“Nice vacation but not very clean accomodations”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

Stayed in Kahala room 823 from Nov. 30/13 to Dec. 14/13. Booked with Westjet Vacations. I phoned in advance to request a refurbished room, which we got. I requested a crib, which we didn't get. We arrived late in the evening and reception was closed, but there was a secure lock box where our keys were kept. Smooth check in. We booked a 1 bedroom gardenview apartment, location was great.

The apartment was renovated but NOT clean. The carpet in the bedroom and closet was GROSS. Stains all over and very very dirty. I didn't feel good about our nearly one year old crawl on it. I also noticed right away that there appeared to be mouse poop on the floor in the closet. We cleaned it up. After a couple of days we realized it wasn't mouse poop but lizard poop. There were lizards living in the closet. There was poop on the walls and they were getting in because on all of the window screens there appeared to be a quarter to half inch gap all the way around- plenty of room for lizard access. We had two cockroaches in the room at different times. It's a tropical place, what more is there to say?

Housecleaning comes daily to change towels and bedding is changed every 4th day. Floors were never swept, bathroom sinks not cleaned etc. Not sure what's going on there. Bring laundry deterg or buy it there because in two weeks we only received one box of single use Tide.

Location is great, the grounds are kept really well. Kahala has a small pool which was quiet and pleasant. We thought we would have access to all the pools around the complex but you only have access to the community pool and the pool belonging to your unit.

Staff at reception was helpful friendly, but I have to say the $15 nightly extra "amenity" charge is a joke. It's something that will make me think twice about staying there again. I don't mind paying the overall fee, but I'm someone who doesn't like to be nickel and dimed.

We had a lovely visit to Kauai and we'd stay in Poipu again, I'm just not sure I'd book with Aston at Poipu Kai. It seemed like the cleaners didn't have enough time to properly clean each room, and a lot of cleaning was overlooked.

We spent 8 days at Aston at Poipu Kai. After reading previous we requested a refurbished unit.We opened our door with a bit of trepidation after reading so many negative reviews. We needn't have worried, ours was in a four plex. It was a spacious two story , two bedroom 2 bath , three lanai ( with lots of patio furniture) garden view unit.Great floor plan with privacy , good for two couples or family with each bathroom & bedroom on separate floors. It had been freshly painted, new carpet, flat screen tvs, nicely , though not luxuriously, furnished. Kitchen was well appointed, granite counter etc..The washer and dryer a plus.We were completely comfortable.

The grounds are lovely, the beach is viewed from some units, but the garden units have great views too . Poipu Beach is about a five minute stroll through the immaculately cared for green belts and across the street. The pools are scattered around the grounds, and each condo section has access to two I think. Anyway they were never crowded, but we only used one once, the beach was our thing.

The lack of AC wasn't an issue, we just opened everything up and turned on the fans.If you are truly bothered by heat ( low 70s and high humidity at night) this might be an issue and perhaps check else where.

There is a tranquil feeling here, unlike other resorts, there was no frenetic come join the party , loud music pounding etc. In fact they ask you to observe quiet hours, and encourage you to make certain children and teenagers are aware of the request, even to not run laundry and dishwasher after ten and before 8 am. The lack of ac noise adds to the quiet. This is a residential compound, with many year round residents .Common courtesy is so often left behind when people are on vacation and party noise and children left to their own devices can be an issue. We appreciated the attention to this so everyone was able to enjoy the setting. .

Previous reviewers have mentioned no wifi, toiletries, laundry and dish soap, or beach towels. All now are provided. Checking in for boarding passes is free at the office.

I agree on the $15 a day fee, the management should just add it to the price of the room, seems sort of a tacky marketing ploy since it makes the per day rate seem less until you read the fine print.

We had everything we needed there to make our stay enjoyable, hope to return next year. Aloha

Room Tip: Ask for an updated condo, and garden view units are wonderful and cheaper. The beach is all of a f...

This was a very special Multi-family trip and our rooms were lovely with great views! The staff was very accommodating, especially Lori M. If I had one thing to say is it would have been nice if a hot tub was a little closer. Pretty dark walk from the Makanui bldgs... But I will definitely recommend this property for any visiting Kauai! Thanks for the memories!

