“Pretentious; Not for Families”

We immediately knew we were not welcome. While we failed to anticipate the formal atmosphere that would greet us at this particular restaurant, we chose to follow through with our reservation and were confident our kids would rise to the occasion. (Our kids are young but fairly well traveled and generally at ease in adult situations.) Though we did not delay in choosing what to order, an entire hour elapsed before any food arrived to the table. The owner was completely unsympathetic when we raised the issue about the tardy service, and again when we brought to his attention an error in one of the items we ordered. On the upside, our cocktails were expertly prepared.

“Best Italian food ive had in years!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2006

My wife and I, and a few freinds went to Kauai on a diving trip.
We absolutley love Italian food! When we found out about Cafe Portofino,
and heard it was the best Italian restaurant on the islandwe had to check it out. We were very suprised on how great everything was. From the food, to the live harp music. The veal was awesome, cooked perfectly with a lemon piccatta sauce! The wine list was awesome as well. Also the music was wonderful, played live by what seemed to be a very talented musician. I can see why they have as many awards as they do. We all had a great time and the owner of the restaurant was very helpful in getting us a great table overlooking the bay. He was very carismatic and sweet to us! We travel all over the world, and have eaten at many Italian restaurants and this is definatly one of the best.

Recommended Very Much! A+

“Like being on the Amalfi Coast”

This is a place that has great charm. It is on the 2nd floor including a balcony terrace overlooking the beach and the harbor. Candlelight and a harpist have provided us with three romantic evenings there. The food varies from sublime to heavy. The classic veal dishes are wonderful. The eggplant parmagiana suffers from too much breading and cheese. Service was excellent on two visits, but almost non-existant on a third visit on a Saturday night. Terrace seating is limited. The wine list has some amazing wines at reasonable markups.

“Excellent food!”

I loved the food here, the atmosphere, excellent location. The waitress was very sweet and attentive. I know the owner's son so I got to meet him and thought he was a very pleasant and friendly man! Will definitely go here again when I return to Kauai.

“Best food we had all week”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2006

My wife and I both visited this restaurant in 2004 and were so satisfied that we visited it again this year (June). In both cases we were both extremely happy and satisfied with the food quality, quantity and selections. In both cases we were treated quite well both by the owner and the staff and in fact it as if they couldn't do enough.

It is unfortunate that previous comments in this list were dissatisfied as our experiences have been good everytime we went. The owner was very friendly and kept asking if we were satisfied with the food and service. The hostess constantly kept asking (after about every other bite) if the food was to our satisfaction, etc. Although rather expensive, "we felt we definitely got what we paid for".

We also do not usually enjoy music with our meals, but at this restaurant the background music was the harp and as a result was very soothing and enjoyable during the dinner. In fact we had finished our dinner after the music just started and wanted to stay but assume the staff would eject us as they were getting busy and would need the table. They (and the owner) said not to worry that to just sit and enjoy ourselves and the music.

I hope that others will have the experience we have had and we will definitely go back again the next time we are in Kauai.

Regards,

Reid and Carol Bristor
