Shipwreck Beach is a nice location directly in front of the Hyatt Regency. There is a small public access area on the east side with restrooms and showers. There are tide pools for exploring on the west side and some surfing in the reef break. It would be much better beach if the Hyatt didn't dominate all the views and rent the beach chairs.

It was a rough day on the water when we were here so we didn't go in. I was told this was the beach to go to, so we did. I have to say, it wasn't my favorite. It was nice, but nothing terribly special.

Our 4 year old nephew loved the steep sand bank, but the waves were a little too rough for him. We had a great time boogie boarding and while a couple of us were waiting for some good waves, a big turtle surfaced right beside us for air before diving down under the waves again. There were trees for shade and the cliffs on the east end of the beach added to the view and also gave a great vantage point for watching whales. We saw quite a few humpback whales go by, giving us quite a show. Lots of flippers waving and slapping the water and some full breaches too!
We also saw a young man and his father jump off the 35 foot cliff. It looked like a lot of fun if you could build up the nerve to jump!

Nice sandy beach. Small but kind of hidden so its not so crowded. View point at end of the beach was accessible to active folks and photos kids took were spectacular. Lots of teen time "boogie boarding". No lifeguard on duty so parents need to be available if needed. Very good waves for activity.

Its a beach. Its on the ocean. It has sand and waves, but it also has coral and isn't a great beach for swimming, surfing, or snorkeling. There are many better beaches on the island. That said, it is right at the Hyatt with access to restrooms, restaurants, etc. so the location is great, especially if you are a guest of the Hyatt. BTW the Hyatt has built a pseudo beach salt water swimming pool complete with sand beaches to compensate for the shortcomings of Shipwreck Beach and to provide a nice place for children to have the beach experience in a safe environment.
