My wife and I are kamaaina from Oahu looking for a nice neighbor island retreat. We found the perfect set up at Kaha Lani. It hit all the points of convenience, cleanliness, ocean access, and safe for kids. We were there for 4 nights total. The central location allowed us to see all parts of the island with ease. I am a fisherman and I was able to throw out my pole just steps from the lanai! I couldn't have asked for more. We lucked out and I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Stayed at this place for one week and all in all it is not a really bad place. There is a full kitchen and most of the appliances are in new and working shape. The utensils are dated but they still work. The pots and pans, glassware, plates are decent enough, but would strongly encourage giving them a quick wash before using. From the balcony sliding door the beach is within 100-200 feet walking distance which is the top perk of staying at this location. A nice cool ocean breeze can be enjoyed all hours with just the screen door. The bathrooms and showers are older but they get the job done. The most important advice we can pass to others is NEVER stay on the bottom floor. If there are tenants staying above, it will sound like a very large herd of elephants stomping across your ceiling and if they happen to be people on a different time zone...say PST when you are EST then prepare for at least 3 hours of mind numbing floor stomping that will have you tearing at your hair. If the tenants above happen to be heel walkers then anticipate it sounding like 2-3 herds of elephants stomping across your ceiling. Another item to keep an eye out for are the kitchen windows at night. these windows never close all the way and if left open, will invite in every known insect on the island. The only other complaint we have concerning the location is that the sofa smelled like old dirty sweat which was kind of a mood breaker. Also, check the shower drain to see if the brass filter is lodged in the drain, if it is, remove it before showering or you may be wading in knee high water.

The nice things about staying at this location, overall it is fairly quiet, assuming one is staying further away from the office area, it is a good central location to be able to access north, south, and west parts of the island. Kapaa is a nearby town (approximately 4-5 miles) and has many store offerings, including Safeway, Foodland, health food stores, post office, and many restaurants. There is also a nearby bike/pedestrian path that once figured out can get one all the way to Boss Frogs Surf/Snorkel/Tour shop, dealing with minimal vehicle traffic. The beaches in the area are very nice, quiet, and pristine. The beds are newer and in good condition with adequate body support, plus no bed bugs were spotted.

Staying at this location works okay if you spend most of your time traveling around and seeing different places on the island, or going on tours and only using it for cooking/eating, showering, and sleeping. If you have plans on staying at a place where you can hang out inside all day, there is room for improvement. But for the price and the amenities, this place does offer much more than a standard hotel room.

FYI: We did spot one centipeded inside the unit and a flying roach on the patio table but overall the inside of the place was mostly bug free.

Room Tip: getting a top floor is a must

Our condo accommodations at Kaha Lani were all we could ask for. From what we read and heard our unit (building 7, 220) was one of the most desirable (with granite counters, tropical decor), and we enjoyed every sunrise (perfectly framed by palms) of our 5-day stay from our second-level lanai. Kaha Lani was just the kind of condo we were hoping for; secluded from the “rural rush” but close to attractions, including Lydgate Park with its swimming beaches to the north and an interesting play bridge to the south, both a short walk along the beautiful shoreline. We flew directly into Lihue Airport, about 10 minutes to the south and Wailua (for shopping, dining) was about the same distance north. The location is convenient for trips to the North Shore or Waimea Canyon and close to helicopter tours near the airport.

Room Tip: Building 7 at Kaha Lani appears to be one of the closest to the shore and all units should have a good ocean view. Some other units (near the pool) set farther back and may have limited views.

We recently spent 10 nights at the Kaha Lani in an ocean front unit, bldg. 7, unit 221. Our first impressions; the grounds are amazing and immaculately kept! There is some renovations of the exteriors of some of the buildings in progress. Upon opening the door of our unit - the view of the ocean was breathtaking! The unit itself was dated, though minor updates like paint, and fixtures had been done - there was much more that could be done to update and maintain this unit. We believe the kitchen cabinets and bathroom are the original. The lack of air conditioning is not an issue with the ocean breeze! Most importantly, the bed was comfortable! The location was central on the island and allowed us to visit most areas conveniently, and was close to shopping, restaurants. Also, there was peace and quiet! Other than the usual sounds of an occasional neighbor coming or going, the chickens, roosters made the most noise. However, you quickly realize they are everywhere on the island - be it on a hiking trail, or the grocery store parking lot. Curiosity had me looking at other resort type areas, but Kaha Lani clearly was the best choice for us, and I believe for others also. The option to prepare our own meals and to be in a condo was very comfortable and seemingly more private. I did use the laundry facilities (I just set the timer, and enjoyed a dip in the pool while waiting)! We were a bit dubious after reading some of the other reviews, but were very pleased with our stay at the Kaha Lani!

Room Tip: Choose an ocean front suite!

We enjoyed the ocean views and breeze from the third floor (building 8, unit 327), our unit was spacious and had everything we needed. Very nice staff who also offered suggestions to us for things. Would have rated it very good, but Lydgate State Park campers had loud late-night parties in the soccer parking lot next door, and one night had smoke from a camp fire blowing into our windows, forcing us to shut them. That concern would force us to look elsewhere next time.

Room Tip: Upper ocean front floors are better to provide a stronger breeze, as the units do not have a/c.
