“Whalers Cover #212 is a Gem”
Reviewed May 8, 2010

My husband & I stayed for 4 nights at Whalers Cover #212. Rental arrangement were made thru Great Vacation Retreats (www.greatvacationretreats.com) and went without any hitches. #212 is very well maintained with nice furniture, art work & decor. Condo felt large and was a single level. King bed in master bdrm was perfect - not too soft nor too hard. Condo has a great location in a corner of the resort right near a cove (with sea turtles) and a great view of the ocean. Lanai is large and felt very private. Washer/Dryer is in guest bathroom. Pool at WC was great - very refreshing. BBQ grill can be found in pool area. Condo had beach chairs, beach umbrella, beach towels, cooler etc. This condo is a gem - the best condo we have stayed in.

Whalers Cove Resort was one of the best places we have ever stayed. This was our first visit to Kauai and I realize we don't have much to compare it to, but we'd go back in a heartbeat. We were given what I think might be the best view there. Unit 124. It faces the ocean and is probably the actual closest to the ocean. The view of the ocean was unobstructed and the pounding surf was a feast for eyes and ears. We sat on our lanai every morning with coffee and watched whales and turtles go by. The place was extremely clean and decorated very nicely. Everything you could want was in the kitchen. They will even fill your fridge for you if you send them a note before you get there. Everyone that we came in contact with was friendly and helpful, offering places to go and things to do. One note, if you don't want birds waking you up at 5 am, don't feed them . I am a bird lover and gave them some crumbs on our first day there and they were back the next day quite early for more. So I stopped feeding them and the probem went away.
I HIGHLY recommend this place and this particular unit as well.
The pool was beautiful as well and there was hardly anyone ever there so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. This complex is small with few units and is off the beaten path so you're not stuck with a lot of other travellers. Quiet and peaceful.
It is located at Koloa Landing which is an inlet that comes in and where turtles come to rest at night. We saw huge sea turtles everyday right at the end of the complex. There is a small stairway that leads down to the inlet and it is calm enough to get into for snorkeling and diving or kayaking.

I just got back from a trip to Kauai. I stayed for 6 nights at a 2 bedroom condo, Unit 220 at Whalers Cove. We booked the unit through Suite Paradise, a condo-rental company on Kauai, for a deluxe oceanfront unit, but without seeing actual pics of the unit.

First the bad, because it's short. The unit was advertised by Suite Paradise as a deluxe oceanfront unit with panoramic ocean views. Beware, all Whalers cove units do not have panoramic oceanfront views. Unit 220 is in the "rear building" overlooking the pool and we were partially tucked behind the front building. Standing in the kitchen, our "panoramic" view was half ocean, half rear-of-front-building. Sitting on the couch or on the lanai, we had a lovely view past the front building to the ocean. But it WAS 50% obstructed by the front building, and our whale watching was limited due to this. If you book a condo at Whalers Cove for the view, ask which unit it is and ask to see it on the property layout, to make sure you really do have a panoramic view. Also, in full honesty, I didn't find Suite Paradise to be all that friendly, their aloha spirit seemed a bit lacking, but we only dealt with them briefly and that's a small quibble.

Ok, so that's the bad. The GOOD is plenty here. Unit 220 was CLEAN. Very clean, sharp looking. Bright. The decor was a bit "Golden Girls" as others have mentioned of this complex, but who cares, it was clean and comfortable with lots of light and everything that one wants in a condo rental -- washing machine, dish washer, plenty of linens and towels. It was on the second floor, with a balcony-style lanai that was plenty big and, due to not being on ground floor, provided some nice privacy. Unit 220 was cheaper than the other Whalers units that we saw online (perhaps due to the partially-obstructed views, though this was not made clear by Suite Paradise). The people who own it had reef shoes and boogie boards and beach chairs in the closet for us to use. Beds were firm. The lanai was lovely, and although we looked over the pool, it wasn't an issue as there were very few people ever at the pool. It often felt like we had the place to ourselves. Whalers Cove takes great care of their grounds, there were pool cleaners daily, the place was immaculate. Pool is gorgeous with a gorgeous hot tub adjacent. Also, Whalers Cove is right on an amazing snorkel/scuba cove. It's a cove that sea turtles frequent, we saw many turtles there every time we went. It's not a reef cove, so the sea is more open than some other snorkel places, and that can be a bit intimidating for a novice snorkeler. However, I saw some amazing things -- including swimming with sea turtles TWICE! It's a world-class snorkel cove. Don't miss it.

