“Mahalo Koa Kea!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

My wife and I booked part 1 of our Hawaiian honeymoon at the Koa Kea. We stayed 5 nights at the hotel and loved every minute of it. The grounds were quiet, clean, beautiful and not crowded, the pool was smaller but sufficient, the whirlpool was great, the ocean view was amazing and close. We never had to worry about rushing to find a poolside chair as it was never really crowded. The service at the poolside bar and activity/rental desk was great. The poolside food & drinks were very good. The location of the resort might be the best spot overall on the island. Renting a car is a must though as there is lots to see and do in Kauai. Poipu is a great location that's close to shops and restaurants, along with a great beach area (soft sand) within a minute on both sides of the resort. To the right is a much nicer beach and was not nearly as crowded. You can surf, swim and snorkel at the same beach. The Red Salt restaurant was perfect. We had a breakfast deal included and it was awesome. Hot entrees plus a mini buffet area. The restaurant has a beautiful layout with a nice view. Valet parking was free and the staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. The rooms were clean and the beds were extremely comfy. The room had a nice little balcony, the bathroom was nice with large showers with 2 shower heads. We had a partial ocean view room which was more than enough. Overall this was one of, if not the best hotel we've ever stayed in. We wanted a quieter hotel and thats what we got. Fyi - there were mainly adults/couples at the resort, very few kids which was perfect for us. Once again Mahalo to the staff and hotel for a memorable honeymoon! We will recommend you and hopefully return for a future anniversary.

Fantastic hotel with a great restaurant and bar. Rooms were big with views of the ocean. Bathrooms were well appointed and more importantly clean. All the staff were great.

During whale season you can sit at the pool or pool bar and watch the whales breech less than an half mile offshore. Snorkeling from their beach is good too.

The only negative was the gym was a little short on equipment but who really goes to hawaii for a gym.

We stayed at this hotel for part of our honeymoon. It was the best hotel I have stayed in. Great location, friendly & helpful staff.
The food at Red Salt (breakfast and evening) was exceptional
Would love to return at somepoint and would recommend to anyone

We booked 7 nights summer 2012 at the Koa Kea based on Trip Advisor award and customer comments. So glad we did, because we ended up extending our stay by another 4 nights. Beautiful boutique hotel, excellent customer service, fantastic food (Red Salt is one of the best restaurants on the island), extraordinary views and any activity you wanted was easy to book. Anyone can and will help you - no matter the need or desire. The Koa Kea goes out of its way to make your experience on Kauai the best it can be. Visit the Hyatt, but stay at the Koa Kea. You'll be glad you did.

Room Tip: Ocean front deluxe - a good value and a great view!

We were guests at the Koa Kea for one night in March. Though it was pricey, it did not disappoint. The room was stunning, clean, crisp, and beautifully furnished. You could not ask for a more comfortable bed. The property sits right on the beach and is the perfect recipe for relaxation. We especially enjoyed how quiet and peaceful the atmosphere was...especially compared to the big name resorts nearby that were overrun with screaming kids.

Our package included a $50 voucher to Red Salt where we enjoyed a delicious dinner of fresh fish. The breakfast was quite extravagant with plenty of options and very friendly service.

We enjoyed every minute of our stay and would love to go back someday!

We stayed at the koa kea in Jan 2012 for 5 nights. We were upgraded to one of the beach front rooms meaning that we could take 5 steps and be on the sand. Amazing. The pool was quite cool so we only ended swimming in it once. We spent most of our time swimming and snorkeling off the beach just in front of our room where there was an amazing array of fish in really shallow water close to the shore. We are from Australia and have done some great snorkeling in the past but this tops the list. We did go snorkeling at the bigger beach to the left of the hotel (in front of the apartment time share place) where the water was deeper but much murkier. The restaurant at the hotel was good but on the pricey side so we ended up eating at the nearby shopping complex which had a choice of several more moderately priced restaurants. We didn't have a car and it was about a 10 minute stroll from the hotel. The only improvement I have for the hotel is to have a better more diverse room service menu. We would have eaten in our room (looking at the amazing view) more if the food had more variety. We loved this hotel for being smaller with less of the madding crowd and less children than other places we stayed I Hawaii. We had some issues with a tour that was arranged through the hotel and the hotel staff were great at helping us sort it out and get a partial refund. I would highly recommend staying at the koa kea.

Good things about this hotel: modern furnishings, quiet and cozy compared to the mega resorts in the area, very good restaurant for dinner, good service, nice view from the lawn area, beach close by.

However, I can’t say this is a 5 star resort or that our “Ocean view” room was worth 400 plus a night. We stayed in room 208 directly above the lobby and while you can see the ocean, there is also about 20 feet of roof in our view. The hotel should look into making a green roof, or for these rooms, extend the balconies so that while you might not have the greatest view, you have a great sized balcony. As others have noted, the blankets on the bed were ridiculous – don’t even try to sleep with the down comforter. Ask for a sheet on check in so you can use the thinner blanket in the closet.

Ultimately, you can tell that this hotel was built around an old motel lay out. Unfortunately, a majority of the rooms won’t have any sort of great view. The pool, while pretty, is small and I felt I was sitting very close to others at the pool. There were a couple of kids during our stay and since the property is small, you could hear them wherever you sat. Not a deal breaker, as the parents were good about keeping them quiet, but I think the hotel may want to consider making this resort “adults only” to justify the high price.

I am glad we stayed here over the Grand Hyatt, but this hotel is pricey for what you get and anticipate that your room may not have the view you were hoping for. We stayed in Kapaa in a beach front condo for a week before coming to Koa Kea and I am glad we did that as I can’t imagine paying the price to stay here for more than just a few nights. We also really enjoyed the north end of the island much more than the south. If you do book here, sign up for the i prefer program and get the breakfast package with the resort credit.
