Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Our bus driver/guide was very friendly and helpful. We did the McBride garden, which was walkable in a bit over a hour. There was a great variety of plants, and easy walking paths. They also covered some botanical history of the islands and were very informative regarding introduced vs native species. A great gift shop at the end also. Very close to Poipu beach and across the street from Spouting Horn. Definitely recommended for a low key way to see some of the botanical diversity of this great island.

Loved this visit. I enjoyed trying all the different fruits. Our guide was excellent, and not just because he was a Liverpool FC fan! He was Brazilian but I'm terrible with names and can't remember his. Great photo opportunities too, especially with the tree from Jurassic Park. Just remember to take or buy some insect repellant.

Park at botanical garden visitor center, pay, take a bus to the botanical gardens. Our driver Bob gave us a lot of history and other info along the 15 minute drive. Beautiful grounds, only thing is we wish there had been more information signs etc.

This is one of three National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai. It has a wonderful guided tour. This is the Jurassic Park movie garden, along with Pirates of the Caribbean IV and a variety of other movies. Very carefully laid out as "rooms" each area has something unique and surprising and our guide was very knowledgeable. It is also an area where the sea turtles will come to lay eggs since it is remote and there are no lights at night. You do need to be able to walk some distance and make sure you take plenty of water.
