Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

If you enjoy beautiful estate settings or want to learn the history of Allerton Gardens don't miss this 3 hour guided garden tour. Our guide John surely loves his job as you can tell from his excitement of sharing facts, history and the flora. A tram ride with information shared along the way, from the reception center to the main gardens are followed by an easy stroll thru the grounds (with bathroom breaks included). this tour leaves one wanting more. We will try the sunset tour next! Well worth your visit.

We took the guided tour as a spur of the moment thing(only 45 minutes prior). We were hesitant to take a guided tour but worked out. They are having a $35 special so it was really worth it and the tour went over an hour!(3 hrs total) so much to see and learn. Plants are not marked with infor or history so guide really added alot of info and personal stories. Mostly shaded but very humid. A few bugs but not bad. I would highly recommend a guided tour and I am one who would rather go at my pace which is quick!! Be sure to go down road beyond Sheration to Planatation where there are orchid gardens-free and breathe taking. Only a small amount of time required and shop center acorss street is good too.

So interesting to learn of the research and endangered plants being brought to life through stem cells and incubators. The engineering behind the garden designs and water features by Atherton are amazing. A very special, spiritual place. Our guide, Juan, was so generous in spirit. A visit we will long remember.

In truth, I have never paid to get in. The visitor's center, located in Poipu, and parking lot areas offer more than adequate opportunity for strolling amongst the flowers. But, possibly even more enjoyable is the lush landscaping at the multimillion dollar ocean front homes, just past the traffic circle.