We just returned from a trip and we stayed 7 nights. The location is great, close to the beach and in the middle of the island. Some of the best weather to be found on the island. We had a lovely large until, but it was right next to the road and due to the windows needing to be open due to lack of air conditioning (which is fine, the temperature is nice with the windows open) the road noise ruined any relaxing beach side dreams and every morning quite early was the sound of yard maintenance right outside our window would wake us up. The bed was dreadfully uncomfortable. Despite a 15 dollar a night charge there was no housekeeping, all they did was daily change towels and I think the sheets were changed once during our stay. They would not make the bed or do any cleaning at all (like vacuum, clean the bathrooms etc) I expect that I should clean up things like the kitchen when used etc and also despite the 15 dollar a night charge the internet kept cutting out, the unfortunate reality is that I had to do some remote work in the evenings and it was beyond frustrating that the connection continued to drop every few minutes every night. I was able to get onto other signals on the property, but they also dropped frequently, I tried connecting by cable to the modem, but still no luck. I told the woman at check out, but no adjustment on the fee. Still a reasonable deal for the unit in a good location, but I wish they would just charge you the appropriate price for the nightly stay rather than dinging you with 110 dollars at check out. I still shake my head at any MANDATORY "resort fees" they should be a part of what is charged for the room or for specific services used.

Room Tip: By the sounds of it, it is worth reading many of these reviews and request ones that people rave abo...

Having read about some issues people had with rooms we emailed ahead requesting a recently refurbished property. We were given the lovely 2 bed 2 bathroom room 322. The condos are clean, very spacious, modern and very comfortable. All the appliances were new, and the views are great. The swimming pool was just a few yards from us, but go to Poipu beach, it's stunning. The apartment is on two levels giving you lots of privacy if travelling with a family, and the kitchen is so well kitted out you can cook almost anything you want. We went without a car, which is doable, but would probably recommend you do hire one as local taxis, although efficient, are not cheap. Make sure you see Dano at the Wine Shop in Koloa for excellent recommendations, and enjoy the fans which keep you naturally cool, unlike the sore throats generated by air conditioning. Need to mention reception team who are also excellent!!!

We stayed at Aston Poipu Kai last august it’s the place you want to be on your Kauai vacation.
In my opinion Poipu is the best location to stay in Kauai, It definitely rains less than in the northern part of the island and it’s convenient for all points of interest on the island.
Aston Poipu Kai is part of a very big resort area with gardens perfectly kept, the entire resort area is beautiful.
Some of the units are ocean front and even though I stayed in a garden view unit, those by the ocean from the outside they are quite impressive .
We had a very nice garden view unit, located in Manualoa area, the unit has a full kitchen with everything that you need if you want to have dinner & breakfast at home, washer&dryer etc, the overall condition of the unit are in quite good, in a few words very pleasant to stay and pleasant to see
This place is so quiet, so relaxing, gardens with flower and plants all over, and it’s so beautiful to wake up in the morning with fresh and clean air all around you, it makes your day, you will love to be there.
You can walk to the beach thru the resort gardens, very short and pleasant walk, or you can reach Poipu Beach by car in less than five minutes.
Another important factor is the staff & management : you can count on them, last august I had the opportunity to meet for a few minutes the resort GM : Ms Malana de Silva to exchange a few words and I could tell why this resort now is doing so well, to be honest I was at the Aston Poipu Kai for the first time a few years ago I was not so satisfied, but since Ms de Silva is running the place everything is working perfectly.
This was not my first stay at Aston Poipu Kai and hopefully won’t be the last, yes I definitely recommend to stay there
Just a small tip to view a great sunset nearby, when you exit the resort going to Lihue, just go straight don’t turn right or left on Poipu Road, drive straight for little more than a mile till you’ll see on the left a fruit hut, stay there on the rights side where all the rainbow showers trees are and wait for sunset !! you don’t’ see the ocean but you have the mountains on the back..the colors are so beautiful, you’ll love it.
