From Rice St, turn down Kress (Salvation Army store on corner). Halfway down is the Barbecue Inn on the left; at the end is Hamura's; follow the street around and it becomes Hardy St. At the light, across on the left is Garden Island Barbecue and Chinese Restaurant. Three excellent places to eat, all close together! These are local favorites, all known for their good food, reasonable prices, generous portions, and service.

Barbecue Inn closes for lunch at 1:30, so plan ahead. A mix of local dishes, salads, very good Katsu Donburi (my favorite), and daily specials. Booths on the left; tables on the right; take your pick. Savvy tourists know this place for its good food and quiet dining. If it's flash you want, try the big hotels. For a nice Kauai experience, try these three.

Located on a one-wayside street off Lihue's Rice Street, you need a map or GPS to find this small restaurant. But it is worth the trouble!
We ordered a "Panko Mahimahi" and got a delicious piece of fish in a panko crumb crust. The bed of brown rice was also delicous. A small salad with a tasty dressing was included on the plate. Dessert comes with the entre, in our case Macademia nut cream pie, too sweet and gooey for some folks but great eating for this writer

Love this place even if we are not locals we were treated very nice and the food is great and the price is right. Everyone complains that going to Hawaii is "too expensive" then shoo the naysayers and find these little out of the way places with great food and great prices. We had the tempera shrimp and vegetables with macaroni salad (really good macaroni salad hand made I am sure). You get it all I believe for $13.95 and get a soup or salad, drink, and a piece of pie for dessert. Yikes that beats many places in the states!

We ordered the Japanese preparations for food and they were frankly average hence the rating. Maybe if we had ordered the BBQ the ratings might have gone up. We did love the local, homey feel the restaurant afforded. Service was nice, local and homey feeling as well. No pretensions at this eatery.

We were staying in the area and wanted somewhere close by for breakfast. Found this place in our guidebook. Was OK, but nothing very special. No real complaints, but nothing to recommend either.
