This is was the second time that we stayed at the Kiahuna Plantation. This time we were in unit #77 a one bedroom, ocean view condo. We had a wonderful time and we cannot wait to return.

The gardens within the resort are beautiful. And I found the services at the resort to be good. We also went to the Plantation restaurant and had a nice time there.

The first time we went we were on our honeymoon, 5 years later we returned with our 16 month old daughter. The experience both times was great.

I recommend checking out the "baby beach" if you have little kids. It was the best day of the trip and we wish we went there sooner.

My husband and I stayed here in February of 2008, and based on that experience, we were so excited to come back! We were very disappointed with our room this time around. We had a ground-floor "ocean view" room 1 bed/ 1 bath (Unit 32) that I believe is misclassified- basically, I had to be standing on my tiptoes to see any water. The ocean is fairly far away and there is a row of hedges separating the beach from the lawn, and this blocks your view when you're sitting down at the dining room table or sitting on the patio chairs on the lanai. We felt absolutely sick that we paid so much money to enjoy the ocean, when in fact we usually weren't able to see it. This is also the only ground floor unit in the building with a railing around the lanai, which also blocks your view of anything.

In addition, the bedroom is RIGHT NEXT TO the main path and footbridge that leads to the beach. There are only wood shutters and screens - no glass windows to close to block out the noise. Where we stayed last year (the next row of buildings back, away from the path), we didn't have a noise problem so the lack of glass windows wasn't a big deal. There were a lot of kids playing on the lawn and walking back and forth to the beach early in the morning, and this drove my husband and I crazy when we were trying to sleep.

We also found out how thin the floors are. We were in a ground level unit and it's really loud when the people in the upper unit are walking around. Based on all these issues, we asked Outrigger to move us (twice). They weren't able to.

This was all unfortunate, because the interior of the unit was very nice. The owners have kept the furniture and fixtures up-to-date and in great shape. There are nice touches like a retractable clothes line in the shower and plenty of books to read.

So, a few rules for this place:

1. Stay in a top floor unit, or in a unit that includes both first and second floors
2. Do not stay in a unit located next to the path to the beach (unless you like to get up early)
3. Don't count on a view of the ocean unless you're in an upper level unit or you are in a unit that's right next to the shore.

We loved it the first time around, and will make sure we get what we want next time! Send me a message if you want a map of the property with all of the unit numbers. I have it in .pdf.

My wife and I just returned from Kauai where we stayed at Kiahuna Plantation. We booked an oceanfront room, but when I was told 2 days before that it was almost oceanfront and complained, they immediately and without pushing reduced the roomrate to an oceanview. We had a wonderful room, building 3, right next to the ocean and with an unobstructed view of the grounds, the ocean and sunsets.

The room was a 1 bedroom, but well designed and nicely appointed. We owned a condo in Kona for years, so we notice the little things, and this was a first rate unit. The grounds are incredible, whether walking to dinner at the Plantation Gardens (setting wonderful, food so so), or watching families play catch on the huge lawn, they do an excellent job of maintaining the grounds. We were without our 3 teenage children, but never felt that there were too many families (there were many), since there is so much space. The beach was ideal, and we had 6 of 7 sunsets that were magical.

We travel a fair amount, we rely on TripAdvisor for feedback on places to stay, and I can highly recommed this place.

For our 25th anniversary my husband and I booked 5 nights on kauai, 5 on the Big Island and 5 on Maui. In Kauai we stayed at the Kiahuna Plantation at Poipu. We found accommodations through VRBO and stayed in #86. A co-worked had stayed at Kiahuna Plantation but not in the same unit, so I had some idea of what to expect. The sweeping lawns down to a lovely sand beach were just what we wanted. Two nights we walked across the street to the Poipu shopping plaza; once to see the hula dancers and once to eat at Keiko's Paradise. It was great to have so much within walking distance: the beach, a good restaurant and even some entertainment. Unit #86 was recently remodeled and despite not having air conditioning was very comfortable at night with the overhead fans.

We booked unit 144 (I think it was in building 22)directly from the owner. It has been remodeled and it a very private end ground floor unit. Nicely equiped and I would have to say that the best part was that it had a washer and dryer right in the unit-not all of them do. We only brought carry on bags because of this fact and I would highly recommend it especially for canadians who have to go through customs.
The grounds are very well kept and it does not matter if you don't have an ocean view, the gardens are beautiful and the ocean is a short(really short) walk across the grass. We really liked this feature as most resorts don't have a swimmable or snorkeling beach right on their grounds, Kiahuna does, it actually shares the beachfront with the Sheraton. I would not recommend this resort for families with teens but for couples and those with little ones it is great. The pool is way up across the road but not a problem for us as the ocean was the big attraction - I find the thought of going to Hawaii and then swimming in a pool kind of weird. Do your homework though and pick a unit through an owner since the decor varies a lot as does the price. You can get a way better deal through the owner as opposed to the resort itself. Poipu is a great base for exploring all parts of Kauai, it is central and good for day trips. I have read some reviews saying people find this resort noisy, all in all it is fine, you can hear people coughing and talking but it is a quiet place, you don't go there to party! Some people have a lower tolerance for noise however. We did notice the smoke smell from the fellow on the lanai upstairs every morning but hey, sometimes ya gotta roll with it.

