Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

This was a great, easy walking tour. You'll see several sites where different movies were filmed and learn a lot about the horticulture of Hawaii. We didn't have a reservation but arrived early enough to catch a tour leaving 15 minutes later. Take your own bug spray. They have small bottles of all natural spray for sale but it didn't work!

This was a great tour. Once there, we were taken by bus to the interior of the garden where our guide led us through and gave an interesting talk about the gardens and the history of the gardens. The gardens were very tropical and beautiful

What a fantastically beautiful place. This is true paradise. The tour was so interesting. Casual walking with a guide who was very informative, warm and gracious. We loved hearing about Mr. Allerton's life and garden-building. It was truly one of the highlights of our trip. Little pricey but welcome to Hawaii. Well worth the money and you can't say that about a lot of things. Very happy we picked this tour.

We went on the Saturday morning tour of Allerton Garden. It was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, Dave, was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting stories with us about the garden and the Allerton family. Saturday is a good day to go because it is very quiet since the gardeners only work during the week. I don't think I've ever felt more relaxed and calm. It truly is a tranquil paradise that you should not miss!

After the short tram ride down into the Lawa'i valley site of the gardens, with amazing lagoon views, you walk through a series of landscape areas or "rooms" that encompass towering trees, palms, schrubs, vines, waterfalls, ponds, streams and other features, with colorful and intriguing tropical flowers, plants, ferns, vines and trees everywhere the eye can see. Bring a water bottle and be sure to spray your entire body with mosquito repellent! This guided tour ($35) will dazzle any garden lover and the variety of plants is tremendous and well maintained. There are moss-covered statuary and unique water features, like the undulating water in the "Mermaid room" and the cascading waterfall/scalloped fountain modeled after bamboo. We observed an exotic bird along the stream and green geckos climbing down a tree trunk, took pics by the roots of Moreton Bay Fig trees that were featured in the Jurassic Park movie (i.e. Raptor eggs) and the lagoon sight of several movies, two of which featured Harrison Ford. These gardens are truely delightful, and our guide (Matt -interesting but not great with the historical aspects of Allerton) pointed out conservationist aspects of NTBG's goals and how the "seed database" is protected from hurricanes, as well as pointing out toxic or medicinal qualities of certain plants and letting us sample chinese grapefruit and other fruits from the fruittrees. The tour goes by quickly and is well worth the price. Be plentiful in applying mosquito repellent, especially on legs!
