Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Just took my sister to the Tropical Gardens. we had a wonderful tour guide Sam, a local, who imparted personal knowledge along with botanical and local information on these spectacular grounds! so many unique features, water features and of course we swung by the places where the above films were shot and then enjoyed fruit right off the trees to taste and understand. Loved that part of it was a bus tour, though most was not, so we could see out to the ocean and the far beaches.

We were told by friends that the Allerton garden was beautiful and worth the visit. I am happy we listened to them. It is a beautiful garden, with a great variety of trees and flowers. We were not thrilled about the guided part of the tour, but at the end we were glad Bob took us around and explained not only the history of the garden sights, but also the different plants peculiarities. Well worth the entrance fees.

This is a beautiful place to visit! A third of the flowers and trees can only be found in Hawaii. We took the tour and had an amazing tour guide (Hal) who was absolutely amazing! You get to see where several films and television shows (i.e.Jurassic Park and Gilligan's island) were shot. This is a must see, even if flowers aren't your thing. The stories, history, and tour guide alone are worth the trip!

For Allerton garden in the south, you need a reservation for the guided tour. Beautiful gardens--this is where Jurassic Park was filmed. The garden in the north--Limahuli--is also reommended. It goes up the hillside, with beautiful views of Bali Hai and other mountains and the sea.

Visited NTBG for first time. Wife and I selected the guided tour of Allerton gardens which costs $35/person. The tour involves a short, 15 minute van ride, largely along a ridgeline overlooking the rugged southern coast of Kauai and the Lawai Valley area, and then about a 2 hour walking tour of the Gardens per se. Total time for tour is 2-3 hours which involves walking about 1.5 miles (easy walk) through the gardens. The guide made the trip for us. He was very informative about the history and the flora of the gardens. Many photo ops. Saw the movie site where the dinosaur eggs were discovered in Jurassic Park. Although it was relatively hot, most of walking tour was in the shade. Nevertheless, recommend bringing water (which you can buy at ticket office before tour starts). Once tour is completed you are dropped at the gift shop back at the main entrance. Interesting gift shop with many authentic items and not tacky tourist stuff. Don't forget to walk around the gardens surrounding the gift shop and ticket area. Definitely a worthwhile activity that we will undoubtedly do again.
