This is a definite funky hotel on the island of Kauai. Our room had a waterfall just outside the bathroom window, the artwork was funky, and all the basics were there (coffeepot, small fridge, microwave, coffee in the office with great morning buns). It is not the "Hilton", but we thought it was a "way cool" beginning to our Kauai vacation. Centrally located to shopping and good eats. The Marriott is just across the road and the beach there is walkable from this property. It was also close to a GREAT eatery: The Feral Pig. We highly recommend this hotel for the open-minded traveler.

Room Tip: There was a bit of traffic noise because this is located on the main thoroughfare, but we found that running the fan took care of that.

Thank you so much for your comments, we are pleased to hear your thoughts. We looked up the word 'Kitsch" in the Urban Dictionary, one of the definition is:
"Sentimentally charming, tacky and fun all rolled up in one. One catch with kitsch is that you're never quite sure if it's supposed to be serious or not. It's that uncertainty that is amusing." All of our colorful paintings in all our rooms are original and were painted in our Hotel Gardens over a period of 3 years. They are all depicting different Kauai North Shore and beach scenes . Thank you so very much for recommending us. Mahalo, Steve and Lis Layne

Our travel plans changed and we booked one night’s stay on the recommendation of a very helpful cab driver. We were pleasantly surprised. Joyce on the front desk was extremely helpful and accommodating, helping with luggage, transportation and questions about the area. The property, hotel and room was our kind of place with decorations, furnishings and colorful paint schemes making everywhere you look interesting. Lots of room, very comfortable bed, fridge, microwave and coffee in the room. Coffee, pastries and snack bars at the front desk all day. Cannot beat the location to the airport and the price is great. Walk to a variety of great restaurants, shops and across the street to the Kalapaki Beach!

My husband and I spent 5 days at the Garden Island Inn. The staff was freindly and knowledgeable. The grounds were beautiful and our room clean with a nice balcony. The inn is within walking distance of two small malls and a beach. The only thing was the room was a bit small lacking enough storage of our things. Next time, we would see about reserving a larger room. It was a very enjoyable 5 days.

We stayed only two nights -- arriving in Lihue and leaving Lihue -- but the room was fine. A bit small, but the a/c was nice. The gardens are outstanding, though. The koi fish pond in the lobby is a nice touch too!

Thank you for staying with us. Your praise of our gardens means a lot the the entire staff at GII, from our wonderful housekeepers who trim daily flowers for all the rooms, the husband and wife gardeners with me for 12 years, and the great front office staff who hand waters potted plants and are always looking for ways to beautify . Our Koi flourish in our 3 ponds, and some are at least 25 years old. Chlidren and parents enjoy feeding our Koi and we are proud of their tranquil and royal beauty. Look foward to showing you around on your return. Aloha, Steve and Lis

My husband and I just returned home after a two week stay on Kauai and the entire duration at the Garden Island Inn. We enjoyed our room , which was clean and cozy with a few little perks , such as the fridge and microwave. We should have gotten a condo or suite with a full size fridge and stove and I'm not even sure if the Garden Island Inn has any suites that have that. If they did, I would surely be back in this exact location. In fact, that would be my only complaint. We had rain for the first week, so larger accomodations would be nice. We had a room with a King sized bed and a small table and chairs (which quickly got loaded up with our belongings ) and a small patio overlooking their gardens. The road noise was a bit to get used to but it never bothered our sleep at all. The staff is more than helpful. We were able to take care of some business loose ends from home by having access to their fax machine. That meant a lot to us as we would have been worried the entire visit about business details. Patrick was also very friendly and helpful to us. When our DVD player wasn't working one night, a staff member went out and purchased another DVD for our room within the hour. The cleaning staff always had a smile and a wave with well wishes every morning on our daily departures. We were also able to secure a small apartment room , at the last minute, for our final day , as check out was 11 am and our flight wasn't until late evening. I should have booked an extra day because of our late departure time but I didn't even give it a thought until departure time was upon us. We really appreciated the ability to still go to the beach , shower and rest before our return flight home. The location is great. As driving is just a part of seeing Kauai, The Garden Island Inn is a great starting point. We would definitely be back ....even if it's for a short stay! I will also be checking out what there larger suites are like for further extensive stays!

Dear Ldlynch, Thank you so much for your report on your stay with us. We do have larger rooms and even 2 condominium units, that have 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, full kitchen, dining table, living room, and deck. Guests who stay as you did multiple nights or weeks enjoy the extra space even if they are not needing the extra bedding. Our daughter husband and 2 kids 1 & 3, stayed in room 20 for 2 weeks. That room has a larger cooking & table area and 4 beds. The hotel is unique as the room layout, size and bedding varies. The great location, staff, free amenities, happily is consistant for all! We will pass the compliments on to Patrick, housekeepers and the front desk staff. Thanks for those acknowledgement. Look forward to your return. Lisabeth & Steve Layne
