“average food”
Reviewed April 19, 2014

We had a pretty non-descript dinner here. Seating was a bit crowded although it was nice that it was open air. Nothing special. Ate here only because it was at the Kauai Marriott where we were staying.

“A bit on the pricey side”
Reviewed April 15, 2014 via mobile

As the title says, "A bit on the pricey side" , but the food was very tasty. There was four of us went to dinner and we had a table at the rail overlooking the beach. It was windy so the cafe had the clear plastic wind screens down. It was a good view, but would have been way better if the wind shades were up.

Now to the dinner. Two of us had the seafood fettuccine, one had steak and lobster and one had the portobello mushroom fettuccine. Two of us had salads, one had a bowl of soup and we all had one appetizer of crispy calimare and one bottle of red wine with dinner. The portions were more than enough. The food was excellent.

The service was excellent too. Our food server was at our table several time filling our water glasses and asking if we needed anything.

So, one dessert and a glass of dessert wine later we get our bill. Surprise!!! The bill was $300 bills. None in the group are cheap, but we thought it was a bit pricey. Because of that and being on vacation, we will not eat there again even when we come back next and there will be a next time as we own a timeshare at the Marriott there.

Overall impression of Cafe Portofino is it is an excellent eating establishment.

“Watch out with specials!”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

I had dinner last night, and was offered a seafood pasta dish, a daily special. It was good, but I was shocked when the bill came: This dish alone was $36.-!
Even in Hawaii, this seems exorbitant. Make sure you ask the price before ordering a special that is not on the menu!

“Oh my, fantistico!!!”

This was by far the best Italian meal I can recall and my husband and I have been to many fine Italian restaurants throughout the United States. The sauces were fabulous as and we loved the harp, lighting and beachfront.

“Average Food with Above Average Staff”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

We have been coming to the Marriott Resort for 16 years as owners and have eaten at the various restaurants within walking distance many times. We brought some guests and they asked for Italian so we went the Cafe. It is always quieter that Duke's next store which I like. The harp player is first rate. The waiter Patrick was welcoming and very helpful describing the various fish specials. Service was above average.

I think the owner/manager needs rethink the approach. The food is average. Veal, my favorite food was burnt and the linguini cold. However, our friends loved their fish. The view is terrific and the wine selection was good. I think we are paying for the whole deal with view and great food in addition to nice staff. It just feels like something is wrong.
