We stayed for a week at the Villas at Poipu Kai and thought that the accommodations were great. We were in B300, which is a great location. It is a four-bedroom villa that overlooks the pool. Everything about the villa was fine. The kitchen is well stocked with everything that you will need for cooking, if you choose to do so. Much better than other condos that we have stayed in. We also used the outdoor grill twice, which was also very convenient. There were eight of us (including two young children) staying in this villa and there was plenty of room. The front lanai is very large and provides expanded space for the living room when the full-length glass doors are open. The back lanai provided a nice ocean view. The two bedroom lanais are virtually useless as they look directly into an adjoining condo - our only complaint about the layout of the villa. Blinds needed to be drawn always because of this; including in the master suite. A 7-8 minute walk down a greenbelt gets you to a very nice beach - boogie boarding, shallow beach for young children, snorkeling, etc. They have beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, etc. that you can use during the stay. Everything that we needed. Across from the beach is Brenneke's Beach Bar, which has fairly good food and great drinks. A short 5-10 minute drive gets you to nearby restaurants, shopping, grocery shopping, etc. Overall, a great place to stay in a great location. We would definitely consider this location if returning to Kauai again.

Room Tip: We liked B300.

Upon arriving in Kauai we discovered that the house we had rented had been double-booked, leaving 8 family members homeless. We contacted Lauren at Poipu Kai Villas and she was an absolute live saver! She was so kind and understanding, a calming influence in an otherwise stressful situation. She worked with us and was able to get us all accommodations immediately. Turns out it was all a blessing in disguise. The Villa units were large, tastefully decorated, comfortable and conveniently located in Poipu. We found everything we needed for fun at the pool or beach including chairs, towels, coolers, toys, boogie boards, etc. And the grounds/pool were beautifully landscaped and well maintained. Lauren was also very accommodating towards the end of our stay in giving us a later check out.

Room Tip: Would recommend the top 4th floor villa units. Much quieter and the view from the lanai is better. And, (the kids really like this part) there is elevator access directly into the unit. The kids felt like rock stars.

The Villas at Poipu Kai were such a great place for the second leg of our honeymoon. Everything was great--the location, view, bed, bathroom (great soaking tub), kitchen and staff. Lauren and her staff were so helpful in welcoming us and were gracious enough to accommodate our late check out. We found everything we needed during our stay and were especially grateful for the black chairs and towels. We were so impressed that we extended our stay for a couple of days! We could hear some noise from the neighbors above and the pool, but this couldn't get in the way of our great stay! Can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Poolside ocean facing.

What a wonderful place! We had Unit C110: a ground floor three bedroom/three bathroom poolside villa… But poolside in name only ~ which delighted us immensely. Located farthest from the pool and in the direction of Poipu Beach, this building (one of six poolside villas) was perfect because only lawn and open space filled our view to the Southwest… no other units in the way, and thankfully not as much noise from the screaming children in the pool. We could walk out on our lanai with a glass of wine and enjoy the grass beneath our toes and a nearly unobstructed view down the hill toward the sunset.

Kudos to Ann and Tawni who were so very helpful with our reservation. They answered all our pre-reservation questions so quickly and then provided a discount car rental code which saved us a bundle on our SUV for the week. Unit came complete with coffee filters for the coffee maker, dish soap for washing up pots and pans, laundry detergent for the occasional wash, and beach towels. Beach chairs, noodles, and boogie boards were all available from the clubhouse. Bathroom soaps and shampoos were hotel-sized, so be sure to bring your own.

Only a few minor complaints. Most notably, the amount of foot traffic noise that could be heard coming from upstairs renters was more than insignificant. We assume they weren’t trying to be noisy … but with wood floors, you have to know that just walking around is loud. And half the time we were vacationing, there were little kids upstairs – prone to running around before their bedtimes. Oh my! Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump……

Finally, the unit as a whole is great. But the cleaning crew or general maintenance crew, for which you’re charged a very pretty penny, should be conscientious of some much needed repairs: burned out bulbs; loose curtain tie-backs; kitchen knives which need actual sharpening, not just steel-straightening; lack of candles in case the power goes out (which it did while we were there); missing television from one of the bedrooms (cord was just hanging out of the middle of the wall??)…. Just odds and ends that makes this a 95 instead of 100, for what that’s worth.

Previous reviews have the property pretty well covered in all its nice aspects. I did not encounter several of the negatives that others have described and will comment on those first. We stayed in a second floor unit. The top unit was occupied, and the overhead noise did not bother us at all. (I can imagine if there were a bunch of kids it might be a concern.) A previous poster said that the lanai was small, and I am sure that he or she was talking about one of the other developments because the lanais here are the best I saw of any of the condos at Poipu. There was plenty of room for six people to eat around the table, along with a couple of lounge chairs and plenty of extra space. I also loved the quality of the furniture they had out there. We spent a lot of time out there and I don't expect to find a place with better lanais. Finally, the pool was perfect for us. I guess if you are used to very warm water, it would feel chilly, but being from Seattle, we spent a lot of time in the pool (an outdoor pool is such a treat to a northwesterner) and found it completely comfortable. I also thought the spa temperature was perfect.

VPK was almost perfect for us. I loved the large amount of space. We were there with my parents and two children, and never felt even close to cramped. I loved the plantation house architecture which was perfect for throwing open the windows and letting the tradewinds come through. We don't like air conditioning, and were never even tempted to turn it on. (mostly we wondered why anyone would prefer it to the amazing cool fresh outside air.) And this is where our only problem lies. With the windows open, we heard the air conditioning compressors nearly round the clock and especially at night. I'm sure if we had windows closed and were using the air conditioning it wouldn't have bothered us. Our particular unit had five compressors out one window and then five more on the end of the next building out another. There were just a few running, and I can't even imagine how loud it would be in the summer when it is warmer and the place is more booked. As I walked by other complexes along the greenbelt, I envied how quiet they were, and then when approaching VPK, I'd hear the constant hum from a distance.

I think this is going to be my biggest challenge in finding a place to stay on Kauai in the future because all the lovely new places have a/c. If it weren't for this, we would certainly return to VPK. I am sure that very few travelers would mind this (no one has ever commented on it before me, after all), but wanted to let those like us know.

Aloha annimag,

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. We think our architecture and spacious accommodations are unique in the islands and we're proud to offer air conditioning as one of our many amenities.

Thanks, too, for addressing some of the concerns posted by other guests. We've installed rugs in many of the rooms, reducing the noise level others had mentioned. The lanais are the biggest on the island, and many people mistakenly refer to other properties in their review, so we appreciate you commenting on both.

You may be interested to know that we have carefully considered your comments regarding the air conditioner noise. Although no other guest had ever mentioned this issue, we've determined that it is a valid point and we are in the planning stages of moving the air conditioner processors to the opposite side of each building to reduce noise.

We've also contacted a new energy-efficient manufacturer of smaller, high capacity processors which are almost silent. These would reduce energy costs for us and provide a better overall guest experience.

Thank you again for your review mentioning this concern and encouraging us to become even better at what we offer to our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back for another stay with us the next time your travel plans include Kauai.

Mahalo and Warmest Regards,

Gary
