“pleasant stay”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 6 nights and overall enjoyed the resort.

In general the resort was well-manicured, clean, and pretty. The pool area was really huge and had several hot tubs which was quite enjoyable. The beach was also pretty and peaceful, and we enjoyed stealing pockets of sun out there on one particularly rainy day.

Our room was large, clean, and nice. The bed was really comfortable.
I was, however, disappointed that our "pool-view" room was mostly a view of a roof and only a tiny slither of the pool area. We had also requested a high floor and a room away from the elevators, and wound up fairly low and in a room closest to the elevators. The maid service was also inconsistent, and we were never sure what to expect when we returned-- some days our room was very thoroughly tidied with even our shoes lined up against the wall, while other days they only really took the time to make our bed and forgot to replenish the shampoo (for example). That said, it was always clean.

The restaurants at the resort were fairly good, especially considering the food on Kauai in general is pretty sub-par. We had the buffet breakfast at Kukui's a couple times and found it plentiful and tasty(~25/pp). It was slightly varied on both days which we appreciated. We also tried the Friday Prime Rib/King Crab Leg dinner buffet (~50/pp), which was surprisingly good! We also tried Kalapaki Grill which was a decent meal. Duke's was also one of the better restaurants that we tried on the island (make a reservation, it gets crowded). The prices were on the high side, as can be expected at a resort. We normally are all about the local food, but after trying a few places and being incredibly disappointed we defaulted to the Marriott options.

The staff were all super friendly and talkative.

Parking was slightly tricky in the evenings but we were always able to find a spot, even if it wasn't always closest to our side of our resort.

The hotel is nice unless your ocean view overlooks the top of a building as our did. The pool is very pretty but I don't go all the way to Kauai to not be able to go into the ocean. There is a river that dumps it's silt right there on the side of the hotel which makes the water so muddy that you can't see your feet. I would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Make sure that your ocean view does not overlook the top of a building.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at this resort. We initially had an ocean view room but were offered an upgrade at a discounted rate for a suite for our honeymoon so we took it. I'm so glad we did because the views were incredible. We were on the 22nd floor of the Ha'pu Tower, room 2225 and had 2 separate giant balconies since it is a corner unit. One was the whole length of the bedroom and dining area overlooking Kalapaki Bay. When you woke up in the morning you woke up to a view of the ocean. The other balcony faced the beautiful pool. There was a bottle of champagne waiting for us when we got in, that was super nice! The only complaints about the room is the couch is very old and sunken in, the furniture needs to be replaced and the housekeeping was not great. Other than that I'd highly recommend that room.

The pool was fantastic. One of the jacuzzi's was out of order but since there were 4 others it didn't matter much. I think it was spring break time because there were a ton of kids, not terribly great when you're on your honeymoon. I'd say this resort is definitely more family oriented. I had wished the drink/food service around the pool was more frequent, I only saw them come around once on our last day. Also we noticed people would save chairs early in the morning and then not come to use them till later in the day. Annoying.

The grounds at the hotel were beautiful, very well maintained. We ventured up to check out the tennis courts and found a sad looking defunct tennis court area, looked like a deserted country club. It's a shame cause it's a lot of unused land. We were thinking it'd be nice if the resort had games, like lawn games, (croquet, bocce, ping pong, etc.) and that would be a great area to have it.

A couple of tips:

- There is an ABC store right around the corner, go there to get wine/beer, etc, much much cheaper than buying it at the hotel. 1 beer and a glass of wine at the hotel cost as much as a case of beer and a bottle of wine at the store.

- Don't eat at the Prime Rib/ King crab leg buffet dinner that is on Friday evenings at Kukui's. It was way over priced and the food was terrible. The crab legs were like rubber, you couldn't even break them and the prime rib was blah.

- The breakfast buffet at Kukui's however was amazing. We ate there everyday and we had a Marriott Vacation Club card so we got 20% each time. Totally worth every penny.

Overall, the service at the resort was wonderful, all of the staff were very friendly, the room was wonderful and so was the pool. I'd recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Choose a higher floor room for a better view. Don't get a garden view room. They are tucked away...

