We came back to stay at the Waiohai after nine years had passed. I used Marriott Rewards points and felt like I was a great value for what we received. I was able to guarantee ocean view with upgrade points and it was perfect. We had the ground floor, which I normally am not fond of, but it really works well here. We were able to walk out on to the lawn and up the ocean quite easily.

The villas are just as beautiful as I remember, fully appointed with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We celebrated our 25th anniversary on this trip and invited friends over to join us and the villa was perfectly comfortable for entertaining. The two bedrooms are more than we need as a couple, though there isn't a lock-off option like there is at other Marriott vacation clubs.

Another quality Marriott Vacation Club resort! Beautiful, well maintained grounds, and spacious comfortable units. Plenty of high quality stainless steel gas grills in two areas adjacent to the pools. These grills were absolutely spotless! Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful concierge on site. Some minor improvements I'd like to see: the furniture in the units was not as nice or new as other Marriott Vacation Clubs where we've stayed in the past. Perhaps it's near the end of the 5 year life cycle for Marriott to replace the furniture at this resort. The same thing goes for the beds - the master bedroom mattress seemed to sag just a bit, it wasn't up to the standard of other Marriott resorts where we've stayed. A nice fitness center although it lacks a steam room or sauna. Also, there was no wifi signal available in the fitness center, yet there was a signal a few steps away in the same building. Overall, we loved the Waiohai and hope to return someday!

Overall this resort is excellent, specially for families. BUT when I was making our reservation it offered for a premium prize Ocean View suites. I paid a premium for this, only to discover that the suite I had faced a parking lot and woods. The local management said sorry, you can see the ocean. I learned late in the process that owners, etc have much higher priority than guest who pay to stay, even with my Marriott Gold Card. The labeling of rooms is a scam. As a result we will not return to stay at the Marriott Beach Club even though the rooms were outstanding, and the total resort experience was great. The place is very close to some superb restaurants, even though its in-house dining is limited, so this is not an issue.

Room Tip: When making reservation you should try to make clear what kind of room you are looking for. Don'...

We are still thinking of our Kauai vacation three months after the trip. The Marriott Waiohai was a great resort. The villas were on par with others we have stayed in. There are very few true ocean view villas but ours was garden facing and just as beautiful!! Beware there are some that face the rear parking lot and I did feel sorry for those folks.
The resort is directly on Poipu Beach and just a short walk from the villas. The beach was amazing....clean, tons of chairs overlooking beach area, never felt crowded. Snorkeling there was great. Easy for the kids to do and we felt very safe. Seals and turtles visited the beach daily.
The pools were very clean and also uncrowded. They were heated and made it so much more comfortable for night swimming.
Location is good. We walked to shops and restaurants across the street. Kalapaki Joes down the street became our favorite local place. Lobster tacos were amazing and breakfast pancakes were huge and reasonably priced.
We did lei making at the kids activity club. We were the only ones there. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The marketplace on site served Starbucks and local coffee and some small meals etc.
We rented a jeep to tour the island but also really enjoyed our days relaxing at Poipu Beach! Would go back again and stay here in a heartbeat!

After many years of admiring this place from Poipu Beach, we finally decided to do an exchange into this property. If you listen to the timeshare sales people, they will tell you that it is next to impossible to exchange in via Intervals International, and when you tell them that you did, they seem shocked. They are full of it. We were able to score two weeks at this place (in a 2-bedroom) but threw one back when we decided that it was more important to be at home for the Super Bowl.

Overall this resort is really nice. You really can't beat the location. In fact, it is the location that makes this place a four star, not the property itself. First of all, it is on the older side. Clearly showing its age, this place could use a facelift. The furniture is starting to look dated and like the Marriott Aruba Surf Club, the in-room safe is locked with a key. Not very convenient to have to carry a key with you everywhere. What happens if you lose the key? Also, the fan in the bathroom is really, really loud. Plus it is attached to the big light. If you want to see while you are putting on your makeup, you need the big light which is attached to the really loud fan. On the positive side, they give you plenty of beach towels (8 in a 2 bedroom).

Outside, the resort is beautiful. There is an adults only pool located just outside Building 7 & 8. Very peaceful and there are grills near by so you can grill up some burgers for lunch and dine by the pool. The main pool is also very nice and they have plenty of beach chairs, some of which are fronting the beach. Not sure if you can drag the chairs down to the beach. I didn't see anyone doing this, but I'm not sure if this is for lack of trying or if they have a strict no chairs off property rule. The pools are all heated, which makes them very pleasant for a swim.

