“Nice”

This was the third island that we visited. Unlike the Marriott on Maui we were allowed to check in before 3 pm. And our room was clean and comfortable. All of the people in the hotel were very nice. Unfortunately we were there for only 3 nights and it rained most of the time that we were there. It made the lagoon muddy. The third day it was sunny and the lagoon brightened up. We went to IAO Needle, a rain forest, nice. And we went to the canyon, can't remember the name. It was all fogged in, but we bought a post card and if the sun was shining it would have been spectacular.
Hotel was near airport, but we never were bothered by the planes. If you like a hotel with not much around the immediate area this is the place for you. But if you like more hotels around go to the other Marriott on the island. We were limited to restaurants. JJ's restaurant just offsite was great upstairs, we walked. But this was the only place that you can walk to away from the hotel. This was our only complaint. Otherwise this was a very nice and friendly place to be.

We stayed here for 3 nights in Jan and enjoyed our 10th floor view. At night it still looked good with all the tiki torches and pool lit up. It was a bit hard to find the lobby and they currently have some of the parking and the entrance blocked off. Dukes was OK, great view from the corner table and good service. We ended up at one of the buffets one evening, other than tons of food, there wasn't anything spectacular.
Not having been to Kauai before can't recommend over anywhere else but it was nice and service was good.

I stayed at this resort in early January (2005) and was very impressed with both the hotel and the staff (I've traveled alot and am not easily impressed). I'm very surprised by the negative reviews I've seen here. Our hotel room was nice. The bathroom was mostly marble and very large. The balcony was wonderful to sit on in the evenings and listen to the live music in the lounge below as well as the crashing waves on the beach that is mere steps beyond the pool. We had a wonderful view of the pool and a decent view of the ocean beyond. I would suggest that, for best views, you book a room on the 7th floor or above (buildings have 9 floors, I believe). The pool, by the way, is just beautiful. People had told me that before I went. I said I wasn't going all the way to Hawaii just to lay by the pool but quickly changed my mind upon seeing it! The common areas are beautiful...koi ponds, vegetation, little nooks to slip into to just sit and enjoy the beauty and great weather. The food was decent (not outstanding) and what you'd expect from a resort/hotel. We tended to go out for meals and visit local spots and recommended restaurants. There was an abundance of activities available at the hotel - they slip a newsletter under your door nightly that shows the upcoming activities for that day. The staff was very friendly and pleasant. One caution: if you're looking for nightlife there isn't any beyond visiting the lounge/pool area and/or sushi bar for drinks, conversation, and relaxation. In general this island is very laid back and a haven for the outdoor enthusiast. It doesn't cater to the partier. If you're looking for that, go to one of the other islands. I was satisfied with the limited nightlife as that wasn't what I was in Hawaii for. The hotel's location on the island (east side) is perfect - much sunshine and moderate temperatures. I would highly recommend this resort and look forward to visiting it again myself.

Went there on a friends recommendation - they know that we typically stay at the Four Seasons on the Big Island, Hapuna on the Big Island and the Ritz on Maui. They thought we'd like this place - oh, how they were wrong.

First night view = laoding dock with a broken chair sitting on it alongside a big drum of medical waste. No balcony - a window that would not open. This was not the room we paid for but we were given some crap about being oversold.

They finally moved us the following day after repeatedly telling them how disgusted we were with the present accomodations. The next room had a better view (ocean and pool) - it was the one we paid for. But the accommodations were still pretty poor for a supposed luxury hotel. Luxury hotels are supposed to have things like frette linens and nice fabrics, nice bathrooms, tasteful decor, etc.... -- the Kauai Marriott had none of it. Piss poor all around with thin walls to boot.

Pool area = nothing but kids yelling and screaming.

Food = simply atrocious. Duke's is a joke. If this is what you call fine dining then you've never been to a fine restaurant (Michelin starred or otherwise). The fish was horrendous and we could find better just about anywhere on the island.

Overall = the entire resort needs a good cleaning and a fresh paint job. There are areas which still have not been revived from the hurricane which hit 10 or so years ago - those areas now look like something out of a Faulkner novel (buidlings overgrown by vines and moss). Oh yeah, the entry to this hotel is so utterly laughable -- such a god awful design - take your bags down three floors via an escalator (thought I was at a mall), with no help from the bell desk, then walk a bit until you hit the lobby on the left.

We stayed at the Marriott the week starting January 3rd. Excessive rains the prior week had created flooding, sewer spills and sinkholes at the Marriott, severely lowering our 20th anniversary expectations! However, the weather was perfect all week we were there, the Marriott sinkholes became a great topic of conversation and the perfect beaches of Poipu were just 20 minutes away! As for the Marriott, the room and furnishings were ample and very attractive (contrary to some prior views). The hotel food was good, but next door Duke's was fabulous at a reasonable price (try the salad bar, free with meals, and the Hula dessert!), Around the island, we had fantastic romantic meals at Tide Pools at the Poipu Hyatt and the Bali Hai in Hanalei. The Marriott should heat the pool more (it's about 74 degrees) and the architecture is a bit "over-the-top", but the hotel has first class beauty, service and amenities, and the centralized location is super! On the island, don't miss the Grand Canyon and Hanalei Bay. We also enjoyed the Wailua Falls kayak/hiking expedition-but lots of mud involved!

A hotel in Kauai with no balcony and windows that do not open? Yes, this is true and our room was claustrophobic..If you plan on staying at the resort and not renting a car, you will be disappointed, as there are marginal activities at the hotel. I was so unimpressed with this resort. Thankfully, Hawaii's natural beauty makes up for this unpleasant hotel.

Have stayed at many first class resorts including JW Marriott, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton, and this resort rivals all. Older resort, but nonetheless gorgeous. Quality everywhere. Hospitality of staff unrivaled. Impeccable landscaping. 4 quality restaurants including awesome sushi bar! Spa is very good, small, but services are wonderful - hair, skin, nails. Great shopping on site. Taxi to Poipui just $25. Marriott Waiohi Poipui awesome too. Don't miss Beach House for sunset dinner, and above all, do not miss helicopter tour - spend $$ and go for 90 min with Jack Harter tours from Marriott. Rent car for day to go to Princeville Resort - stunning! LOVED MARRIOTT KAUAI!
