Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Took a 3 hour tour of this beautiful garden with our guide David. Be sure to make reservations online, otherwise time slots rapidly fill up. There is no free tour, the cheapest tour offered is $35/person and it's absolutely worth it. Bring some snacks and lots of water as you'll get nibbly on the long walking tour.

The actual "rooms" themselves are nothing special, with some meh sculptures and a couple novelty architectural pieces of interest. The true spectacle is in the plants and trees themselves. This garden has collected and cultivated rare (and not so rare) plant samples from around the world. And since everything grows in Hawaii, all the plants are *huge* and beautiful.

The tour consists of a 25min (each way) bus ride from the visitor center deep into the gardens. During that time, David our tour guide explained the history of the gardens and stopped at several key points for photo ops. Once you reach the garden grounds, it's approx 1.5-2 hrs of very easy/slow walking thru the gardens. It's mostly shaded and cool, but bring insect repellent. You pass several famous movie spots as well. Walk at the front of the tour group and ask questions if you want the next level of information.

We splurged for the Discovery Tour and weren't disappointed. Our guide was so interesting and very well informed. He had been on staff for many years- all of the volunteers knew him.
My only complaint was that I wish I knew more to ask!

Apparently they are putting in a little cafe that will use the fruits grown- now that will be good fun!

If you want to wonder around on your own- this is not the tour for you. We were escorted in a little bus for the whole length of the tour.

After the tour- we wondered about the gift shop and then had fresh sushi from a food truck in the parking lot.

Call ahead for a reservation, unless you want to wait a couple hours. We didn't have time to wait, so we walked around the entrance area. If that's an indication of what you can see, the tour must be excellent. Lots of cool flowers and plants you won't see anywhere else

My husband and I were glad we joined the tour of the garden. Hal, our tour guide, is excellent and very inspiring. There are just a lot of exotic flowering and fruit trees. I tasted different fruits and seen exquisite varieties of different flowers of different vivid colors. The landscape is awe- inspiring with the bambbos, Morgan fig trees, and the different rooms Mr. Allerton created in the garden.
This was the favorite retreat of Queen Emma.
