“One of a kind experience”
Reviewed April 26, 2014

This was our first visit to Kauai and chose the Koa Kea resort because of its smaller size and boutique style. I was a little nervous at first because I'm used to staying at bigger resorts with pools and entertainment galore.
From the moment we drove up to the Koa Kea we were greeted by Frank who welcomed us and recognized our names for check in. He escorted us to checkin where we were greeted, taken on a tour of the property, and our ocean view room. Room had amazing view with goose down comforter, very comfy bed, l'occitane products, fun shower, and very clean. I am very picky when it comes to hotel rooms. We got the breakfast-included package which was continental buffet and one hot entree off the menu. Omelette and French toast were great. The sunset can be seen from the beach in front of the property. There are surfers and surfing school available. Close to many restaurants (beach house was our favorite!)
To sum it up: amazing service, rooms, food and drinks. It is a smaller property but with great quality. Not many kids which was a plus. Not the place to come party and blast music either. If you're looking for a quiet get away with above and beyond service and amenities- this is the place!
We will definitely be back.

Having been to the island of Kauai 25+ time since 1972 I always knew about this property, but in the past it had been a low level motel that sat fenced off for many years after the last hurricance. I had stayed next door in the old Waiohai when it was a Stouffer 5 star hotel, many stays at the Hyatt Regency Poipu and honestly never thought I would ever stay here. After reading many reviews on Tripadvisor, my husband and I decided to give it a try for 5 nights after having spent 5 nights on the north shore at his favorite hotel in the world, The St Regis Princeville. There is no way to compare the 2 properties. I would recommend staying at both as they offer completely different experiences.

We stayed in a deluxe ocean front room #278 in the Eha wing, which is honestly the only room type I would book here. You are a stones throw away from the water and the sunsets from the room/balcony are amazing. It is truely the closest room I have ever had to the water in Hawaii. I was worried about privacy with a walkway outside, but it turned out not to be an issue. Overall the room was very nice and beachy, bed 5 star and the bathroom was MUCH nicer than the bathrooms at The St Regis!!!! We never heard our neighbors! Housekeeping was excellent. We received a lovely Hawaiian flower arrangement from management for our anniversary along with champagne and sweets. Very nice!

Our room came with breakfast in Red Salt each morning. While not usually breakfast people, we enjoyed different entrees each morning. As previous reviewers have stated, the banana muffins are to die for. Service was excellent.

We spent most of our days lounging by the pool and enjoyed the serenity of the all adult clientele . You do not have pool attendants who set up lounges for you here like you do in Princeville. We never had a problem getting a lounge with an umbrella. Some days food & drink service was good, other days it was lacking and we would just go and sit at the bar when we wanted another cocktail. Most of the food comes from Red Salts kitchen except for the hot dogs and panini's that the bartender made. The hamburger was one of the best poolside burgers I have had in awhile.

We had 1 dinner in Red Salt and 1 dinner in the lounge/bar area. Food was excellent on both occasions and service excellent. Looking back we wish we had eaten there another night instead of the terrible italian dinner we had at Casa de Ameci which with cocktails and wine was just as expensive as Red Salt.

We had a couples hot rock massage at the spa which was nice, but no frills. The spa was built into a few converted hotel rooms above the lobby. It is just treatment rooms...no relax rooms, steam rooms or the whistles and bells of other resort spas.

The bellman/valets were very friendly, called you by name and were always inquiring about your day/night.

Overall we really liked our stay here. It was very different from all the Hawaiian mega resorts we usually stay at. Yes, prices are high for the lack of resort amenities, but it was worth it to be that close to the sand. We spent $5,000 in 5 nights.

Our only real complaint has to do with the iprefer program and this hotel's interpretation of it. We joined after we had made our reservation through the hotels website and called the hotel to give them our number prior to checking in. We also gave them the number again upon checking in. Unfortuntaley we were never given credit for our stay. We spoke with iprefer customer service who said we should be given points and to call the hotel and ask for them. We did but were told by the hotel that we did not qualify as the number needed to be part of our initial reservation. My request to be put through to a manager was denied. I called back iprefer customer service and they told us to call the hotel back again and ask for the general manager, but we chose to let it go.

