Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this outstanding garden, known for its diverse collection of tropical plants. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

I arrived to late for the tours of the gorgeous grounds but took advantage of the great gift shop! Many beautiful items made by local artists.

Get on the little trolley and travel along the road past Spouting Horn until you reach a gate at the end of the road. It opens to the glorious vista of a cove with a perfect beach - sorry but you can't. But travel farther and enter an enchanted forest of flowering plants. You will want to bring water, a good hat and maybe some mosquito repellent. Thank you Mr McBryde.

**good points:
- nice bus ride with beautiful views
- the grounds are well kept
**so-so points
- had to wait 30 min for the shuttle to the actual gardens
- not as much information about plants provided, not as interesting
- wandered around, felt like there was no direction even if it was self guided
- finished walking around after only 1 hour
- no student discount, not sure it was worth the $15

probably better to do the guided tour and see more!

It's only $15 to get in, but save your time and visit the Limahuli Garden on the North Shore. I understand the Allerton Garden—part of the same piece of land as the McBryde—is a better visit, but it cost twice as much and your stuck with a guide for 2 hrs.

We go to McBryde's every year since my grandson turned one--he loves to ride the little bus every summer. We spend hours wandering, picnicking, looking at the lovely plants, odd seeds, and trees. We always discover something new and beautiful. Take a camera and some water/snack/bug spray. It is a great little hiking area and very restful--yet a great adventure!
