Attraction details
Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

“Beautiful and Relaxing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

We have visited Kauai a dozen times but for some reason never visited the Garden. We went early in the morning and did the self tour. The shuttle driver was very informative and pleasant. After a short ride to the garden area we spent two hours just walking around and enjoying the beautiful tropical plants and flowers. It was very relaxing without any pressure or large crowds. We were then met by the shuttle and taken back to the main building. Don't pass up this place.

“McBride is ok”

the 5-10 minute train ride was great because the driver narrated the points of interest - but after that, you get dropped off to walk yourself around and look at some trees and plants - not grand by any means. We did this early in our trip and found that if you were to hike the Napali Coast trail to the beach you see better tropical plants (and it's free).

“Beautiful journey”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013 via mobile

One of the best places to visit for a little history of the island. We did the self guided tour which took an hour on foot and a half hour on the bus with our driver, Sam giving us some information on the island. The gardens were beautiful. A perfect journey for our honeymoon and Sam was very informative and friendly. We highly recommend this!

“Another jem in the Pacific”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

This tour is one, like a helicopter, that can be done again and again...always finding another sight and tour guide to explain and display the garden to the group differently. It is not cheap, but it is an excellent value for your time and energy. They also have a good gift shop; shopping on Kauai for unique items is not so easy. The museums and special gift shops, such as NTBG and NaAina Kai can be rewarding for shoppers, too.

“well kept grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2013

While staying in Poipu we checked out this nice little garden. We took the self guided Mcbryde tour and paid $37.50 for 2 adults and 2 kids. It was good for kids because it was a smaller area to cover. The grounds are beautiful. We stayed 1 hour and it was a great place for pictures.
