Average, but good enough hotel with great beach and nice pool.
Property is a bit dated but good enough.
Reception was awful and miserable woman who gave no assistance as we would not get a full credit for breakfast due to our early flight. Our breakfasts were prepaid at additional cost. After calling a a manager this was professionally and happily resolved.

However you must pre book your car from home. Dollar rental at the hotel tried to charge us about $200 a day for a car and we heard you can rent cars at the airport for $100, however you will have to pay another $40 in taxis to get there. There is a shortage of cars in Kauai and all the car rental companies are "gauging and ripping off" naive tourists. Further guest services at the hotel do not have any printed rates for cars and appear to work on inside commissions to gauge you on high daily car rates. They scribble down prices on paper without telling you the full costs of insurance, taxes, etc - very disconcerting. Avoid all this and lock your in your car cheaply in advance!

My wife and I have been staying at this property since 2003. Seven or eight visits now. It's almost home away from home. We take a week in January each year to relax and recharge. The property and location are great. The staff is fantastic and almost like family now. Can't say enough good things about the whole experience.

We stayed in an Ocean view room that had the most beautiful view of the Ocean/Beach/Pool. it was perfect. We went as they were still completing some of the renovations -- the pool opened not long before we arrived and Rum Fire had not yet opened. As a result, I felt we got a great deal on the room + rental car package.

The staff was friendly and helpful and we experienced no problems during out stay. My only regret is that they were not having their luau's during our visit. :(

I traveled in August 2011 -- but I am just now taking time to submit review.

I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews on this hotel. We just returned from our trip to Kauai and we had a very good experience. You cannot beat the location. The beach is beautiful, the grounds are nice and the staff was friendly. We stayed for 6 days and enjoyed every minute. We had a partial ocean view room on the 1st floor. The room was a bit small but the location was good and it was comfortable for 3 of us. The hotel offers a lot of activities. I would suggest that you book your activities or reserve a cabana by the beach as soon as you arrive since there is limited availability. See the concierge when you check in to get any information that you might need about what's going on at the Sheration or the surrounding area. She was very helpful!

Whenever we come to Kaui we like to spend a few days in Princeville on the north shore (where the scenery is amazing but the weather usually rainy) and a few days in Poipu on the south shore (where the scenery is less spectacular but the weather reliably warm and sunny.) In Princeville we love the St. Regis, which is my favorite hotel anywhere. In Poipu we like the Sheraton in part because (by Hawaii standards) it is so affordable, and in part because it has friendly staff and a nice beach. Oceanfront rooms here are fairly basic but are close to the water, allowing you to go to sleep to the sound of the waves. The staff are usually great, except for this weekend when a hotel meeting planner had the brilliant idea of staging a football playoff-watching party by the pool -- underneath the hotel's best guest rooms -- at 8 a.m. Hawaii time. There is nothing worse than trying to sleep through the noise of 50 drunk people cheering and screaming just a few feet away. This was almost enough to make me check out early, but the manager moved us to another wing of the hotel away from the noise, and it was fine after that. I felt bad for the families whose kids, though, were awakened so early by 50 screaming adults. The other bad thing about this place is the Starwood Platinum breakfast... rather than a lavish buffet (like at the awesome Sheraton Maldives) they offer just a drink, pastry and piece of fruit from a takeaway coffee shop... hands down worst Platinum breakfast anywhere. To their credit they balance this out with some free cocktails and a nice welcome basket of snacks in the room, but the breakfast definitely needs to be improved. Overall this is a nice hotel with nice staff at an affordable price. Its not perfectm but is a good choice on the south shore.

Room Tip: Ask for the ocean wing away from the pool if you want to be on the water but not have to hear the no...

Our stay at Sheraton Kauai couldn't have been better! The staff were always polite and helpful. The location was perfect because of the beach access, and we could go sightseeing either Westward or to the North and East coast. Many restaurants and shopping nearby. Beautiful aloha at the Sheraton!

I was extremely nervous coming here after reading all the negative reviews.
I'm traveling as a party of two, but it seems to be a very family/kid friendly place. The beaches are beautiful and it's right in front.

As for the rooms, I have now stayed in the Garden view room and also the Oceanfront Deluxe.

I want to say that all the negative reviews seem highly exaggerated. First of all, you need to understand that this island is still 80% uninhabited. Given that most of the developed areas make up only 20% of the entire island should give you an idea of the environment here. People expect 5 star quality for the price without giving a second look to what they're referencing. If you think you're going to get the same quality of hotel as you do a metropolitan city, then you should do more research. Given what the island is and the fact that it's a destination spot nonetheless, I think in reference to the other resorts on this island, the price fits. If you want the luxury hotel, then look at the koa kea (sp?) resort. It's beautiful and definitely what you're imagining, but the price is nearly double (as expected).

Expect the $30 a day fee and you won't be surprised. It's all clearly written and they're not trying to "sneak" anything. The garden view room is NOT that bad, for crying out loud. It has a large comfortable bed and my room overlooked the garden pool (which is still beautiful). If you do have the money and opportunity though, look into getting the oceanfront.

As for the service, everyone has been nothing but kind, greeting me everywhere I went, and catered to any request I may have had. If people realized that they were courteous and respectful first, they might get it in return. A lot of the tourists are all hot headed and demand this and that and try to get a rolls royce at a toyota price. The fact that the staff have to put up with these kind of jerks all day makes me wonder how they're so polite to everyone else. Be kind and treat them the way you want to be treated because they've been nothing but helpful and cordial during my entire visit

Room Tip: If you can, get the oceanfront!
