Made a side trip. Glad we did - the views were gorgeous. Wish we could have made it to the lighthouse, but they close down around 4/4:30. Made it out right at 4:45. Still worth the side trip for the beautiful views.

Kilauea Lighthouse and the wildlife refuge were pretty cool to see. It's relatively cheap to get in to and was pretty neat to see. I wish you could have gone up in to the lighthouse rather than just look at it from the outside. But it was cool to see all of the birds just across the bay. The lighthouse had binoculars you could check out and use while there (for free with your admission into the lighthouse area) so that was a nice perk. We only spent about 30 minutes walking around so it's definitely not a very long activity (unless you love bird watching) but it's worth the few bucks to get in.

Make the stop, take a few pics. It was free the day we went in honor of Veteran's Day. Nice picture opportunities of the lighthouse, birds and waves down below.

You will probably only spend 30-40 minutes here at most.

A nice break from beach walks and hikes. Loved the locale and the signage, and a chance to see native Hawaiian birdlife up close. Well worth a side trip. And nice to see that local initiative made it happen.

The Wildlife Refuge is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It sits on a promontory and the views are incredible from all three sides. Hawaiian geese, called nenes, wander the property freely and are not camera shy. It can be quite windy, so hold onto your hat. There are bathrooms and the gift shop sells bottled water, but there are no other facilities, however, food should not be consumed on the premises. The pathways are wide enough for wheelchairs, but there is a slight incline.
