Farm tours are one of the best ways to learn about the importance of agriculture. Our visit to Hawaiian Organic Noni Farm last month was interesting and informative. We'd never heard of the noni fruit and gained an appreciation for its antioxidant potency that is being captured in products such as fruit leather and lotions. This is a worthwhile experience to include on your trip to Kauai. The 37-acre farm is near Kilauea in a stunning location near the coast. There's even an albatross nesting area at the edge of the farm. Noni can literally be picked off the tree and eaten. It's a dimpled, yellowish fruit that is harvested by hand. The seeds are removed and the fruit is then dehydrated in a custom-designed and built dehydrater to become fruit leather. The leather doesn't need refrigeration and can be eaten directly (small amount) or put into tea. The farm also makes lotions to rub on joints, bruises, sunburn, sore muscles, etc. It's chemical free, and the products are also made for dogs, cats and horses. Spend an hour on this beautiful, self-sustaining, organic farm when you visit Kauai to learn more about noni and its rich antioxidant potential.
