“We were pleased.”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We returned to this hotel after 14 years. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel remained exactly as we had remembered it and that it wasn't rundown or showing signs of aging. The grounds are beautiful and the pool areas are amazing. The pool area offers you so many options. You can rent tubes (or bring your own) and float down the lazy river. There is pool volleyball and pool basketball if you want to be more active. There are also two decent sized hot tub areas. Our favorite area of the pool is the saltwater lagoon. We used our tubes there to float around and enjoy the scenery. Both times that we have stayed at this hotel, the ocean was way too rough to enjoy (red warning flags were out) so the pool area is quite important to us. We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and we never had any trouble finding chairs at the pool, which had been a problem for us at other hotels in Maui. The food/drink service around the pool was slow, but the food and drinks were really good. A few times I had to seek out a server so I could place an order.
The buffet breakfast was not as good as we remembered. There didn't seem to be as much variety and each day resembled the previous day. The option to eat breakfast at the Poipu Bay Golf Course was new and it was a nice option. It is not a buffet but there are several options and the food was excellent. We ate dinner at both Donderos and Tidepools. We loved the food, service and the décor/setting at Tidepools. Donderos had great food and service but the décor is quite dated and just didn't have a great vibe...a renovation would really revitalize this restaurant. We ate there on a Thurs evening at 7:30pm and there weren't that many people there. Stevenson's Library was our favorite place to hang out in the evening. Great décor, vibe, food/drinks and live music every night.
The rooms are comfortable, clean and spacious. We chose a garden-view room to help save money and we were happy.
The concierge was extremely helpful throughout our stay. We booked golf, zip-lining, cab service and dinner reservations through them. They also told us about a three mile hiking trail along the ocean that we would never have known about.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to others!!

Green Features: I like how there are water-filters in the ice machine rooms so you can refill your water bottles. This helps you to save money and also reduces the amount of water bottles that need to be disposed of in the end.

We have visited the Grand Hyatt Kauai several times and it consistently impresses us. As you would expect from a Grand Hyatt, the hotel is beautiful. The building fuses seamlessly with the outdoors from the time you walk into the main lobby and look straight through to the ocean. The property also has plenty of interesting art work. The elaborate series of pools, waterfalls, slides, lazy river, salt water lagoon, and spas is fun but very well designed to minimize noise and allow for private, more quiet areas for those that don't want to be disturbed while also allowing lots of fun for kids and more energetic groups. Bar service around the pool was always prompt and the drinks were great. Restaurants were great, and we especially liked Tidepools. Service through out the resort was of a very high caliber. We look forward to returning!

Room Tip: They have a large variety of rooms for different tastes. Some are unobstructed ocean views, some loo...

Aloha larryAnnapolis,

Mahalo for taking the time to share your experience with us and thank you so much for being a repeat guest! It is truly an honor to know that you enjoyed your stay on Kauai from start to finish. We are pleased that you took notice of all the different features of the Resort. Mahalo for your kind words regarding your pool service and bar experience - we are happy you enjoyed yourself. Tidepools is a wonderful restaurant proving fresh flavors and great fish options and we are happy you loved it.

We look forward to your return to the island and we thank you again for your raving review.

A Hui Hou,

Great place to stay, beautiful grounds and service. However, if you'd like room service or need something in a hurry, be prepared to wait ( and wait long time). No one here is rushing to help you, they take their time..

We stayed at the Hyatt for 4 nights in August. No doubt, the Hyatt is really a beautiful place to stay at, we can fully agree with what is positively said so far in the many comments here with respect to the fantastic areal with the breath-taking entrance area, the different pools, the lagoon, the waterfalls, the beach and all of that stuff. What we loved most indeed was the option to leave the windows open at night and thus being able to listen to the pacific ocean rolling onto the beach. Great!

Our room (Deluxe Ocean View) as such was not spectacular, interior style and room size is average, nothing really surprising, however, everything is of superior quality, clean and fully sufficient for a nice stay.

Coming to some negative impressions:

(1) The service quality within the restaurants has to be improved. This is not on an adequate international service level. Sure, some people adore singing waitresses and the excessive as well as permanently loud use of ‘Enjoyyyy!’, ‘Mahaloooo!’, ‘Make it good ooooone!’ - fine. But hey, this is not a fast food restaurant, this is the Grand Hyatt and the restaurant staff should do their job in an adequate international decent style from our point of view. Same with the other small little bits and pieces here: fresh coffee cups or juice glasses shall not be brought to the guest’s table by carrying said cups or glasses with the fingers inside the cups or glasses, used cutlery taken away from the table is to be substituted automatically by the staff against new cutlery, and any cutlery shall not be brought to the table by touching the ‘intimate’ parts of the knife or the fork. Sure, this is only small things, but to play on the very international top level things should be improved here.

(2) Many extras are charged at extraordinary costs. I don’t see the point why an oceanfront cabana is available for rent for as less as 150 US$ per day, just to name one. Sure, running a hotel like this is expensive, but this kind of cross subsidization is way too extreme. Our clear recommendation is to book a package including the mealplan and all the other stuff so that additional costs are somehow under control.

