“Great location, good alternative to pricey resorts”
Reviewed June 9, 2014 for a stay in April 2014

The best thing about the unit is the location -- the huge balcony overlooking the pool and beautiful ocean views, is exceptional! The roar and crash of the ocean at night, the wind blowing in the trees, and the birds in the morning really make you feel like you are truly in the tropical paradise of Kauai... it was super relaxing and that was exactly as we'd hoped an island vacation would be. (You can also make it quieter easily enough by closing windows, etc. :) ) And the proximity to Poipu beach is really great.

Usefully, the unit was well-equipped for light cooking, and as long as you have a car, it's easy to get to the local markets, etc. Everything's very $$ in Kauai so the full kitchen definitely saved us a lot of money by making it easy to prepare some meals ourselves (and eat leftovers if we wanted to). And you can look at the ocean while you cook, no less!

One of the MOST special things we had happen while we were there was the lunar eclipse -- we ended up using the binoculars that were in the unit (YAY! Nice touch!) to watch, out on the deck, late at night, with a bunch of the other residents/renters. It was fantastic to watch the moon turn reddish, and the clouds going in front, with friendly strangers, on a tropical isle. Very memorable and the deck area in the complex made it possible.

Other pluses:
- Parking was never a problem, we could often get a spot right in front of the unit on the street. It was super convenient!
- Poipu beach is probably the nicest beach on the island for kids / families overall, and it's a 2 minute drive, or a (rather steep) 5ish minute walk.
- The 'neighborhood' is very pretty, and relatively easy to navigate (driving), and felt very safe and generally quiet. There are major resorts more or less 'next door' and you can tell why, the location is amazing.
- The 2nd bedroom was perfect for our 2 kids! They had their own, nice bathroom, and enough room to unpack all their stuff, and two nice big windows. Really nice accommodations for the two of them.
- Neighbors/renters in the other units were largely unseen, but when we did bump into people, they were polite and friendly.
- The guestbook was interesting, entertaining, and useful! We really appreciated all the tips people left there.
- Kauai is pretty small regardless, so there's probably no "terrible" place to stay in terms of getting around, but Poipu seems pretty much ideal if you mostly want 'island vacation'. It is beautiful, super easy to get north, or west: basically it's pretty "centrally located".
- The pool is right there, easy to get to, with a shower and deck chairs etc. It's *really* small, but for my kids it was perfect, especially since they didn't always want to get into the ocean, but always wanted to swim.
- Turtles! We saw sea turtles from the balcony every day, I think. Usually only 1 or 2 at a time, but it was really neat to be able to see them. Definitely a "not in Kansas anymore" feeling to see 4' turtles swimming outside your window every day!
- The 'welcome kit' thing was very helpful, and definitely had a lot of the critical elements (coffee, filters, enough TP & paper towel, etc. etc.) which was really great.

A few minor annoyances, none of which were a big enough deal for us to complain about to management while we were there:
- Biggest gripe: the master bedroom has only (kind of noisy) sliding doors as the "wall" dividing it from the living/diningroom. This definitely provided a lot less privacy than a fully-separate room would, and sliding the doors was difficult to do without waking others at times. I doubt this will get converted to a real wall, but some grease (?) to make the doors more quiet would be helpful.
- The in-unit wifi works "OK" at best, but often, really poorly. I suspect the problem is that since basically EVERY unit has their own wifi now, they end up colliding a lot. Moving it to a different channel, or upgrading to a newer router, would definitely help. Also, the cell reception is pretty poor (on T-Mobile at least), but I think that is partially the nature of Kauai and not the fault of this unit.
- Master bathroom toilet tended to run, but jiggling the handle fixed it :)
- TV in livingroom had some weird issue, sometimes it was all staticky. TV in master was fine. Sometimes it'd work for a minute or two and then go staticy. But we didn't go to Hawaii to watch TV so it wasn't a big deal to us! I do feel a couple of inexpensive flat-panel HDTVs would be a nice (and really, expected, these days) touch.
- Continuing with the SD tube-TV theme, the unit (and actually, whole complex) is a bit dated overall, but that's really just a nitpick; it's perfectly comfortable, and the Hawaii kitsch fits right into the setting. If you got a slick 2014-renovated resort style setting, you'd be paying a *whole* lot more per night!

Management also was overall very responsive with the logistics and correspondence before we arrived. I know it's not the owners but a management company and they have lots of units to deal with. So while you aren't going to get the "have a chat with the owners about why they live in Hawaii" experience, the important stuff was handled totally professionally and promptly.

Ultimately, I think this unit was a BARGAIN compared to the nearby resorts (where most rooms DON'T have nearly as nice a view, or amenities!), and we would definitely consider staying here again if we return to Kauai. It was almost perfect for us, a family with 2 younger kids, giving us lots of flexibility and a superb location, and absolutely providing that "real tropical island vacation" experience!

Glad that you were able to witness the lunar eclipse. The sky here at night is the best for that;)

“Amazing views, swim with turtles, clean and cozy!”

The view makes this place worth it. We watched the waves below us, turtles, dolphins, and even whale sightings in May. Close to everything! Minimal rains the north shore gets frequently.

Mahalo for the review and bringing the cleaning items to our attention. We have taken steps to avoid that in the future.