Room Tip: Only book Ocean FRONT rooms. The sand is right outside your balcony. The ocean view rooms look ove...

Having visited all the other islands over the years, this was our first trip to Kauai. While I can't say we were impressed with the island overall, the Koa Kea was a very pleasant place to stay.
It is obvious by their service and amenities, that they are trying to compete with the "big guys".
Checkin and valet service were exemplary. The room, though on the small side, was comfortable and beautifully decorated. (My husband might argue the level of comfort of the bed....very soft feather beds made it difficult for him to sleep well)
Complementary bottles of Fiji water, L'Occitaine toiletries, turn down service, etc. were appreciated. Breakfast at Red Salt was enjoyable. The beach is a little small, and rocky in places. Though it may not be important to everyone, accessing the beach is not that easy for anyone with knee/leg impairments, or more elderly, like ourselves. It is a two step down from the grounds, each sandy step being over a foot deep. So we avoided the beach, and enjoyed a cocktail on the large grassy area instead. Having visited the St. Regis area in Princeville, I think I would recommend the Poipu area instead...more restaurants, hotels, better beaches, etc. We were glad we had the opportunity to visit Kauai, but Maui has our hearts.

Room Tip: We were in a garden view room on first level...There is a tall chain link fence separating the next...

My wife and I began our honeymoon at Koa Kea. I had read the reviews and decided that it looked like it was located where I wanted us to be. It was "smaller" and more intimate than the national chains and I believed that the experience would be more personalized. I was correct. The room had a good partial view of the sea, and a lanai for eating snacks and drinking wine. The showers were big with plenty of room. The staff is overwhelmingly attentive. I highly recommend staying here. It is also located close to many attractions and/or ports to go on helicopter tours and boat tours.

Room Tip: Request what you want. If you want to face a certain direction, let them know.

The Koa Kea Resort is the place we will always go back to on Kauai. The staff is so personable. Within 2 days they know you by name. Claudia at the Concierge desk was so helpful. Every bit of advice she gave us was spot on. The food was great. The view from our room was beyond perfect. They have a great beach and pool area. The rooms were nice and had the most comfortable bed ever! The only thing we could fault them on was the housekeeping was inconsistent. Things don't get replaced daily. We had to ask for things like toilet paper. Not the sort of thing you want to run out of. But this won't keep us from going back. The good outweighs one small inconvenience. We can't wait to go back.

Excellent hotel on the beach in the beautiful south of the islands Kauai. It is a small hotel (compared to the big Sheratons and Mariotts and you would like to call it a boutique style hotel.
It is very very clean, has the friendliest staff, great food and the location is close to the airport (about 20 min drive) but far enough to relax, de-stress or get active.
There are very good restaurants and eateries close by, little shops, etc
The hotel offers a very good variety of breakfast choices and offers very very good quality.
The room service is very fast, also provides very good quality of food and a good selection.
The spa offers massages next to the beach and you can relax while listening to the ocean.
The hotel offers a really good size whirlpool which can be used almost 24/7 if you don't get crazy while others sleep. Wonderful.
The hotel offers all different kind of water sports equipment and within few meters you are already in the ocean.
The area around the hotel is very quiet, calm and relaxing.
This hotel I would highly recommend for couples. Families with children might want to choose another hotel (no offense).
We will definitely be back and choose the same again - because it was simply the best choice we made.

Room Tip: all rooms (standard category) have at least a glimpse of the ocean but you do NOT want to be next to...

When we were looking at hotels in Kauai, we wanted to make sure that we stayed in a part of the island where the weather was less temperamental (we chose Poipu), and the hotel itself wasn't too big or impersonal.

The Koa Kea was a great choice for us. The rooms were well appointed and the staff was very helpful and friendly. With only 120 rooms, its a lot smaller than some of the offerings put forward from the likes of the big chains that dominate a lot of the islands.

The pool and bar area had plenty of room relative to other options and you are legitimately on the beach. Good walking distance to Brennacke's for food or drink options as well as to some other hotels (and bars).

We ate at Red Salt, their signature restaurant, one night and have good things to say about the restaurant as well. Very tasty and well appointed, as you would expect from the hotel more in this category, although don't forget to book.
