Castle Kaha Lani
Reviewed April 12, 2013

Our condo was wonderful! 211 has a beautiful view, nicely updated kitchen and bath rooms. The mattress could be replaced but otherwise it was outstanding! Staff was wonderful, particularly the security staff. Pete(Junior) is an abide story teller and a delight to have around. He greeted us when we arrive(it was almost 10pm) and assisted us to the condo and even unlocked the door for us when my wife had trouble with the lock. I look forward to coming back to Kaha Lani.

We were assigned Unit 204 at check in. Our stay covered an 8 day period--end of March into first part of April. Before going into detail about the unit and the property you need to understand how the reservation process works. The property consists of units that are lived in year around by the owners and others that are in a rental pool. You may hear glowing reviews about a particlular unit but there is no promise that, even if you request it at time of reservation, that you will receive the unit or the particular building. Management cannot make any promises because the owner has first rights to stay in their own unit.

We got lucky with Unit 204--a single bedroom but with a queen bed and a bath and a half. Not all units have the extra half bath--in fact they don't advertise the units as such because--you guessed it, they can not quarantee that your assigned unit will have that or anything but twin beds. The unit was on the second floor in Building 2--an ocean view vs an ocean front.

If it is important to look at a map of the property--suggest www.hawaiirevealed.com for a nice picture of the layout. Your bedroom and full bath will most likely overlook the parking area. It is nice to be on a top floor. The units do not have a/c and you will have your windows open. There will be noise from the lanais, from people walking up and down the stairs and from the parking lot.
Understand this going in, the walls are thin and the design is such that you will hear a lot of sounds including those people walking in the unit above you.

We liked the central location and ease to get to supermarkets without being in a town. Each morning we made use of the paved walking trails around Lydgate State Park. You are surrounded by the park and its use and traffic could be an issue at certain times of the year--we had no problem and considered it a plus for us.

Our unit was recently remodeled and we enjoyed it and the proximity to the pool. Building 2 does not have the traffic noise that some of the other buidings have. We have stayed in quite a few rental condos around the country and found this one to be one of the most updated. Nice flat screen tv with a DVD player and good wifi. The kitchen appliances were top notch. One reviewer had issues with the plates and dishes--a ton of them, and yes, they didn't all match, but we had everything we could have asked for. Oh, and those bowels you bought in protest--thanks, we liked them.

Our closing thoughts. We like the area and the fact that it can be quiet. We would not recommend it for young people and large groups that want to party. It is more of a "be old and quiet" type of place. They are serious about the quiet hours. Families with kids will be attracted due to the park--take advantage of the ground floor units. Smokers--you really need to go elsewhere--they have designated smoking areas far away from your unit. We will definitely consider a return trip but know that we may not get as lucky with our draw.

Room Tip: Try for a top floor but really go for a recently renovated unit

We were here for 8 days in mid February. A family with two older sons. Our condo had two bedrooms, two bathrooms. The young guys had their own room and bathroom. Parents had their own room, ensuite, and separate lanai. Closets were large. The condo was large, clean, and had everything you would need. The place was quiet, location was excellent. The oceanfront condo had fantastic views, lie in bed and watch the sunrise over the ocean from the patio door. The pool was smallish, but lovely. Beautiful at night. My only beef was our lanai furniture. While it looked nice, it was almost unusable. It was plastic wicker and the internal metal had rusted, meaning that when you sat on it, it marked your clothes. I found this out the hard way when I put a white bathing suit on it to dry, and my suit got all marked with rust marks. After that, I always placed a towel down before sitting on the chair. Things rust easily in Kauai, especially this close to the ocean, but a different type of furniture out there would be better. The floor of the lanai was stained with rust, it was all over the furniture. We had very little interaction with staff, but they were helpful. The grounds were very well kept.

Room Tip: We had an ocean front room. The view was spectacular. All quiet except the sound of the surf, whic...

Kaha Lani is easy to access from the airport and is a great central location for exploring all of Kauai. We stayed in unit #205 from March 12-19, 2013, and enjoyed our vacation thoroughly. The 1 bedroom was homey with lots of island style decor, a fully stocked kitchen and a great view of the ocean. We spotted a humpback whale from our balcony within 10 minutes of arriving! Overall, we had a good stay and these pros and cons are somewhat nit picky. Also, there are no restaurants within walking distance but it takes only about 10 minutes to drive to food and shopping.

