We recently stayed there for a week with my parents and two children. The property was geared for all different lifestyles. There were 4 beautiful pools, one for the kids, three hot tubs, a kids center, activities throughout the day offered to the guests. Beach access, even though it was not a large beach at all. The workout center was state of the art, the rooms were clean and beautiful! Everyone there was sooo helpful and friendly including other guests. The BBQ pits were all over the grounds and were very clean. The restaurant was nice in case you wanted a nice dinner. It was all around an amazing experience!!

Room Tip: I think the best views are in building 7 and 3.

We relate to the review dated September 28, 2012 by Happy Vagabond wherein he writes about the uncomfortable start to their Kauai vacation when the concierge became incredibly rude when they declined to attend the vacation ownership presentation. We wish we had been as wise as Happy Vagabond and simply said no thanks to attending the presentation. More about this below.

The actual resort is lovely, set out on many acres on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We were assigned a ground floor studio villa in building number six, which was quiet and had ocean glimpses when we were on the patio. Even though we weren't in a full size one bedroom villa, we felt we had plenty of room, luxury and comfort. The villa was immaculate and beautifully appointed, with a well equipped kitchenette, washer and dryer, bathroom with both a tub and shower and the renowned "Heavenly bed". My husband loved the shower, even saying that he wants us to buy the same brand of shower head when we need to replace any in our house. The grounds were very well maintained, with attractive gardens, and several pool areas, a few of which are more secluded for those who want tranquility. There are deluxe barbeques in numerous areas of the grounds for the guests, with nearby tables for dining. One evening, we dined at the hotel restaurant, Nanea which was surprisingly good. We had the three course set menu, which included a cocktail. It was not only delicious, but also good value.

I am giving this property an average rating despite what I have just written because from the outset, we were being manipulated and directed towards the vacation ownership presentation. We had come to this resort on a package deal we had received in the mail earlier in the year. The deal included the room rate, a $75 resort certificate and $185 toward an Avis rental car. We picked up our car at the airport, were advised that we had the credit by the Avis representative and then checked into the Westin Princeville. While the woman who checked us in was very pleasant and competent, she had evidently been instructed not to give guests on this package deal the $75 credit while they checked in. Instead, she advised us that we were to see a specific concierge, who would give us our $75 credit and "other gifts". My husband and I didn't go immediately to see the concierge. We went to our villa and were just settling in when we got a call from the concierge, requesting that we come to see her. We debated simply not going, as all we would be forfeiting would be a $75 resort credit. However, in a spirit of cooperation, we went. She was very smooth with us and said that she would give us a $75 resort credit and a further one of $100 if we attended a one and a half hour presentation. For reasons I still don't totally understand, we agreed somewhat hesitantly to go. We have no interest whatsoever in owning a 1/52 interest in a Westin Princeville villa even though the value of that interest is transferable to other Starwood properties throughout the world. We travel extensively including to places like remote Greek islands where Starwood has no presence and, frankly, where we would far rather stay in a locally owned hotel, inn or resort which has a high score on Tripadvisor.

We attended the presentation on our last full day at the resort. To our surprise, we were assigned our own person for the "presentation" which was, in fact, an aggressive and strategic sales onslaught. We resisted the sales pitch of the first person, who requested that we then meet with her manager, whose role was obviously to explain the financial "advantages" of buying a fractional vacation ownership, offer additional incentives and close the deal. This manager was very seasoned, but slick and aggressive in his approach. When we refused to purchase a vacation ownership, we were seen by a third person, whose ostensible role is to review with you how you felt about the presentation. While she did ask this question and I hastened to tell her it had been overly aggressive, her real role is to see if you will come back in a year or two on some other deal they arrange through the resort on the condition you endure this presentation again. No thanks...

We are both Canadian lawyers, with backgrounds in trial work, so we weren't traumatized by the aggressive sales pitch. However, we were both exhausted after this process. We also think that some people could be very vulnerable to the aggressive sales tactics, succumb and buy a vacation ownership. We also feel we have a duty to tell anybody who is considering buying a vacation ownership from Starwood or any other company that he or she should NOT close the deal without first obtaining legal advice. While our backgrounds aren't in real estate and wills and estates law, many serious issues or concerns arise: Is the maintenance fee subject to increases? What happens if you or your spouse becomes disabled or sick and you no longer use your vacation time? Can you easily sell your vacation ownership share to a third party or can you relinquish it to Starwood? In the event you can't divest yourself of your vacation ownership and don't use it, are you still obligated to pay the (currently) $2600 per year in maintenance fees? What options does your child or do your children have if, once you have passed away, he/she/they decide they don't want to use the vacation ownership and/or be liable for the maintenance fees? Does Starwood have the right to impose extra fees in the event of damage caused by a hurricane, tsunami, fire or other disaster? These are just a sample of some of the issues we see.

To summarize, say no to the presentation and if you're actually interested in purchasing a vacation ownership, get legal advice before signing anything.

We booked the Westin Princeville with the advice from our Travel agent who had stayed here before and had nothing but wonderful things to say about her trip.. we arrived in Lihue at 9:30am - after baggage claim, retrieving our rental car, and heading to Princeville.. we arrived to Princeville just before 11am.