All in all, Whalers Cove is wonderful. Whenever we told locals we were there, the reaction was "that's a really great complex." Although it's a condo, the phone has buttons for "front desk" (to SP) and "activities" and other connections. Help is a touch-button away, as long as it's between 8AM and 6PM. :)

I will make one more recommendation, for a company called spcondoready.com. They were the amenities vendor for Suite Paradise. We called them several times for referrals to activities, and they never missed a beat. Tom, who answers the phone, booked us on the best connections. We wanted a surf lesson, and he recommended an 8AM lesson with Sparky at Kauai Surf School. It was perfect, only 4 people in the class. 8AM seemed crazy-early when we booked it, until we had our class -- we were the only ones on the beach, a nice and easy lesson with no distractions-- then just as our class ended the beach FILLED with other surf classes, and it became impossible to surf anymore. Spcondoready also turned us on to a great sunset cruise on a catamaran, some amazing ziplining and more. This guy Tom is totally cool and he hooked us up to some great times.

Well, that's it. Whalers Cove is is a great complex, well taken care of, amazing location. Unit 220 was super clean and a joy. My only reservation: ask to see exactly where your unit is in the complex, to make sure you're getting the panoramic view you want.

We celebrated our 44th anniversary and never had a honeymoon. We selected whalers cove due to the oceanfront spacious condos and away from too many tourists and beaches. Although the beaches were close we wanted to be close to the water and away from the beach. We wanted to hear the waves and surf and no other outside noices. Wanted to see the sunsets and sunrise overlooking the ocean on our lanai. Wanted a spacious condo with an indoor hot tub in our room. The resort and grounds were immaculate and the condo was dreamy. Absolutely wonderfu. The staff were very friendly and all our wishes were met. We plan to go again but this time request an oceanfront instead of oceanview. They are both great but wanted oceanfront....

I couldn't wait one more day, I had to get back to Whalers Cove this year again. The staff greeted me like family, and it was only my 2nd time there. Make sure to book thru the Manager, Marianne Martin. She knows the island so well, recommended us many places to go, place to eat etc. I love the condos we have stayed so far. The first time I stayed on the top floor over looking the pool, this time I stayed on the bottom floor. Each condo has a special view. The whales were back and got to see whales jumping in and out of water from the balcony. Spectacular view! You get to see turtles right next to the property at night. Within a couple days I forgot about my work and all the stress of home.
I definitely recommend this place, just imagine, Super sunny south side, it's private, smaller resort, you get to cook, no kids are screaming at pool, birds are chirping, orchid are blooming. It's just perfect to me.

This property was absolutely perfect. RIGHT ON THE OCEAN!!! I got here about the same times the whales did, and wow what a site. This is a great place to getaway from EVERYTHING. Very small resort with everything you need from heated pool to full kitchens and breathtaking views. Just what I needed. Thanks again

Beautiful place. We stayed in #130, top floor western corner, so we had windows on the side of the unit as well as in front and back. The unit fronts on the ocean, with a lanai overlooking the water, as well as the house and garden next door. The lanai was huge and we could sit there for hours watching whales and porpoises. The unit has 2 bedrooms, 2.5 baths. It was clean if a little old. My one quibble was the bed in the oceanfront bedroom which was very saggy and felt old. It should be replaced. The master bathroom had a shower with a large window overlooking the ocean. If you are modest about your body and don't want the fish laughing at you, you can use the bathroom in the 2d bedroom. These condos are furnished by the individual owner, although there are certain requirements for uniform type decorations. Good kitchen alcove with big refrigerator/freezer, quiet dishwasher, three t.v.s -- two with dvd players in the unit. We only used one one night to watch a dvd we'd brought with us. For some reason our phone rang at 4 a.m. the first night -- so we disconnected it. We both had mobiles and there was no need of land lines but local calls are free if you somehow can afford this place and don't have your own phone. Friendly staff, efficient. Rooms light cleaned daily, towels changed daily, sheets changed every 3d day. Convenient to Poipu beaches, Koloa town, restaurants, and activities. It was generally quiet. Noise did not come from the resort so I am not grading it down, but there is a lot of construction -- too much actually -- of tacky looking resorts all over Poipu and you hear the beep-beep of trucks backing up most of the day on weekdays. Nights, though, are very quiet and you can hear the pounding of the waves right outside your window.

The view from the Lanai is just stunning. There is a good snorkeling/scuba cove off the east end of the parking lot. It used to be, maybe is still, called Koloa landing. Pool is small but clean, and there is a hot tub.

Our unit would comfortably have slept two couples with privacy for both. I do recommend this place if you are going to the south coast of Kauai. I'd also stay in the western building (with the 100 numbers). Many units in the eastern building have an ocean view over the pool. The western building is right on the ocean. Not that over the pool is that bad, but I liked the feeling of looking off the lanai right into the ocean.
