“Not your average beach walk”

Makawehi Lithified Cliffs
Reviewed November 17, 2013

The parking lot, just to the east of the Hyatt, was fairly easy to find, with directions from our guide book.

The trailhead, I believe, began near a signpost on the dirt road that leads back to the golf course. We started that way, and it was an interesting jungle-like walk, but not at all what I expected, so when it seemed we could get closer to the ocean by taking the trail back toward the parking lot, we did that, and then it became very obvious which trail fork to take to the cliffs.

It was very beautiful and not particularly crowded, although anyone ahead of you could be in your photo frame if you wanted to snap some photos in their direction. It was fun to watch the waves crash against the cliffs, and to walk down onto various ledges and coves, each with its own colors, and shoreline perspective.

The views off to the east can be considered somewhat tainted because of the golf course that is there. But the mountain behind it, and the coastline in front of it make it barely noticeable in pictures.

There are some tricky paths along the cliffs, but the option to double-back and go higher and further back from the cliff faces is always there, and makes it easy to continue further without too much risk.

Overall, this is a truly splendid hike, and another great, unique place to explore while in Kaua'i.

Crashing waves, incredible views, blow holes, and very interesting terrain; you get it all when you hike along the Makawehi Lithified Cliffs. You can do this beautiful hike all at once, or divide it into more manageable junks (depending on how long you want to hike for). The hike is relatively easy (with good shoes and good balance). Highly recommend!

We walked from the Shipwreck beach parking lot, along the gorgeous beach, and up the natural stone stairs to the top of the cliff. What an amazing view! The pounding blue ocean, the colorful cliffs with interesting curves and holes, and the tropic birds soaring along the coast. We walked east for a few minutes, then turned around to head back because of the midday sun. Even a short walk rewards you with astonishing views.

Was just okay. The cliffs were well weathered but the trails were not really maintained or marked. Some graffiti and vandalism as well.

Though it has lost some of the trail to the ocean it is still a spectacular hike/walk right above the Pacific! Right alongside the Hyatt it is not to be missed!
