Prior to staying at the Westin Princeville we spent a week at the Westin Villas in Maui. We found marked differences in both properties and it appearred that the attitudes were different also. The staff at Maui greeted us everytime no matter what time of day with an aloha. The staff at Princeville bowed their heads upon passing us and said nothing. This did not make us feel very welcome. The resort itself is beautiful with many flowers and great for those who wish to do nothing but lay around the pool. Everything is a drive away including the beach (you can take a shuttle to the St. Regis to use their beach). As stated in other reviews the Bar closes early (7pm) and the only restaurant does not serve breakfast. As for the grounds, we had garbage outside our lanai for three days until we told housekeeping. We also found a "dope pipe" outside our lanai and notified security who collected it. With all the "landscapers" on the property one would not expect to find these things but I guess it goes back to the attitude previously mentioned. The pools were very nice however there was alot of bird droppings on the pool decks that you had to avoid. In the 7 days we were there the pool decks were never washed down or cleaned. The complimentary coffee in the room was great the first day however when we asked for more for the additional days we were staying we were told it would cost us a $1 per package. We were not charged this in Maui. Parking is far from some buildings (we were in building 3, no parking nearby) and lacks enough handicap parking for those disabled. So much for the negative now the positive. The rooms are outstanding and well equiped. We slept without distraction and even the chickens did not bother us. You are in Hawaii, even with the negatives it is a great place to be. I would recommend this property to those who wish to do nothing but relax.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms by the "quiet pool" building 2 and 3 provide easy access to the less used pool.

We loved our time at Westin. The 1-bedroom unit was spacious and could have easily accommodated a couple of kids if we had them. One of the three pools was only 20 paces off our lanai. Of course, the ubiquitous Kaua'i chickens were in evidence, and the grounds were filled with beautiful flowers and landscaping. We loved the restaurant, the ease of walking to Foodland and the other shops in the Princeville mall, and driving access to the beaches. We will definitely come back.

Room Tip: Ask for a 1-bedroom and you'll be close to one of the smaller pools. But the big two-level pool is excellent as well!

Beautiful property. Always chairs available at the pools, a big plus!
Incredible views. Main restaurant has great selection and food tasted great.
Wish the pool bar stayed open later.
Very nice rooms. Nice and quiet and relaxing in the evenings.
Airport is a very long drive away so just be prepared.
You can use the beach at the St. Regis and I strongly encourage you to do so. They do have a shuttle that will take you there.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor so you get a better view.

After spending a week in Maui, we went to Kauai and stayed a week at the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. This was our third trip to Hawaii but the first time we have visited Kauai.

After a scenic drive up the coast from Lihue, we arrived at the resort. It was a little hard to find but well worth it. (Thank heaven for the big Princeville sign where you turn off the main road).

We were immediately impressed with the makeup of the resort. It was smaller than most of the other resorts we have stayed in, but this made it very peaceful and relaxing. It was meticulously maintained and landscaped, as we have come to expect from the Starwood properties.

Our check in was effortless. James, at the front desk, was very pleasant and helpful. We were given a one bedroom villa in building six, with a view of one of the pools and the ocean beyond. The villa was very nicely appointed. I was especially impressed with the kitchen - it looked like it had just been lifted from a designer home show! And as always, the heavenly beds are just that - heavenly.

We really enjoyed the pools on the property. There are two pools behind the lobby which are connected by a waterfall - a unique design. And the pool closest to the ocean (and our villa) is
smaller but no less unique - you can swim to the edge of the pool, look out over the hedges, and see the ocean...almost feels like you are IN the ocean.

Ah yes, the roosters. There are several of them roaming around the property, as well as nene and other birds. The crowing didn't bother us at all - my wife is a very sound sleeper, and I'm usually up at the crack of dawn anyway (even on vacation).

There is no beach at this resort, but a shuttle will take you to the beach at the St Regis a couple of miles away. We only made this trip once - the St Regis is a beautiful hotel, but a little intimidating for me - I felt awkward walking through the lobby in a swimsuit carrying a beach towel. And I wasn't all that impressed with the beach there - too hard on our feet. I will say the St Regis staff was quite accommodating - we ordered lunch while on the beach and they were very prompt and courteous.

We cooked most of our meals ourselves, and also used the barbecue grills a couple times. There is a Foodland grocery store just down the road from the resort - we were able to get everything we needed there. We did have dinner in Hanalei twice - good food, expensive, but we expect that anywhere in Hawaii. We also had the Sunday brunch at Ninea, the resort's restaurant. This I highly recommend - the prime rib and seafood were outstanding!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the staff here. They were fabulous! Always helpful, courteous, and wanting to help make our stay more enjoyable. Madison, our concierge (one of the nicest people we have ever met in all our years of travelling), always took the time to say hello to us and see if there was anything we needed. Thanks for everything, Maddie!

All in all, a perfect vacation experience. Our next trip to Hawaii will be in 2-3 years, and we will DEFINITELY return to this resort. Aloha and mahalo!

Room Tip: Building 6, toward the rear, is close to the smaller pool and has a good view of the ocean.

We are owners here but had not been to Kauai since the resort was finished several years ago. We were not disappointed. The fact that all the buildings are only 2 or 3 stories and are spaced around beautiful green lawns give it a spacious feeling. In addition to the main pool, there are 2 smaller plunge pools on the grounds; one of them was just outside our room. In addition, there are barbecue areas with pleasant seating handy to each building. The fully equipped kitchen makes it possible to eat in whenever you like. (A fancy microwave oven with grilling and other special features replaces a conventional oven.) Restaurants in this area of the North Shore are expensive, and the on-site restaurant Ninea is no exception, but we decided to try it on their Thursday Prime Rib night. The prime rib was fantastic: perfectly roasted with garlic and herbs, served with Yukon gold mash and local baby green beans. Highly recommended!

There is no beach on this property; a shuttle takes you to the beach at the St. Regis Princeville, but the snorkeling there is nothing special. So for parties with children and teen agers, this is not ideal. There are many good beaches on the North Shore, but you have to drive to them. The other thing I would like to see here is a casual restaurant that is open after 6:00 pm, when you don't feel like cooking and are hungry for a burger or fish tacos.
