Even though the waves weren't great, out instructor made the lessons enjoyable. I've tried surfing a couple of times and didn't really enjoy it but after my lesson I can't wait to try it again! Everybody in our group got up on their board and had a great time.

My family of four had a great 2-hour stand-up paddle boarding private lesson with Doug and Adam. We contacted Doug the day before to ask about lessons; he was available and arranged to meet us the next day at a time of mutual convenience. We went to the Wailua river, which was an excellent place to learn SUP because it was flat and the wind was low. Doug and Adam began with a good demonstration of basic technique on land and then we went out on the water. My family was able to get up quickly and spent the rest of the lesson paddling on the river with helpful feedback from them. It was a great introduction to the sport for us and we plan to do more of it at home. We would definitely go back to Doug for any future lessons.

It was probably my mistake to sign up for "group" lessons through NCL cruises as opposed to semi private lessons. It really doesn't work to have one instructor give rote, quick instruction to 12 people ranging in age from 12 to 60 and then send us into the surf. The area we were taken too was way overcrowded and limited the 2 staff people to merely positioning themselves strategically in the surf to have the surfers paddle towards them and they would hold the boards, wait for an appropriate wave, instruct the surfer to "paddle" and then push the board off into the wave. Helpful, but it doesn't get you up. Also given the amount we paid, the time spent both in and out of the water was insufficient. In fairness, my two sons did great and enjoyed it.
If you have never surfed, I would seriously look outside the cruise ship excursions for surf schools on each island that offer private or semi private lessons including a GUARANTY that you will stand and surf a wave!! Ultimately it's a better value for a better result.

I took a bunch of private lessons with Corbin- he was super chill and friendly, and helped me a ton to feel comfortable on a new break as a beginner surfer. I not only felt super safe and way more confident after working with him, but I also really felt like he was happy to help me out and see me improve. My goal to be confident in the line up was def achieved!
I would strongly recommend Corbin if you want a fun and instructive time surfing!
