“Good price, nice extras”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2005

We stayed 4 nights in a second floor room with a/c. The price was great, the location perfect and the extras provided by the hotel (beach mats/chairs, coolers, snorkelin gear, etc) terrific. We stayed in February, and I would say that you definitely want a/c for maximum comfort. We did not find the tile floors to be exceedingly warm as did a previous reviewer. The room was very large and had a queen bed and two twin beds (we put them together for a double bed). It also had a dining table and chairs, a spacious counter area with sink, coffee pot (and Kona coffee!), microwave and refrigerator. It was definitely large enough for the four of us and would be ideal for parents with two children. The room was slightly dated, but very clean.

The location is great for exploring the island. Nearby, there is a shopping center and Kalapaki Beach. There is also a park on the ocean with swings and picnic tables with grills. We ended up cooking dinner in the park a couple of nights which saved a lot of money and tasted terrific!

The gear provide by the hotel was fantastic--they even loaned us a flashlight!

The staff was friendly, the location perfect and the price affordable. What more can you ask!?!

Based on the amenities, this place deserves an above average rating, but the room experience is such a detraction I thought it fair to give an average rating.

The good news: There are mini-fridges, microwaves and coffee pots. They provide, free of charge, coolers, beach mats/gear and a library of decent guidebooks. The front desk staff were (mostly) pleasant and (mostly) helpful. The owners helped us with our bags when we moved to the third floor (no elevator) the second night we stayed there. The location is terrific - close to the airport but not too noisy (they are not in the flight path). A great central location from which to explore both sides of the island. A decent beach and several good places to eat within walking distance. Room size is fair, both that we stayed in were clean.

The bad news: the hot water pipes run under the tile floors and keep the rooms very warm (nice in Vermont during the winter - suffocating for Kauai even when it is cool in October which it was when we stayed there). They charge an extra $20.00 for rooms with a/c (rooms start at $85 - about 20% overpriced in my opinion but we did not book early - maybe you can get a discount by securing your room before you arrive). None of the ground floor units have a/c and they need them the most due to the lack of cross-ventilation. The front desk staff did not volunteer this info. Had they done so, we would have opted for another room. The bathroom in unit #2 (ground floor) was a little hmm, seedy-feeling, due to the old crusty tile/grout, peeling paint and peculiar layout. Also stayed in unit #19 on the third floor. Larger, more updated, still had warm floors, some peeling paint and worn, mis-matched furnishings.

We stayed at the Garden Island Inn for 8 days in February 2002. We had a 1-bedroom suite with private balconies on two sides. It was not elaborate but very comfortable. The people that work there were very helpful. They provided services for free that other hotels would charge extra for such as loaning beach towels, coolers, and snorkeling gear.

The hotel is across the street from Kalapaki Beach, the same beach used by guests of the Marriott Resort. We paid less than half the price of a basic ocean view room at the Marriott and had a lot more room and much better service.

We will go back to the Garden Island Inn and will recommend it to our friends.

We are so glad we found this motel. Located two minutes by flip-flops from Kalapaki beach near the Lihue Marriott, it's a gem. Our first floor room was smallish but had a double bed and two single beds (one night). Our second story room had a more open feeling and a lovely view off the narrow lanai of the ocean and the beach. The location and the warm and friendly staff complement the affordable pricing structure and make this a motel I happily recommend to anyone considering Kauai who doesn't have the hundreds required to stay at the luxury places. One of the many nice touches is the beach and snorkling equipment you can just check out - no need to rent. If we return to Kauai, we'll definitely stay here again.

This is a nice little place. The rooms are neat and clean, and it is obvious that the management cares about the property. Is is Affordable? Yes. Luxurious, no. This is a good place to call home-base if you want to set out on your own Hawaiian experience. You will come 'home' to a comfortable bed, a clean room, a nice balcony with a view, and room to kick back. If you want to be pampered and catered to, go elsewhere! The staff is friendly and helpful (thank you, Rachael!) We will surely be back!

We stayed at the Garden Inn as a "last minute" when we were on Kauai for a wedding, in July, and wanted to extend our time on this beautiful island. The place we were at, Kuhio Shores (no A/C), did not have room when our stay was up (Don't stay there in the summer-you'll be sorry!). The first room at the Garden Inn, downstairs, was pretty awful. Old, worn-out, etc. Just plain BAD. We got an "upgrade" to an upstairs room that was larger, a little nicer looking, and had AC! (It was humid!) But, we found evidence of roaches. So, unless your desparate for AC and want a really low price, $75.00, stay there; otherwise, find something else.
