“Different side of paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

We returned this year only to find the Koa Kea as wonderful as our last experience. The wonderful staff remembered us from our previous stay. That would be hard to believe since it had been a few years, but maybe it is because the way the whole staff is prepped before you arrive. All of our questions and needs were answered and handled sincerely and with an island smile! Service is top notch. What a rarity in today's world.
The Red Salt is probably one of the best restaurants on the south side of the island and shouldn't be missed. Tailored breakfast and special Sushi nights at the bar were my favorite relaxing times at the Koa Kea.
On this trip we took a road trip to the north side of the island and found it more hectic and commercial. If golf and busy beaches are your thing, the north side with their large resorts are for you. But if you want a relaxing vacation. Try a different side of paradise.

We stayed at Koa Kea in July 2013 for a week and had an amazing time! Each and every staff member made sure that our stay was perfect! They had the best customer service we've every experienced from the valet who each morning would bring our car to the front immediately and then ask if we needed any directions (and knew exactly where we were going on the day we asked for directions) to the housekeeping staff who come twice a day to clean the room and make sure that you have a full set of towels (which is perfect because after swimming at the beach, you'll be showering a few times a day). The concierge, Claudia, was super knowledgeable about all of the different activities on the island. She knew exactly what we were looking for and found us the best deals, and also made a dinner reservation at a different restaurant. We would definitely stay here again if we came back to Kauai. It's a quiet and romantic hotel with a beautiful beach nearby.

Just returned from staying at the Koa Kea in Kauai. As most others have mentioned, this is a boutique hotel. We found the bed and customer service to be very good. If one is seeking a small, quiet hotel with very personable service, then you will be happy with the Koa Kea. Not sure why this hotel was rated as best on Kauai for 2012 and 2013 as the value isn't there.

Pros:
Valet service
Customer service in general is very good.
Bed and linens
Towels and toiletries are first class

Cons:
The pool is very small
No real beach to speak off in front of the hotel.
Rooms are on the small side
Onsite restaurant is very expensive
Room Rate is very expensive (on the same level as the Grand Hyatt).
Bottled water and coffee are provided sparingly.
Tucked behind/beside the Marriott and not easy to find

This was our first visit to Kauai.
We decided to stay here for the smaller size and the location. It was also our anniversary and we wanted a bit of a splurge. We loved our partial ocean view. We found the room very clean and relaxing. Their linens are quite fabulous. The pool is beautiful and just the right temperature. The staff is extremely friendly and sincere.
We would definitely return.

The Red Salt restaurant had great service and yummy food.

My girlfriend and I spent a week at this wonderful resort. Hotel staff was so professional, friendly and helpful. Resort was part of the boardwalk, so you could walk on the path to other hotels and beaches. Daily included breakfast was very good. Our room was clean and comfortable. Overall, relaxing stay that may have added years to our lives! Would and have recommended resort to friends and families!!

Partial ocean view was so much better than most under that category, lovely and comfortable as well. The property is tucked nicely in front of the ocean and a small snorkeling beach. The Poipu location is perfect for access to activities, restaurants and shopping...and staying right there.

We chose to stay at the Koa Kea for the second part of our honeymoon, after viewing practically all the hotels on the island over the internet beforehand. It was exactly what we hoped for, our room was one of the ones NOT overlooking the pool which was our preference and meant it was quieter and more private.
We did use the pool a few times and it's very nice and compact, it never got too full but we generally used it at the very beginning or end of the day as we were out and about during. It's mainly a place for couples (of all ages), I don't remember seeing any children, which I expected, as it's more of a boutique hotel than a complex.
The rooms are very stylish, nice big beds and a lovely shower room, the TV had lots of channels which my husband was pleased about. The outside space for each room was peaceful and I only ever saw a couple of people at the same time as me using theirs (screens between each rooms' outdoor space might be nice).
The staff at the hotel are very friendly and knowledgeable, we booked a helicopter trip through the concierge area and it was very easy. We were able to get single coffee pods at reception when we'd run out in our room. Also the valet's advised me about driving an automatic (don't use your gear foot for the brake, use your accelerator foot :) ) They were also very good for directions, they have little direction cards which were great.
I would definitely recommend the restaurant for both breakfast and evening meals, I had pancakes for breakfast more than once and the vegetarian option for the evening meal I had twice (on different nights). My husband thought there meat dishes were very good.
The beach in front of the hotel is lovely, but if you are not a strong swimmer I recommend walking through the Marriott to the end of the beach and snorkelling there - I am a very weak swimmer, so I hired a float at the hotel as well as all the snorkelling gear.
If I ever go back to the country I will definitely go back to the Koa Kea, as a romantic honeymoon destination I don't think any hotel could beat it, that said I would probably also book a few days on the north side of the island too, as I would liked to have seen more of that than our couple of drives over there let me.
Finally the complimentary wine that was brought to our room on arrival was very nice :)
