Owner description: Exploring KAUAI BY KAYAK since 1977 For years, Island Adventures has introduced visitors and Kama'ainas (residents), to the magic of the Hule'ia River and it's 241 acres of National Wildlife Refuge. More recently, the owners of this small company set out to improve on what was already known to our visitor industry professionals as one of the very best kayak trips on Kauai. "We set out in search of an elusive waterfall that existed only in the memories of a handful of long time Kauai locals. Because of the thick jungle growth, an aerial survey of the area was fruitless. This search for a secret waterfall was to send us on a mission, through thick tangled jungle with no cut trails. After several difficult trips into the valley we were rewarded with the sound of rushing waters. Still, dense vegetation made it impossible to get a close look. We could hear it but couldn't see it" It took two more attempts for the Island Adventures crew of explorers to make their most exciting discovery. After rappelling down a cliff to the river below, the found not one, but two treasures: Jungle Waterfalls, the tallest one was over 50' high. A whole year and a half later, a trail had been mapped and cut. Now you don't havce to be Tarzan to enjoy this very special place, which has become the main destination of Island Adventures latest tours. "This Ain't No Zipline" and "Hawaiian Dundee".

I have taken guided kayaking tours in the Everglades, Vancouver Island, Acadia National Park, Hilton Head Island, and the San Juan Islands. I have also taken a couple of kayaking harbor tours. The Island Adventures tour on Kauai was by far the most intense. It is 2.5 miles upstream. The current is minimal and the wind is at your back, but the paddling is constant. The trip is on the Hule'ia river and it goes thru a wildlife preserve but the pace set by the tour leader prevents stopping to see a bird or an interesting plant. You will need to do 60+ strokes per minute or you will fall behind. On the plus side, Island Adventures is very safety oriented. In addition to the leader there were two other staff members kayaking with the group and a small power boat followed the group. The rappelling part of the trip was also very safety focused. However, our group had 26 guests so the rappelling took a very long time. There was a significant amount of time spent waiting for everyone in the party to rappel. If you are an inexperienced or infrequent kayaker I would not take this trip. If you want to try rappelling for the first time these would be the company to use. Safety is clearly a top priority.

My husband and I went on our honeymoon here in Kauai and one of the things we wanted to do was to ride the helicopter - both our first time!! From the reservations online, everyone we talked to in the company was so polite and accommodating! Even made sure we understood all the directions and instructions prior to checking in. Great smooth ride, we were also very fortunate that the day was very clear. We would certainly recommend this to anyone!

We did the Discover Jungle Falls trip which includes river kayaking, a short hike, rappelling down a waterfall and picnic lunch. This trip was a lot of fun and one of the highlights of our trip to Kauai. You start with about 1-1.5 hour peaceful kayak down the Hule’ia River. The current was with us so paddling is not too strenuous and you really get to enjoy the surroundings and listen to the guide speak about the area's history, wildlife and plants. Next is a quick little hike followed by a short ride to the rappelling area in a wildlife refuge. The rappelling instructor is excellent. I had never rappelled before (I don't think anyone in our group had). We started with a lesson on a small dry cliff/hill to get used to rappelling before we hiked down to the waterfall. The rappelling was so much fun! We then were able to move over to a different waterfall and swim for a short while. The trip ended with a picnic lunch overlooking the wildlife refuge- so beautiful! All of the guides were extremely nice and helpful. The tour is very organized and we really enjoyed it.

This expedition was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide Charlie is native to the area and is very knowledgeable on the history and was able to share the true meaning of aloha with my family while keeping us safe especially while rappelling down the 27 foot waterfall. We were completely inexperienced, but he taught us all the sequences to get us down the slippery cliff safely.

Kayaking was 2 miles long up river. The jungle hike had a rugged, but well beaten path, and the crew were open to questions and eager to support our waterfall challenge. We highly recommend that this tour should not be missed if you are physically fit and looking for a challenging adventure. They are looking forward to taking their tour down a 60 ft waterfall as well in the future. They hope it will be open when we come back!

We did the kayak/waterfall trip on New Year's Eve and it was fantastic. The guides were friendly and very well informed. The kayaking was not rough. The short hike was pretty. But really it is all about the waterfalls here. You hike down and can take two trips rappelling down a 30 ft waterfall face. Completely exhilirating. Even if you choose not to go down the falls you can watch others. The tour finishes with a short hike to a 60 ft waterfall that you can walk behind or swim below. I spent the rest of our week in Kauai telling people about this tour. Best way to spend a 50th birthday ever.
