Owner description: NTBG’s Allerton Garden Garden is located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Tours run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore this former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

“Well worth the price”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

My wife and I recently visited the Allerton Gardens near Lawai for the first time and came away very impressed with the site and the tour. Our guide (Frank) is fairly new at leading this tour but still was able to communicate a great deal of the history of the Gardens, their use as a Hollywood set for movies, and the ideas behind their design and construction. The tour is not inexpensive ($45 per person) but this kept the tour size manageable (12 people) and minimized delays in walking. The tour takes about 2.5 hours and involves a modest amount of easy walking. February is not peak season for flowers but this allowed us to consider the ideas behind the design and not just the beauty of the Gardens. We are gardeners but not architects, so the introduction to garden design and what the Allertons were trying to do here was helpful. I have no doubt that the Allertons (father and son) were eccentric as well as rich, but this is often the case with the creation of such sites. We highly recommend the tour for couples and gardeners of all levels but this is probably not a venue for children or teens who could become bored with the discussions. The presence on our tour of a couple who were familiar with the 'other' Allerton Gardens near Champaign, Illinois, was very helpful as they were able to add details about the Allertons that our guide did not know.

Dr. Bob, with his endless trivia and knowledge on just about any subject, made this tour interesting even for the non-gardeners.

“Expansive gardens”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

The day tours cover quite a bit if ground. It is NOT ARDUOUS WALKING, but it is walking so wear comfy shoes or sneakers. Book the evening tour is space is available. You get to go into the house and appetizers are served. The gardens are BEAUTIFUL during the day but you do not get a chance to go into the house. You will not believe how expansive the grounds are and some of the most unique tropical plants on display. The trees from the movie Jurassic Park are really AMAZING. The guides are very knowledgeable and professional. There is also a lovely gift shop on site.

“Set aside a morning or an afternoon!”
Reviewed February 11, 2012

Turns out we didn't have enough time to do this place justice. There is a free beautiful garden at the entrance, but I deeply regret we didn't plan time to go on the $45 guided tour of the Allerton Garden, which I have heard is well worth the price. There's another garden (McBride) which is self-guided and less pricey but we didn't have time for that one. I guess we'll have to return to Kauai!!