Checking in: The grounds were beautiful and we were instantly greeted by the valet staff with Aloha & advised us that we could preregister. We had planned to go to the Sunday brunch at Nanea, so it worked out perfectly. Qian at the front desk was incredibly helpful and friendly. She answered all of my questions & was incredibly pleasant the entire time. The Westin is trying something called green, if you choose to not have your room serviced, the resort credits you $10 at the poolside bar, nanea, or the market. You get a green card once a day. As we were walking down to Nanea, Qian gave me a call and let me know that as soon as we were done with brunch, we could head to our room since it was ready! We were so happy - we thought we were going to have to wait until 4pm!

Sunday Brunch at Nanea: I had read a mix of reviews of Nanea's Sunday brunch - but, we decided we really wanted to kick our vacation off right, and our agent advised us that this brunch was delicious. She did NOT lie. The brunch spread was INCREDIBLE - fried rice, salad, ahi poke, fresh ahi, assorted fruits, omelet station, waffle station, sausage, bacon, fresh shrimp, and assorted desserts. The food tasted amazing & the service was excellent as well. Our waitress continued to replenish our guava mimosas throughout our meal and was attentive the entire time. If you have to try one thing at this brunch, it's the Kalua Pork Benedict.. it was that good! & we used our first green card so it was $10 cheaper!

Room: Our room was beautiful and we had a great view of the Princeville Golf Course and the beach. The washer and dryer, fridge, stove top, & microwave were so convenient for a week long stay! We had enough towels, toilet paper, tissues, wash cloths, extra sheets, and blankets to last us our entire trip.

Staff & Service: This is what made the Westin stand out from all other resorts and hotels that we have stayed at. We had forgotten a toothbrush & room service brought it up with travel toothpaste, free of charge! On our first night, we had gotten a knock on the door & we hadn't ordered room service.. we answered the door and were pleasantly surprised to see room service with two separate dessert plates written, Happy Birthday, for my boyfriend and myself. Upon check out, we had disclosed to Qian that we were in Kauai celebrating our birthdays. Such a surprise & a delicious dessert; the same night we had ordered room service because we couldn't decide what to eat, and it came up in 30 minutes (the food was delicious by the way!) We are so used to visiting Oahu that coming to Kauai was completely foreign to us and the concierge staff the Westin was incredibly helpful and friendly whenever we had any questions. Madison, especially was so awesome! She let us know about all of the local places to eat at and the things we needed to see during our time there. We were a little hesitant about booking the luau at Tahiti Nui, but it turned out that was her family's restaurant and we are SO happy we stuck with it. She called in for tours for us & showed us exactly where we needed to go on the Kauai map. Poolside staff at the Wailele Bar was great as well - attentive and quick. Exactly what you'd hope for when you're getting a tan by the pool and parched.

Parking: Self-parking, $13/day. Lots of spots, never any trouble finding parking during our stay. You pay the entire balance at the end of the trip. No resort fees =)

Gym: The gym is open 24 hours/day which was great for us because we were up at 4:30am (still on SF time).. the machines, free weights, sauna, steam room, and core training zone were well kept, clean, & there was never a wait or too much traffic when we went.

Pool: The pools were amazing & beautiful! Never too crowded & you can always find a lounge chair. The poolside staff were very helpful and you never had to wait too long!

Check-out: Check out was super easy and quick. I was able to collect my invoice and pay my balance right up front. She even offered us a hospitality room to use if we had a late flight, completely unexpected and extremely thoughtful!

Other things: We didn't get a chance to use the on-site BBQ grills, but we saw lots of families utilizing the grills at night time! The market even has foods to grill to purchase. The Westin has a shuttle that drives guests to the St. Regis beach, we didn't utilize this either. But, we did see a # of people waiting and being transported to the beach regularly. We had a car, so we just chose to drive to the other surrounding beaches.

SPG: The Westin guests are able to utilize the St. Regis beach & eat at any of the restaurants on the St. Regis property as well as the Sheraton on the South Shore! Perks of staying at a Starwood property!

Overall, 5 stars definitely! When we come to visit Kauai again, we will definitely stay at the Westin. The staff and service contributed to the positive and memorable experience..truly exceptional!!

Beautiful property & nice Westin amenities. Fantastic pools. & a great on site restaurant . Only negative was at check in when we were required to meet with timeshare concierge who at first was overly nice then turned incredibly rude / negative when we said "no" to the presentation - a very uncomfortable start to our Kauai vacation.

My wife booked our trip on a whim through an advertisement she received on Email and all though we never fall for those, we did this time and boy am I happy we did! Aside from the amazing rate we were given we have had nothing but exceptional service. As the trip date got closer our concierge, Judy made sure everything was booked and we were satisfied. When we checked in, again unprecedented service. Qian (I hoped the spelling is correct) who checked us in was top of her class, she offered us an upgrade to a one bedroom suite and wow! We were put in a room overlooking the golf course with a spectacular ocean view. It is only day 2 but because of Judy and Qian we are already planning the next trip back. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! The lesson here is, if you have a good feeling on a whim..just go for it!

Room Tip: North side ocean view
