Over many visits to Kauai in the last decade, we have consistently gone to Fish Express to get fresh fish to cook on the barbecue. They consistently have the largest variety and freshest/highest quality fish on the Island -- you'll almost always be able to get very fresh ahi and mahi mahi. When conditions are good (i.e., not too windy), they also get the pick of the catch from local fisherman as well (opakapaka or pink snapper is a great treat when they have it). They also have a good variety of pokes and specially prepared sashimi block ahi.

In addition to the fresh fish they sell, they have takeout lunch service -- mostly fresh fish options -- that is consistently outstanding.

Their location is not on the main traffic flow (across from Walmarts in Lihue) -- and they could use a marketing consultant to come up with a better name -- but it is definitely worth going to for the best fish on the Island.

I had the Fresh Fish Plate, Wok seared with Thai curry. This was truly delightful. The potato salad was not made with potatoes though, instead it was pasta. Great service but no where to sit and eat, take out only. The fish is very tasteful and fresh but not a lot of variety.

We got the kalua pork plate (which was awesome) and lau lau pork plate (pork slow-cooked in taro leaves - also awesome). You don't go for the atmosphere - it's more of a takeaway deli type set up but it is hugely popular and really good.

This is a carry out only place so keep in mind that you have to take it back to your room or find a beach or park to sit it.( Oh darn) We heard about this place and decided to try it for lunch.one day. It Is located right in Lihue on one of the main roads. Parking is bit tight and you can exit by the back of the building.....but don't let that discourage you from going here. This is a combination deli, fish market, and take out restaurant. They have a number of poke dishes along with several cooked fish combinations and a group of sandwich's. My wife and I opted for one of the fish combos and decided it was enough so we could split it and have plenty to eat. We had the Ahi with wasabi dressing and it comes with some salad greens and rice. We also decided to add a 1/4 pound of their cucumber salad to the mix. Everything we ate was so fresh and flavorful! The fish had a great flavor with the wasabi sauce not too strong but still very tasty. The cucumber salad was fresh and light and the rice not overcooked as many take out places seem to do. Total cost of the lunch with the extra side was $12 and as it was enough for both us. It was a very affordable and delicious lunch for about $6 bucks each....not bad on Kauai.
It is worth a stop on you days of exploring the island....and the Kalapacki Beach is just 5 minutes away.

The poke was so good and everything else too. A local recommended it and they were so right. The food was fresh and delicious. I just wish I could have tried everything there.
