Owner description: Exploring KAUAI BY KAYAK since 1977 For years, Island Adventures has introduced visitors and Kama'ainas (residents), to the magic of the Hule'ia River and it's 241 acres of National Wildlife Refuge. More recently, the owners of this small company set out to improve on what was already known to our visitor industry professionals as one of the very best kayak trips on Kauai. "We set out in search of an elusive waterfall that existed only in the memories of a handful of long time Kauai locals. Because of the thick jungle growth, an aerial survey of the area was fruitless. This search for a secret waterfall was to send us on a mission, through thick tangled jungle with no cut trails. After several difficult trips into the valley we were rewarded with the sound of rushing waters. Still, dense vegetation made it impossible to get a close look. We could hear it but couldn't see it" It took two more attempts for the Island Adventures crew of explorers to make their most exciting discovery. After rappelling down a cliff to the river below, the found not one, but two treasures: Jungle Waterfalls, the tallest one was over 50' high. A whole year and a half later, a trail had been mapped and cut. Now you don't havce to be Tarzan to enjoy this very special place, which has become the main destination of Island Adventures latest tours. "This Ain't No Zipline" and "Hawaiian Dundee".

We booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Lines.

This excursion is done out of a small harbor next to the pier. The tour is done on private property that is undeveloped truly Hawaiian land.

The kayak portion is very easy, you are paddling up a short river, and the wind is at your back. Along the way they stop you in a few areas for story time. You will be getting wet so i would recommend sturdy shoes that you can easily take off for the kayak portion, and wear your beach clothes. I wore running shoes with socks to wear for the hiking portion, but i wish i would have worn my hiking crocs or water socks. The rocks at the falls were a little pointy. The hike isn't bad I saw all ages walking this trail. But If you have bad knees this might be a little much for you. We visited 2 private waterfalls and were able to swim/climb under the falls for a photo-op. After the hike you get a yummy sandwich, chips, and a juice drink.

Overall this excursion was rather tame for the price, but what can you expect if you book through the cruise line! I would recommend this to just about everyone especially family's kids within the age limits will have no problem with this tour.

Island Adventures offers a great kayaking trip on Kauai.
We chose IA because they are one of two companies that kayak on the Hule'ia Stream. (instead of Hanalei and Wailua)

We were in a group of 26 novice kayakers. With two knowledgeable and friendly guides.

Kayak was about 2 hours with a few stops for history, rope swing, and cookie snack. YUM!

Hike for 15 minutes through a jungle to a small waterfall and bamboo trees. Great picture op.

Drive less than 5 minutes to a trailhead down to a un-named waterfall and pool. Rocky but lots of fun. Hike back up the trail to picnic under pavilions.

FYI was not expecting much from the lunch but WOW! The sandwiches, chips, and tea were really good.

Drive 10 minutes back to cars while passing Menehune Fish Pond.

Ray and Jr. were the BEST! We loved their humor and they also gave us lots of tips for future activities. I would highly recommend this over busy Wailua River trips.
