The entire resort is amazing with every amenity imaginable, and the beauty is everywhere from the décor to the landscape. We arrived before check in and went straight to the private beach, then went to one of many restaurants. This is truly the best place to stay in Kauai. I live in Vegas so the restaurants rate as average to me, but they did use island favorites and I am still trying to duplicate the crème brule oatmeal dish! We actually traveled in 2011

This hotel is incredible. The grounds are absolutely stunning. There is an amazing koi pond, marble statues, picteresque mountains, massive pool. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. The food on premise was exceptional and reasonably priced. Everything was absolutely perfect. Would definitely stay at again.

The corned beef hash at kakuis was the best breakfast I've had in my entire life.

Negatives
The beach is part of this amazing bay, but it is not a great snorkleing beach. You need to take a short car ride to get to the really great beaches. The spa is nothing special, but has all of the things that you would expect.

I stayed here with my husband for our honeymoon. The hotel itself is gorgeous and the staff is wonderful. We were even given a bottle of champagne which we enjoyed. We had a room that partially overlooked the water and was close to the pool. They have great food and drinks on premise but it's also a very short distance to other restaurants. I highly suggest you go to Dukes!!

According to TripAdvisor thumbs-ups, this Marriott is next to the bottom of the 9 chain hotels on the island of Kauia.TripAdvisor lists it as “#2 of 9 in Lihue,” which is a sad comment on the hospitality industry in Lihue!

Of the 1,573 persons who had reviewed this property at the time of this review, more than every 5th reviewer (354 of 1573), had rated it as only average or as worse than average!

How could this place, a Marriott, be so bad? Here’s our experience…

The lobby is beautiful and the staff is friendly. But we noticed upon exiting the elevator for our 9th-floor room that all of the rooms had metal doors. It looked like the original hallway from a cheap motel property that Marriott had perhaps bought and turned into a “resort.” The room was clean but the bathroom was tiny – so tiny, in fact, I had to move forward, straddling the toilet, to close the door behind me. (My wife chose stepping into the bathtub as a means for getting out of the way of the door in order to close it. You could use either technique.)

At breakfast the next morning at one of the properties restaurants, we received good food with excellent service, but that was our only good restaurant experience here. At poolside lunch we were served something they called a “Caesar salad” but it had iceberg lettuce and what might have been cheap, bottled dressing. At dinner that evening, at their vaunted all-you-can-eat prime rib and crab dinner, the prime rib was beautiful to look at but was tough and tasteless, as if it had been cooked too fast.

A special word must be added about our waiter, Carlton. (Yes, I’m getting personal here, but this guy has to be called out.) We were seated for dinner and after a long wait began looking around to see if our waiter was anywhere in site. The hostess noticed us appearing to be lost, came to our table and asked if we had been waited on yet. When we said we had not, she seemed frustrated. Carlton eventually showed up. I ordered the prime rib/crab and my wife ordered nachos. Her nachos were soggy and had a sauce on them that seemed to have come from a Thousand Islands bottle. After her second bite, she felt nauseous and we looked for Carlton to return the nachos. He was nowhere to be found. The busboy removed our nachos and went to get Carlton. My wife watched as the busboy found Carlton on the other side of the room and told him we needed some attention. Carlton said something abrupt and walked the other direction. In a couple of minutes, the busboy asked us if Carlton had been here yet. We said “no” and the busboy seemed frustrated but nothing seemed to help. Eventually, we had been at this on-property restaurant for more than an hour. In that time, we mostly sat and waited. My wife had had two bites of nachos and I had struggled through a tasteless piece of tough prime rib. (The busboy, however, was excellent and we were well watered!) We left, went to the front desk, told them our problem and returned to our room.

After this misery, my wife, still hungry, wanted a shower. She went into the tiny bathroom, turned the shower handle and with the water now running, the handle fell off in her hand. We called the front desk, reported the problem and went to the lobby to have a glass of water and wait for the repair.

The next morning, we checked out – two days ahead of our planned stay. On our invoice, we noticed that a daily “resort fee” had been added that was $5 higher than had been advertised. (Why does a property need a “resort fee” anyway – raise your room rates honestly.) We were too exasperated to object, at that point. We just wanted out.

If you stay here, set your standards low – management has (You may notice in other TripAdvisor reviews for this property, a manager has responded, “Call me if you’d like to discuss…”- the kind of passive management that allows low standards to persist. In other hotels, a guest might expect a bit more initiative from a manager to intervene in such disasters. We had, after all, reported our problems with Carlton’s lack of service, the low quality food and had also called the front desk to report the eruption of the plumbing.) – and if the hostess at your restaurant says, “Carlton is your waiter and he’ll be right with you,” get out your hourglass and time him.

This is basically a high-rise trailer park with a Marriott logo on it. Why Marriott allows this is curious. There are 7 other chain hotels on the island of Kauia with higher ratings, and for good reason.

The service, The room, THE FOOD!!! The hotel is very big, but you don't notice the people in there, everything is very organized and well done.
The employees are very nice, smile all the time and they are very efficient.
I recomend this place for couples, family or group of friends.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view, it is so beautiful any time of the day.

My wife and I are checking out today and wish we could stay another week (or two). What a beautiful place! We are Marriott Vacation Club owners in Aruba and have been to many MVC locations over the years. This is the best we have been to yet!! The rooms are very well appointed and clean. The scenery, gardens and ponds on the resort are like eye candy and you can't get enough of it. The staff are all very friendly and always greeted us with a smile and an aloha. The location of the resort is excellent for day trips around the island. Lihue has tons of great restaurants and shops and, of course, Costco is only a few miles away. Costco is the best place to shop for food and other items and the also have a gas station with the cheapest prices on the island.

We first came to Kauai twenty-five years ago and loved it then. It is truly a Hawaiian Paradise and one that we hope to come back to again, and again! If you get a chance to come here you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Higher floors have a fabulous view of the Kalapaki Beach and Nawiliwili harbor. The best views are f...

My husband and I have been to this hotel with out the kids and had a fabulous time. But, this time brought them along. We had a great time. They LOVED the enormous pool and being able to run right out to the beach, was another plus. Lihue town is centrally located on the island so it is easy to get to the North and South shores. There had been more storms than usual and Kalapaki Bay was browner than its normal blue, but that did not seem to bother anyone. We took a 30 minute drive to Poipou Beach on the North side for crystal clear water and amazing snorkeling.
Don't forget to eat at Duke's on the bay attached to the resort. BEST fish on the island. We ate there with the kids numerous times, not only because it was convenient but because we love the food. And don't forget the Hula Pie for dessert!

Room Tip: The view of the pool is great and you can still hear the ocean waves breaking on the beach. BUT if...
