“Great proximity to the beach and adequate for a large family”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Our stay at the Hale Pohaku rental was the best accommodations for a large family. My family of 20+ people occupied the entire resort (main house, 3 cottages, and studio). It was great to have everyone so close by. The property was maintained well with a large open courtyard to lounge and gather at night.

Pros: accommodations for large family, large courtyard, pool, proximity to the beach, cleanliness, beach amenities (chairs, sand toys for kids, boggie boards, etc).

Cons: no AC (which is expected), some of the beach chairs were already broken, rooster/chickens/ferrel cats.

You will be woken up by the roosters around 2:30-3:00am. That was the earliest I recall hearing the roosters. With roosters and chickens roaming the grounds, beware of chicken droppings throughout the grounds.

This is a great facility and my large family thoroughly enjoyed staying at this location. We would be happy to stay at this location again.

Room Tip: Other than the main house, the beach house cottage was the biggest of the three cottages.

Our group of 24 just left the beautiful Hale Pohaku ("House of Stone") rental. What a wonderful time we had! Plenty of parking, great outdoor lighting, terrific and well maintained pool. In fact, during our week, Frank, the pool man, stopped by three times to check on things. The owner, Richard, was so attentive. If we called, he came right over. He had some projects to fix damage from the previous guests who broke a door, a window and punched a hole through a door!! It makes you wonder about the kind of people in the world who would trash a lovely place like this. By the second day, all these repairs were complete and we were never inconvenienced.

Yes we missed air conditioning and yes those roosters woke us but we didnt mind. Each morning began with walks on the beach with our coffee in hand, picking up plumeria blossoms from the trees, and breathing the clean air. At night, we turned off all the lights, took the pool loungers on the grass and watched shooting stars. Another night we made s'mores with the kids off the BBQ. The baby kept calling the chickens, "duck!"

Each unit has a new washer and dryer and a full size refrigerator. Boy, were those handy!

We enjoyed beach outings, the Na Pali boat tour, kayaking and ATV riding. The nearby Hyatt spa was enjoyed by some too. And before we left, we took beautiful family portraits using the lush, tropical landscaping as a background. So lovely!

Our Hale Pohaku wedding stay was wonderful. We rented entire property for immediate family and wedding party to stay on July 25th thru July 29th of 2013. We had 26 people staying there. We did need to use two of the available rollaway beds to best serve our needs. A bonus of renting entire property was the availability to use property for our wedding reception at no additional cost. The central courtyard is beautifully landscaped and will accommodate up to a 30' by 20' party tent with dance floor. Wedding ceremony was held a Brennekes Beach which is within walking distance.

We were blessed with amazing weather. Wedding at Brennekes Beach was beautiful and reception at Hale Pohaku was wonderful. If you are looking for an all encompassing venue for a wedding or other event, I would highly recommend.

Note: This is not a 5 star resort. Houses are older, but adequately furnished. Kitchens are all a nice size with most cooking hardware and utensils supplied. Houses are not air conditioned, but close proximity to beach and fairly constant trade winds kept houses comfortable. There are ceiling fans in every room other than bathrooms. In saying this, our stay for same amount of people and reception venue at the Sheraton or the Marriott would have cost more than twice as much!

The houses at Hale Pohaku were fantastic. We had a group of 15 and rented the whole property. It great having our own kitchens, and because we had 5 kitchens to work with, feeding 15 was no problem. The place is only 1 short block from the beach in Poipu, and a park right on the beach. We were there for New Years so were only steps away from the fireworks show. Excellent. There's only one restaurant in easy walking distance, but we did most of our own cooking so it wasn't an issue. There's a small shopping center about 1/2 a mile away, and downtown Koloa was only 5 minutes by car.

For a 50th birthday, two generations family and extended family descended on Hale Pohaku in Poipu for a week long getaway. We rented out all 4 buildings, so the entire compound was ours. The proximity of the buildings gave us enough togetherness, but far enough to give us privacy when needed.

The compound is only a very short (50 yards) from the beach.

One thing to keep in mind is expectations: You are renting a home (or homes) for the length of your stay. There is no maid or laundry service -- you do those things yourself. There is no resort room service. If you want those things then by all means go to the Grand Hyatt (lovely place, and you'll get the pampering you want). But like most resorts, you are at a resort -- they all feel the same.

What makes Hale Pohaku special is the ambiance -- the kind of feeling you can't get at a resort -- a kind of rustic charm.

Now the down side:
* Roosters. Nowhere on Kauai is safe from the chicken/rooster invasion. They *will* wake you up.
* The amenities. Hale Pohaku is a little run-down -- the grills are old and rusty, and they are light on pots & pans, dishes and serving dishes and utensils; The main house's toaster only toasted on one side.

However, we didn't come to Hawaii to sit around inside. Most of the time we were all out and about on different excursions and adventures.

I am so sorry this review has been long time coming. I had a long illness in my family and haven't been up to normal. But Hale Pohaku has been on my mind all the time and we remininsce about our stay there last year. My daughter got married there and we couldn't have found a more perfect place to have the "wedding" and "family reunion". We searched the internent and found other places and when my daughter found Hale Pohaku, I immediately flew there to check it out.

Accomodations were larger than we expected. Things were attended to promptly by Mr. Wynne. Whenever I needed anything, he was right there to handle it. I cannot complain about "ANYTHING". The grounds were awsome. Yes, the houses are older, but they were perfect for our families. Yes, they didn't have air conditioning, but you have the trade winds. Yes, its not the Hilton and if that's what you expect, then stay at the Hilton.

My family, locals and mainlanders, just loved the place. I would return again. It is local accomodations as they were old plantation houses which have been refurbished.

Thank you Richard for all you did for our family. We had a most memorable wedding and just totally "LOVED" staying there.

We just returned to Australia after a 3 week holiday in Kauai. We stayed at Hale Pohaku with 2 sets of grandparents, and 2 young families, each with three children. So in total we were a party of 14. The two young families stayed in the Manager's Residence, one set of grandparents stayed in the studio attached and the other set of grandparents stayed in the Rose Cottage. We could not have found better accommodation if we had TRIED!! It really did suit us to a tee. The manager's residence was so spacious and very much fulfilled our needs as such a large group. Both families had their own bathroom and the kitchen was fun to prepare meals in! My parents LOVED their space in the Rose Cottage and my partner's parents also really liked their space in the studio.
The pool was really terrific (sure it collected some leaves and flowers over time but that didn't bother us at all) and the short stroll to the beach was absolutely wonderful for the kids. Also just a short stroll to Brennecke's Broiler which has terrific ambience and mostly good food.
Being pretty laid back and not into fine linens and crockery, the lack of Egyptian sheets was not an issue. The sheets were soft and clean and lovely to sleep on and there were pots and pans of various shapes/sizes.
If we ever return to Kauai, I will not hesitate to stay here again. The only thing that could improve this experience for us would be a much more thorough cleaning job or at least access to some quality cleaning supplies.
Thanks Richard, you were easy to deal with and we loved that you didn't get in our space at all!! Aloha!
Nellie and crew.

Room Tip: The Rose Cottage is nicest!