However, the Hyatt is really good; we enjoyed our stay and can fully recommend the Hyatt for any luxury and in-style traveller visiting Kauai.

The property is huge with over 600 rooms, lovely common areas that are rich in material and design detail, and it has the best family pool area we've ever encountered. The location in Poipu is warm and sunny, although the surf was generally rough during our entire stay. We had a deluxe ocean view room with 2 beds for our family of 4, with a slightly larger balcony. Room was tasteful, recently updated, not lavish but comfortable. Overall, we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the island of Kauai more than our trip last year to Maui where we stayed at the four seasons. That experience is really the only reason why this property did not get a rating of "excellent" from me. I realize that Hyatt and Four Seasons are different companies, but wanted to stress some constructive points should Hyatt read this review. First, the "Aloha spirit" was alive and strong at Four Seasons. We were always greeted with a smile and "Aloha" vs the Hyatt which was often "Hi" or "Hello". Not to say we never heard "aloha" from a hyatt staff person but it was far less frequent. Uniforms - the four season uniforms were much nicer than the beige on tan prints the Hyatt staff wore. Kids - four seasons goes way over the top for kids. Special gift on arrival in the room, names spelled out on the tub in sponge letters, cookies and candy treats during the stay, multiple pool side snacks. Fees - Hyatt charges you $25/day for wifi, water, parking and a list of other things I did not notice or use. I found this annoying, and would prefer they just roll that into the room rate rather than tell me I'm paying $25 for the aforementioned items. Four seasons, there were no fees for anything from a borrowed snorkel to daycare to a cabana. Yes it was more per day, but after fees and rentals, not so much really. Speaking of cabanas, the Hyatt needs more of them since despite the $50+ daily fee, they were usually all gone. Bottom line, we did have a wonderful trip. Loved the island, enjoyed it more than Maui, pool is fantastic for kids, tidepool is great too. But I couldn't help but wish it were a four seasons property. It was a lot of little things we missed, all of which, I would think are easy fixes that the Hyatt could do to make the resort really top notch.

Just name it and you will find that the Grand Hyatt Kauai does it best. It is by far the best Hyatt I have ever experienced. It offers fantastic facilities, by far the best swimming, water features, and water activities in the Islands. It offers fantastic dining, great service and fantastic views from every room, even if you are looking into the lush green grounds or mountains and don't happen to see the ocean from your room. Music and an evening drink or snack on the front terrace is framed by the ever-changing sea and landscape of beautiful Kauai. Best of all the hotel manages all of this while displaying a cultural sensitivity second to none. It is inviting for visitor and residents of the Islands as well. Not to be missed, even for a short visit or a meal!

Room Tip: Every room is great!

The pools are gorgeous, clean, perfect temperature and go on for days. You could never believe this property until you get here. Everything is perfect. The rooms are not small by any means, but then again, it could be that we were upgraded to a poolside room and those could be bigger? I don't know. I've read reviews that the rooms were not large, but ours is big, immaculate, and comfortable.

It's expensive. Eating on the property might cost you your first born, it's every expensive. Two ice cream bars, is 10 bucks. The restaurant Seaview Grill has terrible food-- inedible. We ate there twice (by ate, we ordered and ended up leaving the food it was so bad). We were starving and anything would have tasted good, but it was terrible food, and no one came back to check on us, so we ended up paying and then eating snacks in the room, two different nights. This is the downside to this property. Unlike the Hyatt in Maui where every meal was better than the next and where you could walk to the restaurants, this place charges a fortune for a bad meal so after four nights, we're now facing the fact that we need to leave the property to eat. To me personally, that defeats the purpose of staying at a 5 star resort. If they are going to charge ninty dollars for one adult meal and a kid's meal (1 glass of wine and dessert that we split) then it better be a pretty damn good meal. It's not.

The spa is gorgeous, very relaxing, and you can spend the day there with a treatment. The minute you walk in you feel like you could fall asleep. I had an 80 minute massage, that was nearly $300 with tip. That was a little shocking, even by Hawaii standards, so be sure you ask about the price before you book something. That said, if you need to feel even more pampered, this would be the place to do it.

There is plenty of seating at the pool. during busy times you might have to get up at the crack of dawn to score a chair under an umbrella, but the past day or two it hasn't been quite as busy.

To sum it up, come to this resort if you have kids and feel like you're in an exotic resort, but don't eat here if you like to taste something yummy for your money. (sad that the concierge admitted she's been getting complaints about the restaurant-- but at least they are aware of it and maybe can change it up soon).

Aloha jandaSeattle,

Mahalo for staying with us and thank you for your review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the pool facilities and we appreciate your kind words. All of our rooms are approximately 500 square feet regardless of the view type (excluding suites), and the bedding configurations do differ. We are thrilled you found your room big, immaculate and comfortable and we're glad you could be near the pools as well.

However, we regret to hear that your dining experience and our prices throughout our Resort did not exceed your expectations. We have sent you a private message to gain more information about your experience in hopes to improve our services in the future. Mahalo for your feedback as it gives us the opportunity to grow.

Again, we would like to thank you for your time and we hope for the opportunity to welcome you and your 'ohana back soon!

A Hui Hou,
Kayla H.
