Hale Puka 'Ana

I'm overjoyed that my wife and I chose Hale Puka 'Ana as our place to stay on the beautiful island of Kauai. Located on the much more laid-back Western side of the island, you won't see fancy hotels or strip malls for miles. It gives you a spot to steer clear of the touristy spots and be a great "home base" for a trip to Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach. You will need to drive to locations, but for someone who wanted a relaxing vacation, even just the thought of staying in congested Poipu gives me a headache.

Patrick & Jules are wonderful hosts and Koa is the most well-behaved boxer we've ever met! You do share a house with a family, and that family includes an adorable daughter, so you will hear her/them from time to time above you. It was never disruptive nor did it hamper the great experience.

We stayed in the Ali'i Suite, which ended up surpassing my expectations. It's on the lower level with some seating right outside a sliding door along with a private entrance. Zero complaints about the bed, it has a little fridge for some "golden aloha" and the dual shower heads were a welcome surprise! Furnishings were nice and it was clean.

Speaking directly to the latest review from Donald E: yes, at Hale Puka Ana you are located near a road. I'll trade the amazing sunsets and ability to hear the waves hit the rocks for a little bit of road noise. The road noise does come from a "highway" but it's only a highway by name: the speed limit is 35 MPH at that stretch. I would hardly call the road noise an "assault" and it becomes an afterthought after about 8pm. It never woke me up.

What Patrick & Jules offer, a bed & breakfast in the cozy part of Kauai with beautiful sunset views, is exactly what you get. A nice bed in a loving home and delicious breakfast in the morning (we were able to see spouts from whales eating breakfast - how cool is that?). I already miss the french toast...

Room Tip: The Ali'i Suite has a dual shower head!

Hard to understand why this place is so highly rated on Tripadvisor. Incredibly noisy highway(yes, this is a highway with major truck traffic all day and all night: we could not sleep with the door open without the constant assault of road noise). There is no view of the ocean from the downstairs rooms, just a hedge and a dirty tiki bar area. The so-called suite was just a room with a bar(and one stool)separating the bed from the bathroom sinks. Everything is a bit run down, from the bedspread to the outside furniture and the bed is in serious need of replacement!

The same dirty band-aid and used cups were on the floor in the common area the entire stay. Be prepared for the sound of loud footfalls every morning at 6:30 above you as the guests and owners start breakfast service. We learned to sleep with earplugs. Sadly, outside of an under ripe papaya, no local fruit with breakfast; amazing considering Kauai's bounty of apple bananas, pineapple etc.

The location is good for hiking in Waimea Canyon and the west coast beaches. Owners were helpful with local knowledge and Jules made very nice breakfasts. Overall, however, the price for this accommodation does not match the hype and five star reviews.

Mahalo, Don, for your feedback and the opportunity to serve. As always, our preference would have been to address your desires while you were here, thereby providing you the vacation experience you anticipated.
We have discussed the road in front and the subsequent noise in past reviews. In summary, for most it is a non-issue. For those that have concern, we request you call us and we promise honest feedback. Relevant to this review; the comment of there being “Major truck traffic all day and all night” is highly misleading and we would guess is a product of Don’s obvious frustration.
There is a nice hedge between our property and the ocean. We consistently work to manage the height of this hedge as to not be too low or too high. Hedges do grow however! We can only suspect that when Don’ was here the hedge may have been a touch on the tall side. As a recent solution to managing this issue (after Don’s September stay), I have installed measuring posts on each end of the hedge, thereby signaling to our kind gardener, Allen, the maximum height of the hedge. We don’t expect this to be an issue in the future. Again, website pictures and previous reviews confirm the nice ocean view from this room.
The King Sized bed in this room is only a few years old, and I would characterize it as being Medium-Soft. The firmness may be the cause for Don’s concern here. As one can figure, we get all types of people with all types of bed preferences. If you prefer a firmer mattress, we recommend the Hoku Room.
We typically recommend guests to sleep with the doors closed as a security precaution. We have never had a security problem, but feel this is good practice. In addition, we are one of the few properties that offers the luxury of central air conditioning in the summer. Especially during his September stay, Don may have been more comfortable overall with the door closed.
Two months ago, we hired some additional housekeeping help. Cleanliness and organization are to a new level. While we don’t recall Don’s specific items mentioned, it is safe to say we have taken action to ensure this issue does not come up in the future.
We always work to provide unique and enjoyable breakfasts, to include island fruits. As one can figure, various fruits are seasonal, and we make the best of what is available daily.
We would describe our typical guest as the “Early to bed, Early to rise” type. If you like to sleep in late, we are not likely the best fit for you. Our normal guest appreciates that the morning is one of the best times of day on Kauai.
As always, we shoot for 100% guest satisfaction and take any constructive criticism seriously and without personal offence. We hope if you choose to come see our piece of paradise, if your stay is not meeting you expectations, you will give us the opportunity to handle any shortfalls.
Finally, in considering your stay with us, please give heavier weight to the 98+% of good reviews we have. We hope to see you soon.

