchen, dining room, living room and laundry in room. Loved it. Service at the bar was a little sluggish. St. Regis is sister hotel next door with killer beach and views. Shuttle to the St. Regis every hour. We used the free grills by the pool and had fresh caught fish a couple of nights. North side of the island is way better than the south side. Kauai is now our favorite island!

For those expecting all the amenities of a Westin you are in for a disappointment. This is basically '"time share hell". If you own one of the properties you might like it. But we were struck by the shoddy grounds, poor service and convalescent hospital type feel to it.
You notice it the minute you pull up. The valet crew basically stands there and continues their conversations. At the desk we were given a 10 minute lecture what we could not do but little what we could.
You charged $9.00 a day for the right to fight for a parking spot or walk a long, long way. Housekeeping would show up between 3:30 and 4:30 to make up your room and then do a poor job. Most importantly, much of the staff there looked unhappy, which was rather surprising as even with poor service facilities the staff at least acts like they want to be there.
The rooms are adequate and the pools nice. Also if you can get off the property, the surrounding areas are awesome.
The best part of the stay? The restaurant is very relaxing and has a very good food. We travel frequently to Hawaii and have done so for 30 years for business and pleasure.
We will return to Princeville but clearly will not stay at this Westin.

We recently returned from a 1 week stay at the Westin Princeville villas in early June. It was our first time visiting the resort and our second time to Kauai's north shore. We became Starwood owners the previous year while vacationing in Maui and chose the Kauai location based on our first trip there 14 years earlier.

The hotel is only 2 years old so the property is very modern and up-to-date including WiFi access and flat screens in all the rooms. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit on the first floor of building 3 which looked out across a grassy area right at the ocean. As mentioned in other posts, the property is high above the beach, so not directly beach accessible, but there is a frequent free shuttle to the beach at the nearby St Regis hotel which fronts Hanalei bay. We had free parking on the property but I've heard that they may charge a daily parking fee to non-owners.

The pools were clean and not too cold. They have several smaller pools on the property with spas in addition to the main pool area. We never had a problem finding chairs, unlike many larger hotels we have visited. They also have a large number of gas grills available which we used for several dinners.

We didn't eat at the onsite restaurant, Nanea, so I can't offer an opinion on the food or service there. We did eat at Hanalei pizza which was very good (very casual) and we also ate at Eastside in Kapaa town which was very good. Activites included kayaking down the Hanalei river to Hanalei bay, zip-line tour at Princeville ranch, helicopter tour with Blue Hawaii, hiking along the NaPali coast and golf at the Prince course and Kauai lagoons at the Marriott property, near the airport.

Everything is very expensive (gasoline, food, dining) so be prepared. We ate most of our breakfast and lunch meals in our room with groceries from the local store, but even that is pricey.

The drive from the airport to Princeville is about 45 minutes and easy to navigate but they are doing bridge construction just north of the airport which can add an extra 20 or 30 minutes depending on if they are working that day or not. You really do need a rental car to take advantage of the island. The beaches are all public and we snorkeled at Tunnels beach and Annini beach which were both calm and had a modest amount of fish and reefs to explore. We even saw a couple of sea turtles while snorkeling. I would also recommend hiking some of the Kalalau trail from Ke'e beach which is at the end of the road past Hanalei. It is a moderate hike which can be as short or long as you wish. My 76 year old mother-in-law was able to hike with us without difficulty.

There is not much nightlife on the North shore and not a ton of restaurants nearby but if you want a relaxing family vacation with beautiful ocean views and a laid-back feel i would highly recommend the Westin Princeville ocean villas.

I LOVED the Westin Princeville. The whole hotel and staff was magnificent! Upon check in the check in staff was nice and very professional which I liked and showed me all the little details about the hotel. Then we went to our room and it was the 1 Bedroom Villa and it was very nice, clean and comfortable. It had a washer and dryer, a full kitchen, dining room, living room with T.V, bedroom with king bed and T.V and a very big bathroom with a separate shower and tub with double sinks. The resort itself was also very nice with 3 pools, nice ocean views and pretty good restaurant. If you want beach access you can take the complementary shuttle to the St. Regis Princeville. The city of Princeville is very secluded and the only problem was that it had pretty much no restaurants within that area. You would have to drive to Lihue and Poipu for more selections. But overall, the whole stay was very nice and I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

My family of four stayed at the Westin for two nights after staying at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu for three nights. We thought that we'd be getting basic accommodations with not much room and, boy, were we pleasantly suprised. The Grand Hyatt had the most gorgeous grounds and the rooms were of decent size but our "studio" at the Westin villas, the least expensive of the rooms, was roomy, beautifully laid out and furnished, comfortable and homey. The kitchen had granite counters and the large bathroom had a marble bathtub, separate shower with wonderful shower heads, and two sinks. The bathroom had separate entrances so that one did not have to enter the master bedroom to get to it. The kitchen had all necessary utensils; the king-size bed in the Master bedroom was extremely comfortable. The sofa bed in the living room was equally comfortable; my kids were content to hang out and watch tv. Outside, the pools and the grounds were beautiful. Picnic tables and large gleaming grills were everywhere for use and most of the guests did use them. There is a Foodland next to the resort and fish markets close by so it was very easy to buy food for grilling. The entire resort is perfect for families. It is not on a beach but the beaches are so close and the pools are so lovely that it did not matter. It was very easy to drive to the several beaches around. The resort is a timeshare but there was absolutely no pressure to buy or to even inquire about the fact. Highly, highly recommend this resort especially for families and for couples looking for more than just a room. Would stay here again in a hearbeat, hopefully with many relatives and/or friends in tow.

Ah...the great debate: Priceville or Poipu? Poipu or Princeville? I've stayed in both areas recently (reviewed the Sheraton Kauai as well), so perhaps I can offer some advice. First of all, Kauai is not Waikiki - or even Maui. Kauai is beautiful, lush, serene...but it is quiet. And the North Shore/Princeville area is even quieter than the South. By quiet, I mean that by 9pm, restaurants were closing. And by the time we arrived back at the Westin (around 10pm), there was barely a soul around. Still, Kauai is a spot for daytime activities, so going to bed early and waking up early is the way of life here. As many say, the North Shore is more scenic and more lush, while the South is more continously sunny (and has a bit more activiity). There are some beautiful beaches on both sides. Whichever side you choose, you really can't go too wrong - and it's a small island, so anywhere you want to go is a short drive.

As for the Westin - yes, it's quiet, but very pleasant. Room and beds are very comfortable. Large bathroom. Clean. Spacious. In many ways, this feels like a nice apartment building as opposed to a hotel. No direct beach access here, but there are views out to the ocean and a nice pool. Plus, you can use the facilities at the St. Regis (we didn't get a chance to due to limited time). Overall, nice hotel. However, for a longer stay, I'd pick a hotel that's right on the beach (that's what you come to Hawaii for, right?).
