Went for Christmas diner with immediate family and friends- 8 of us in total. As it was Christmas, we wanted something a little more special than the average family restaurant. The atmosphere was wonderful- the children loved watching the fish and the waterfall from their seats. This kept them occupied while the grown-ups enjoyed good conversation over delicious appetizers. The waterfall was great for the kids, but did make it a tad bit hard to hear at our large table. Not a big enough issue to be a concern, however. Our server was friendly, professional and accommodating. He even tried to get the bartender to make our group of Canadians cesars for cocktails! The food was very good, but to be honest I preferred the ahi I had at Duke's. Everyone had an excellent time and we never felt rushed, even though it was a very busy time for the restaurant. I would recommend Tidepools to anyone staying in the Poipu area who wants to go out for a special meal, especially if you are small group/ couple.

Coming from the San Francisco area, we are spoiled with exceptional restaurants. We typically try to lower our standards when traveling in Hawaii or Mexico, as by comparison everyplace we eat seems a notch or two below, and the prices usually comparatively high. We were pleasantly surprised by Tidepools, and after have read rave reviews of Roy's and been fairly disappointed, weren't expecting that much. But this was a high quality, memorable meal.

The standout dish was the crabcakes; really one of the best we've ever had (though I would have liked a bit more sauce). I had filet which was very nicely done, and medium rare met normal mainland standards, which was unusual. My wife had a nice white fish dish, which was good as well. Little details were in place, like that the bread was warm. Only small complaint would be that the bacon on the prawn appetizer was fatty and undercooked, and not in my view up to the standards of the rest of the food. The prawns at first arrived room temp (supposed to be hot), but we mentioned this and poof, we had a new one.

Overall, a great experience. Dinner for 2 with one drink each, 2 appetizers and 2 entres, but no dessert, was about $160.

Excellent ambiance and service. Food was mostly very good except for the vegetarian entree which was a bit too salty with soy sauce. Salads were fresh but pretty ordinary. But the trio of poke - octopus, ahi and lobster was outstanding! Good mahi mahi entree. Also the ahi. Lava cake was a great finish to the meal. Waiter Emerson is a gem.

There's really nothing negative to say about the meal we had here. The service was good, the location of the restaurant is beautiful (it's over water with koi swimming around you, right next to shipwreck beach), and the food was close to outstanding.

Possibly the only thing that could be improved is the atmosphere, but that's still not bad. A great restaurant all in all (although be prepared to pay for it!).
