The doors off helicopter ride was the highlight of our trip (June 2012)! We enjoyed every aspect of flying with Mauna Loa. From the friendly staff, to the great tips about local eats, to the private tour, to the AMAZING views, everything was top notch.

What we liked about seeing Kauai by air:
- Some things on the island can generally only be seen by air (e.g., many waterfalls, inside some of the canyons along the Na Pali coast, inside the "crater" of Mt. Waialeale, etc. ).
- This was my first helicopter trip (my husband's 2nd), and it was amazing! Doors off was definitely a great way to go. Loved the air, the view, the feeling, the everything.
- Seeing the island by air is a great way to become more familiar with the geography of the island.

What we liked about Mauna Loa in particular:
- I'm a fairly small individual (5'1"), so I'm sure I'd have gotten stuck in a middle seat had we gone with a company that combines groups. For the kind of money that a helicopter tour costs, I wanted to make sure I'd get a great seat. Mauna Loa does not combine groups, and every seat truly is window seat.
- As we were waiting for the shuttle to bring us back to the office (we parked at the office and were shuttled to the airport), we saw the pilot doing the safety checks on the helicopter and thoroughly cleaning the headsets. While this was all after our flight, it made us glad of our decision to go with Mauna Loa.

It is unlikely we will take another helicopter tour anytime soon due to the cost, but if this is your first trip and it's within your budget I highly recommend taking a helicopter tour, and Mauna Loa is a great one to book.

It's rare that you see an activity or hotel with over 300 5 star ratings and about 3 4 star ratings... but it makes sense. This was an absolutely amazing experience. Doors off, no windows is absolutely the way to go for the full sensory experience. A knowledgeable and friendly pilot (Pete, in our case) plays relaxing island tunes over the headsets and keeps you posted as to what you're seeing or when to expect bumps/wind.

Just awesome. Book it.

Remember to plan your helicopter ride early in your stay, the weather on Kauai is very unpredictable, and it won’t match up with a highly structured vacation itinerary. One reason that we were impressed with Moana Loa was there great communication with us after weather caused cancellation of our reservation. We got a perfect day, Waialeale crater was clear, Kalalau was cloudy when we crested the ridge but cleared very quickly. Remember to keep your camera in close or lean forward occasionally to keep your lens from fogging.
This was not our first helicopter ride in Hawaii, but it was most certainly the best.

Don't hesitate to do the doors off! The flight was amazing, great pilot too! The only scary part is the turbulence, but the pilot did a great job minimizing it. The photos I got we're really amazing"

The highlight of our trip! We booked early in our stay, which was good because a storm had moved in and we were unable to fly at our originally booked time slot. The staff was wonderful, and provided us with a next day flight instead. We had Pete as our excellent pilot. The tour itself was incredible! Kauai is such a beautiful island and there is so much of it you can't see by car or foot. I recommend the doors off option. It's a little breezy, but I found it refreshing! The music that was playing in our head sets was a nice touch. Expect to be amazed at the sheer beauty of the island!
