Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We took the tour and we were not disappointed. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain a lot of the history. The grounds are amazing and well kept. We would recommend this.

“Worth it in every way”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We had not done the tour before so decided to take advantage of kama'aina opportunities on a "freebie" Saturday. Although we still had to book places in advance, this is a great gesture to residents.

The full garden is truly magnificent and one can understand why it has been such a popular place for movie makers from Jurassic Park to Pirates of the Caribbean. The creation of the garden has been an inspired one and although the founders are long gone, their legacy lives on. There is also poignant recognition of Queen Emma, who once owned all the land about and one of the original buildings from her estate has been preserved as part of the house complex. It was dismantled, lowered over the cliff in pieces and then re-assembled. Even today, the private access road is quite challenging. Also, the 2011 tsunami had its effects here, washing out the access bridge and stripping the beach of sand. However, the gardens remain, a true master work of the tropical gardener's arts.

The gardens are best seen as a series of garden "rooms" with parts totally wild and others more formal with spring-fed water features, sculptures and endless pathways leading to and through lush and exotic plants, ponds of Lotus and the river-lake. There is a certain primeval aspect as well with the volcanic landscape not entirely clothed in tropical vegetation.

This really is a must see for anybody keen on gardens and especially, tropical garden.

“So beautiful !”

Beautiful plants and trees. Great guide, interesting because of his knowledge as a gardener, but also because he has a perspective on history. Nice sense of humor.

“Tour with Juan”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

This garden is beautiful with interesting history. I have heard great things about this garden so I wanted to see it while on Kauai. We made sure to go on day that was overcast so we would not feel bad about missing out on a good beach day. Plus, being that it was overcast probably helped decease the heat factor while in the beautiful jungle. Insects were biting since there was a rainstorm that weekend but we were prepare. Juan made the tour very interesting! Glad we did it.
