When it's raining on the rest of the island 7 times out of 10 it won't be raining in Poipu and the sun will poke through. Be warned however that all the east and north shore hotels tell their guests this info and during rainy periods it gets jam packed and parking runs out. Very clear water as there are no rivers nearby. There is a protected area for kids with no current unless the water level is really high. It's a good place to find a monk seal sleeping on the beach. Good facilities and well kept area.

Beautiful and clean beach to enjoy for all ages (we have a 15 month with us for the trip). A "must" beach to visit at Kauai.

Good for families with small kids. We didn't swim because we were there in January. Lots of people were swimming and snorkeling on the nice days.

Poipu Beach Park is a great place to snorkel especially for beginners. It has a wide array of fish in a relatively protected area and is great for families with younger children. A couple of times seals were sleeping on the beach (although protected by local volunteers to allow them to be left alone). Sea turtles were also seen to come through occasionally as well. I would recommend this for anyone visiting Kauai especially in January when the north coast is too choppy for snorkeling. Despite sometimes high surf this area was still a great place to visit. There is a shop across the way to rent snorkeling equipment at a reasonable price and of course, shave ice for a cooling treat as well!

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt which was about a mile walk to the east. We found the little bay to the east side of the park to be great for watching boogie boarders, whales, turtles, outriggers.....and best of all SUNSETS. Very romantic little spot.