This hotel provided an average if not mediocre service consistently thru out our 4 days stay, from the room service to the pool and restaurant service. It feels like a mass tourism and the staff seems to be overworked. We checked in our room and it was dirty with beds unmade and bathroom was used, we called the reception to sent the housekeeping as no other rooms were available, we came back from the pool an hour later and the beds were made but not the bathroom, so we called the again, we left out for dinner so they could clean we came back at 10 pm and the bathroom was still not clean, I could believe, I was shocked. We didn't shower or used the bathroom and we had an 8 year old child who was exhausted…. I was furious, I called the housekeeping and they said bathroom was cleaned, I told them to send a manager, they only send a man to clean, and shockingly, he only cleaned the toilet and left, the sink and bathtub was dirty, dirty towels and cosmetics were left from the previous people that stayed……
At the restaurant the service was very slow and the staff were running around like drunk chickens, really bad service. At the pool, bad news again, there is no service until 11 am, you can't even have a drink, plus they close at 5. On top of that they do not provide any umbrellas, so no shade to sit under, unless you follow the sun shade under a palm tree, you are required to pay $40 for a lousy umbrella for 2 people which should be free, they even call it a cabana!! Ah, and even if you pay the $40 it is only until 5 pm, but since only 2 people can use, you are expected to rent two for $80 if you have a family….
When you arrive at the hotel you are welcomed with another $30 a day fee for parking etc…...

We stayed here for the first part of our honeymoon. The hotel made us feel special from the get go and the resort was very nice. The location is great for seeing the whole island. You are really in the center of everything there and not a far drive from anything. The only drawback is the water is not the beautiful aqua clear color you see elsewhere on the island so you can't really snorkel around there. It also rained a few times here and was a bit chilly this time of year. Thankfully though sunnier parts of the island were only a short drive away. It only took an hour to drive up to Tunnels beach which was by far our favorite spot on the island.

We had reservations about staying at the Marriott Kauai beach club based on several negative comments on TripAdvisor however we were very pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Marriott sells time share units and we got a one bedroom “Villa” unit from an Interval International exchange.

The building was originally a 1960 style hotel that has been converted to time share villas. There are some limitations as a result. Our “villa” consisted of a nice bedroom with ensuite bathroom and balcony connected to a living area that had a galley kitchen and wall bed that doubled as a settee. The galley kitchen only had a microwave and bar size refrigerator, and dishwasher but no stovetop or oven.

There were 3 gas BBQs on the lawn in front of our block for guests to use. This made up for the lack of in suite stove and oven so that we were able to make 3 tasty dinners during our stay.

Overall the space was adequate for a couple but would have been very cramped for a family of 4. On the positive side we had 2 full bathrooms, 2 bar fridges and 2 locking safes to store valuables.

The hotel grounds were immaculate with with beautiful gardens that were manicured. The pool was large, attractive and inviting. The public areas of the hotel were well appointed and equal to other Marriott's that we have stayed at. The concierge desk impressed as they followed up our tour booking the day after to ensure that the excursion was satisfactory and problem free. Overall the staff were efficient, friendly and helpful.

there is a large parking lot 3 minute walk from the front entrance at the average for Hawaii of $15 per day, complimentary if you have Marriott Silver or Elite status. Valet parking also available for an extra charge.

The beach is wide and clean. There is some wave action but much less than we observed at neighbouring eras that were not protected by the natural bay. The the towers at the resort have nice views of the beach above the 5th floor EXCEPT the Ha’upu Tower. This tower is aligned perpendicular to the beach and features views of the pool with only a glimpse of the beach.

We dis not eat at the resort restaurants but the Duke’s restaurant on site is one of the nicer units in this popular Hawaiian chain with indoor waterfall and good food at a reasonable price.

One disturbing negative was the stained mattress cover that we discovered on the bed. This was changed promptly once we complained but it should never have been put on the bed in a high class establishment like a Marriott.

We visited the highly rated Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club in Poipu as we had considered staying there. The units were custom built villas so more comfortable, but most did not have a beach view and although the beach was more scenic the water was rougher.

Overall not vastly superior to the Kauai Beach Club. We spent our last night at the Kauai Beach Club but nothing here is up up to the standard of the Marriott, see my full review on T/A.

Room Tip: For the best beach views stay on the 8th floor above - higher than the coconut tree fronds. Wai’Ale...

Stayed in vacation club tower on ground floor. New renovation -- very nicely appointed. Great location for beach and pool access. Doesn't have full kitchen but not a deterrent for us. Dukes canoe club on property has excellent food. Five minutes from airport and rental car locations. Good beach. Would return again.
