I've come to expect great food and attentive service from Roy's restaurants - based on many meals at several Roy's locations. This meal, however, was dreadful. Our server all but ignored us, regularly walking by our table without making eye contact and not checking in with us as we sat without silverware and waiting 15-20 minutes in between courses. If she did stop by, she silently dispensed plates (but no silverware) and quickly left. We had to ask other wait staff multiple times for assistance (one particularly concerning example was when our server never returned with her promised answer regarding if the fixed price menu items had ingredients that a member of our party was allergic to). Here is a classic example of the weird, poor service: the one time our server checked in with us, she came to our table, asked if anyone would like coffee, looked straight at only one member of our party (who then said "yes") & then promptly turned and walked away. I sat, with my my mouth open, ready to also request a coffee...but she was gone. The coffee never arrived, anyway.

The food, a fairly expensive (average $70) holiday fixed price menu, was pretty flavorless. My filet mignon was charred and dry on the outside. The appetizers were tiny and seemed "mass produced."

Some staff walked around to ask "the food is good?" - but asked as they walked by - contributing to a sense of not being valued as a customer. Roy's, if you really want to know how our meal is, stop and ask and give us a chance to respond. Better yet, actually provide good food and service in the first place.

Our meal took over two hours...which was odd given the frenzy of wait staff running around the restaurant with the same appetizers & desserts for everyone. You would think we wouldn't be left waiting so long in between courses...but we were. It became laughable after a while, particularly when we looked around the restaurant and saw other similarly frustrated guests, tapping their fingers on the table and looking at their watches.

Never again, Roy's Kolua.

I just love Roys. This location is great. The atmosphere is perfect, and the service is what you'd expect at a fine dining restaurant. The food is great. The salmon and duck were awesome. I always go to Roy's when I have the chance. It can be more expensive, so be prepared for a great, higher priced dinner.

Food: it was disappointing to arrive for our Christmas Eve dinner and realise that the menu was extremely limited over a few days over Christmas. There were only 3 fish entrees, 3 meat entrees, and 2 vegetarian choices. Much reduced from the normal menu. (If we had wanted to pay $60-$70 a head for a 4 course dinner, then we would have had more options to select from). We ended up ordering a number of starters - where there was more choice. The food was delicious - we recommend the miso butterfish, seafood dumplings, beetroot salad. And, of course the famous chocolate soufflé was amazing as always. I would have liked to have given a "4" overall rating, but.......

Service: pretty poor. The waiter was not very friendly, bordering on flippant. He was not welcoming and we felt he would rather be serving someone else or not be working at all. This is completely different from any our previous visits over many years. One dish was forgotten and we had to remind the waiter - no apology was offered. My niece had the kids meal which came with ice cream sundae, waiter informed us that the sundaes were no longer garnished with whipped cream and cherry as the pastry chef had decided that it took too much time.

We made dinner reservations weeks in advance, anticipating another extraordinary dinner at Roy's. Although things looked the same as they had at our last visit, the magic was gone and we had an extremely expensive, yet disappointing Christmas dinner. Our server was nice, and the water boy was very attentive, yet the feeling that you were going to have the 'dinner of your life' was missing. I can't put my finger on it --the food was a 4-- but the experience was a 2 1-2. It seemed like they were just going through the motions and trying to turn the tables.

This was the best meal we had while in Poipu. The food was excellent. We had the meatloaf, the short ribs and the butterfish. All were delicious and well presented. The chocolate dessert was absolutely wonderful - don't miss it! We also enjoyed the edamame instead of bread when we arrived. We will definitely return to Roys!