The Pros:
- Right next to the ocean, no roads to cross to get your toes into the sand (beware that swimming is dangerous in that area; best to take the short walk to Lydgate Beach)
- Clean unit, well manicured grounds and clean pool, friendly staff
- Awesome view from an "ocean view" unit with a large balcony (the "ocean facing" unites had a direct view whereas we had a few palm trees in our line of sight, but that didn't stop us from lots of whale sightings)
- Fully stocked kitchen, beach umbrella and one folding chair, beach toys, laundry basket, beach towels
- Convenient location to visit other regions of the island
- Right next to the paved walking trail for leisurely strolls along the coast for several miles
- Pack 'n Play provided at no extra charge for our 6-month-old baby

The Cons:
- Wifi was provided but didn't seem to work well; internet connection on my iPhone4s using AT&T was slow (but not a huge deal since I spent more time staring at the ocean than my phone)
- Shower head was old and didn't make a good spray, although water pressure was good
- No hot tub; pool was okay size and good temperature
- No air conditioning; this wasn't an issue for us traveling in March as we kept windows open or ceiling fans on, but I imagine it could be a bit hot in summer
- Smell of bbq from pool area occasionally drifted up but we just closed sliding glass door to balcony; could be an issue if you were in one of the units to the south
- Mattress was not great but not horrible
- Sounds of the highway heard from the bedroom (we moved the mattress to the living room to hear the ocean and to make it safe for our baby to sleep in bed with us)

If we return to Kauai we will probably stay in the Poipu area as the beach there was awesome for snorkeling. Lydgate Beach has a man-made protected rock wall that makes snorkeling and swimming safe but not that exciting. Anini Beach had probably the best and most expansive safe snorkeling thanks to a barrier reef, and we also saw lots of sea turtles!

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are probably just as good as ocean front, plus you have a little more privacy. If y...

ron young set this all up with diane. we got there saturday march 9th, after getting rained out on the back nine at puakea. we checked in as april assisted us. that began the most wonderful time at your property. the two bedroom units with two baths .... the views looking at the ocean.... so peaceful and beautiful landscaping. having the coffee maker and your special kauai coffee .... listening to the infomercial of the island ... getting ready for another day of golf at wailua. then back to the kaha lani as we unfortunately had to return to honolulu. again, april bent over backwards to help all of us. you just do not get this time of service and aloha from everyplace anymore. we had a time where we did not know how to use the dvd and someone came over to help us instantly. as we all returned to our lives in honolulu, all we could talk about was when we could return to kauai and the kaha lani.
mahalo .... aloha .... until we meet again.

Room Tip: depending on the size of your group .. the two bedrooms are like heaven . would like to know more a...

This was our first trip to Kauai, my parents recommended Kaha Lani. I booked the trip month's in advance and thought I had booked an oceanFRONT room, a week before the trip I realized I had mistakenly booked oceanVIEW. I called and asked if I could switch, they didn't have any open Ocean Front at the time, I asked if we could have a 3rd floor room. When we arrived April at the desk saw my request for oceanfront, she said they had one, but she wanted us to look at our oceanview room first and if we still wanted oceanfront she would move us. The room was SPECTACULAR! It was on the 3rd floor. We had the most amazing view. Sunrise everyday off of our balcony, an unobstructed view of full ocean, we saw whales daily, it was just the best. The room was also fully stocked with everything you could possibly need to live! We chose to cook and eat every breakfast at the room because the view was just as good if not better than any restaurant The property is beautiful and very quiet and the staff excellent. It's also a great location on the East side so close to the south and north. Thanks so much, we'll be back! (my review shows "terrible" for "fitness center" I can't clear it, there is no fitness center, but there is nothing terrible about this property!)

Room Tip: 3rd floor ocean front or view, either give an excellent view. I can't change the fitness center...

We stayed for 2 nights in a 1 bedroom unit 110 which was a ground floor unit right by the pool. When we checked in, I was a bit disappointed as the room had not been updated in some time and was a bit tired, but clean and was stocked with everything we needed. However, after the first night, I wished we could have stayed longer. The staff was wonderful! We have two toddlers so our unit located right next to the pool was perfect. We had a view of the ocean and could hear the crashing of the waves which was wonderful. The unit has beautiful floor to ceiling windows that span the full length of the living and dining room with a large sliding door out to the lenai.. There is a very large grassy area in front of the resort, which was great for my kids to play. Very convenient 5 minute walk to Lydgate Park, and paved walking/running trail. The units are individually owned, and are made up of mostly retired couples, so it's very quiet. Each unit is updated differently depending on the individual owner. The pool, although small, was beautiful, very clean, and never crowded. I slept on the sleeper sofa with one of my kids, it was surprisingly very comfortable with a memory foam mattress. We left the windows open at night and loved hearing the waves crash as we went to sleep. Another bonus, we didn't see or hear a single chicken, so they must have a way to control them. We loved the fact that there wThe resort is centrally located, 5 minutes to Kapaa, 10 minutes to Lihue, 30 mins to Poipu. Overall, I would love to go back to Castle Kaha Lani!

Room Tip: Unit by the pool and ground floor if you have kids