We shopped at Costco in Lihue for booze but found the food packages too big for two of us for only 10 days. The Big Save up the road, while still a bit pricey had a good selection and was still way cheaper than eating out. I would go back to this unit in a minute although it would be nice if there were a few things in the fridge and cupboards like a canister of sugar and some soy sauce and some spices. I bought all the condiments and spices you need for burgers, sandwiches, dinners etc and left them all there. I imagine others do the same so where does all the stuff go? The housekeeping staff must help themselves to it when they clean up. The kitchen was nicely equipped and there was lots of paperbacks to choose from too - and a great book on identifying the fish we saw. We also bought grass mats and left them there as well, free towels for the beach are available daily.

We stayed here for four nights in January 2009 in a "Garden View One Bedroom Paradise Suite" (Apt 50). We chose it because research suggested the south side of the island as being the best place to stay in winter and this seemed one off the best value for money places to stay in the area.

First impressions were very favourable - loved the look and feel of the big white plantations style buildings amongst the lush green lawns. Even being in a garden view room the beach was a very short walk away and a great one at that.

The apartment that we were in was well presented and had plenty of space. The bed was comfortable, the place was kept clean, the kitchen had most things we needed for self catering (though a kettle would be nice), as well as having plenty of space to relax in.

The staff seemed very friendly and helpful but we didn't really utilise their services between checking in and out. We were fairly active during our time there and didn't spend a lot of time around the resort but from what we could tell it seemed to cater well in in providing for every day needs.

The Poipu area in general was very well presented. It's very resortish and the prices in shops and restaurants reflect this. Koala a few miles away was a bit cheaper for groceries etc. Though if returning to Kauai I would be more keen to try further afield such as Hanalei or somewhere along the north coast at a different time of year.

The review by member Pablo... is mostly on track, but we saw this as possibly the best mid-range / low-touch resort we have been to. We stayed on the second story of the newer 2 story units facing the beach. Thus we could not really hear anyone else, just the surf, unlike the other noise issues mentioned by others. We booked direct with an owner and loved it. Paying a little more per night was really worth it here.

The grounds are beautiful, the beach is very nice if a bit strong at times, and the amenities are nice. The beach had recently been hit by a strong storm, which took out the boardwalk / deck which is between the beach and front units out. The beach activities desk has 'free' beach towels, nice beach chairs, and lots of plastic toys (buckets, shovels, scrapers, etc.) for the little kids. Be careful about booking through the activities desk as they were solely there to shove you into something (anything) - including at one point telling us the "best" was one tour, and then when we balked at the price, telling us the "best" was now one they had previously downplayed. The beach has ok snorkeling, not much live coral, but probably 30 different types of fish over two snorkel outings. Kids had lots of fun in the strong to medium surf coming in, and the surfers and paddleboarders were out in force. There are not any nice tidepools, although it would look like it until you get out on the rocks. We had a monk seal on the beach one day.

The pool is great for a condo resort setup, with an above average slide (strong water force), a pebble area about a foot deep for tiny ones, a hot hot tub, and a lot of room so you are not on top of others. You have to check in with the Pro Shop for towels, and the changing room is adequate but small. They close the pool immediately (lock down) at 6PM, so get it in early. The restaurant / bar near the pool (Casablanca) is ok and I'll review it separately - the key thing to know is that they won't honor happy hour prices if you take your drinks out to the pool - $8 for a MaiTai or margarita. We did not have an issue with crossing the highway, as drivers stop for you to cross (it's a Hawaii law), and the walk is very pretty over maybe 3 Chicago city-blocks - by pretty I mean flowers, geckos, roosters and hens, butterflys, tennis courts, and lots of lava architecture.

At sunset the entire lawn filled up with everyone sitting out to watch - a very communal atmosphere.

In terms of the Castle Resorts folks, we thought they were very up front about all of the charges and helpful. Faxes received at $.50 a page plus tax. We used the $18 towel change / garbage change once over 7 days, which we thought was great given the number of showers we took. Tip - pick up a handful of postcards in the Castle office to send out. They pushed a couple of restaurants that weren't so great, so watch out for that.

The location is fabulous. Literally 2 minutes drive or 8 minute walk to Poipu Beach or Brennecke's restaurant. Joe's On the Green and a general store also within 2 minutes or 5 minute walk. You are on the South side with the best warm weather of Kauai at all times. Close to ATV adventures, the Kauai coffee plantation, and Lihue is only 25 minutes away.

And the whole place was really low-touch or go at your own pace. Not fru-fru, nor a push on any use of their services, pleasant staff everywhere, and easy checkout. They had staff available to help at all times, and were really working to keep the grounds clean (even after a wind storm).

Enjoy!