Staff is very friendly and more than happy to help if you have a question or problem. The parking is free, plentiful and located underground. You will need your room key to get in, so remember to keep it handy when driving. The Poipu Shopping Village is a short walk and there is a Starbucks there for breakfast.

A bit further down the road is the new Shops at Kukui'Ula. The last time we were in Kauai was 2009 and things are much different now. This shopping village is one of them. Lots of quaint shops and good restaurants. Plus a gourmet natural foods market (think Whole Foods but small) called The Living Market. They have really good panini and very tasty fresh cookies. Plus they have a wide assortment of meats and fish for grilling, cheeses, produce and a pretty good wine selection. Every Wednesday the shopping center hosts a gourmet farmers market. Lots of local vendors with fruit, BBQ, spices and other assorted goodies. I highly recommend checking it out.

The market at the resort sucks. Seriously, it's bad. No real selection of anything worth buying. If you need sundries or over the counter meds (for a cold or flu), you're out of luck. You'll need to go down to the Poipu Shopping Village. Ordered a latte one morning (it was raining and didn't want to walk to Starbucks) and it was given to me cold. I saw the guy steam the milk but clearly he didn't steam it enough. I'm sure I could have asked him to re-do it, but I am a bit nervous when it comes to complaining about my food. Doesn't matter where it is, I prefer to keep complaints to myself. I just took it and ended up pouring it over ice when I got back to my unit.

Overall, this is a great resort. If you are thinking about staying here or exchanging into here, I say go for it. You really can't beat the location and that is really what matters most when you are in Hawaii. That said, if you stay here as part of a hotel package and/or are paying by the night to stay, do not expect daily housekeeping service and do not expect any flexibility on check in/out time. This is a timeshare property and everyone is treated to the same rules regardless of how you ended up here. I am always surprised by reviews from guests who pay by the night to stay at a timeshare property and are upset that they don't get daily housekeeping, and are asked to check out by 10 a.m. Timeshare property means timeshare rules.

Room Tip: Unless you own at this property, don't expect an ocean view.

We had a perfect three week stay, even with a little wind and rain. We have been here many years and have grown to expect and love the perfection. The rooms/suites are beautiful with a very nice full kitchen and lanai/balcony large enough to eat at and enjoy the sunset.
Aside from the view, the best part about the Waiohai is the staff. They do an excellent job - truly friendly and helpful. The property is well taken care of (and I hear they are planning on updating room furniture this fall). The market place and Hula Bar offer a good selection of food, but there is not a full service restaurant on site. Although, there are many restaurants in walking distance.
Talking about walking there are several good hikes starting at the Waiohai. We would walk past Poipu Beach, then along a path through condos, to the Hyatt. From the far end of the Hyatt you can walk past shipwreck beach with beautiful views of the ocean and see some whales. If you hike far enough you get to the Poipu Bay golf course and can walk along the 14, 15, and 16 holes.
Talking about golf Poipu Bay is a beautiful place to play, our favorite. For several years they had the Grand Slam tournament there. It's $180 with Marriott discount. The other extreme is Kukuiolono in Kalaheo, about 8-10 miles from Waiohai. It's a nine hole public course, with nice views of the ocean for $9.00. Yes, $9.00! The property was willed to the town with the stipulation that they would maintain the golf course and never charge more than $9.00. It's fun.
Back at the Waiohia, you have to visit the quiet pool, if you are a quiet adult. Nice place to relax. Both a pool and a hot tub.
One last comment - Vic, Betty, Linda, etc. ALL great people that want to make sure you are happy. We love all the staff that make our stay wonderful.

I've stayed here twice now and I really love this place. The beach is beautiful and the swimming is good. It's nice for families as well as a
romantic getaway. The sunsets are fantastic. The rooms are getting a little dated but they are going to renovate this year. But they are very nice anyway. Typical Marriott vacation club rooms. Really nice pools. I like the way this place is laid out with smaller buildings circling the beautiful gardens. This is way better than one huge hotel (to me) sticking out like a sore thumb on this pretty island. The only thing that is a bit of a bummer is the lack of great dining experiences. But over the years its getting better on Kauai. But many times I've paid a lot for a mediorce meal. But that is nothing to do with the hotel. they do have many BBQs so you can make some great meals. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying their stay here (as long as the weather is good!)