Just reread my review of this place and decided I sounded a bit snarky about the tiki bar. It's actually very sweet. It's been a few months since we were there and I have to say it stays on our minds. Highly recommend this place and Jule's and Patrick's hospitality.

Exactly what I hoped it would be! Jules and Patrick have a beautiful B&B. Wonderful delicious breakfasts created by Jules. Absolutely the nicest place to be is on the West side of Kauai. My daughter thought that she would have preferred to be around more "ACTION," but decided she loved the West side. I am sure if we ever return to Kauai it will be this wonderful B&B. We had a room on lower level with a beautiful view of the ocean and were lulled to sleep every night by the waves that sounded like distant thunder. I wanted to be away from crowds and get a feel of the real Kauai, I think it was accomplished by staying at Hale Puka ana. The weather is also fantasic on the West side! Thank you Jules, Patrick and Pico for making our first visit to Kauai perfect. Tracy and Mom (Lorrie)

We stayed with Patrick and Jules from 10-31-2013 to 11-4-2013. We loved the laid back atmosphere of Kauai. Patrick said "you know they got four lane roads over there", reffering to Maui. We should have done it Maui, Kauai. But enough of that. Back to the B&B, Our room was downstairs overlooking the water, by the road, with a nice private lanai and a nice natural hedge to hide the traffic. The room was spacious with a king bed, nice little fridge and a walk in shower. Breakfasts were very good, nice variety, and served Hawaiian Style. The traffic is really during the day, after sunset things get real quiet. I mean geckos and surf, nice way to end the day. Caught a fish or picked something up at the market in town, there is a nice gas grill tiki hut at your disposal. You will have wanted to rent a vehicle to reach this gem tucked away on the west shore. Sit up on the top deck at sunset to share the days story and sip your favorite refreshment and watch the sun go down. I was on crutches at the time, and even though I prefered navigating the stairs, the McLeans were more than happy to accomodate me at any time. Here you arrive as a friend and leave as family. I can't thank Patrick, Jules, Pico and Koa, for sharing their little slice of paradise.

Room Tip: There are two bottom rooms facing the ocean, one faces the yard.

Hale Puka Ana is one of the finest B&B establishments my wife and I have visited. Owners Patrick and Jules McLean showed exceptional integrity when we planned our visit: They were completely open to our questions and withheld nothing. Even then, their service was so good it far exceeded our expectations. Besides being the two most charming hosts we've encountered at a B&B, the owners constantly went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. They even made a special trip another town, miles away, to get decaf coffee for me. They supply amenities that we have found at no other B&B including an elevated deck to dine and watch the ocean and sunsets, our own privately screened private lanai (with furniture) at our room with ocean view. The B&B supplies an array of beach gear and a fully furnished outdoor Tiki Bar where we could cook and eat our own food. The hallmarks of a good B&B experience, great food plus great hosts and guests to interact with, were a highlight of our experience. We also loved the McLean's young daughter.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room.

Which is exactly what we wanted. Yes, there is not much night life and you are far from the resorts and crowds of the north shore, but if resorts and crowds annoy you, this is a great place to come. It's true that Polihale beach is better accessed by a four wheel drive vehicle but the plus side is a spectacular beach that is blissfully uncrowded (like 10 people on a beach the size of 20 football fields, maybe more). OK, so there's no glitzy luau. You just have to settle for incredible hiking in breathtaking Waimea canyon. No four star dining either but we packed a cooler with Ahi Poke and hijiki and other goodies and ate lunch overlooking the extraordinary Napali coast. Jules and Patrick provide coolers, large beach towels, and umbrellas. Of note, we are a gay couple and sometimes we feel a little pull back from B&B owners, however everyone here was warm and gracious, including J & P's assistant (Nancy? I forget her name.) and their adorable daughter, Pico. They provide excellent advice about all the areas attractions. Breakfasts are hearty and tasty and the king size bed in our room was super comfy. It seemed like one of the more negative reviewers was expecting something luxurious but that is so out of line with this area that it's an illogical desire. There were some very small downsides. 1. It's true that the beach directly in front of the house has washed away, but it is only a 1 minute drive to MacArthur Park beach and a 15 minute drive to spectacular Polihale. Plus, the shoreline changes in Hawaii so maybe it will come back. 2. The road in front of the house can get busy. Just look at it as the comings and goings of a very small town. We didn't find it disturbing. 3. Some people might feel that the property is not isolated enough from other houses. It's essentially a house in a neighborhood, but that's was Kekaha is: a neighborhood at the far edge of Kauai. 4. The tiki bar is a little silly. If it was us we'd just have a nice grill area. Hey we're gay guys so we have to throw in some comments about decorating. Think twice about booking here. If you're looking for the Ritz, bars, nightlife, and cocktails on a crowded beach, don't come here. If you're looking for a base to explore the entire island, it's too far on the western fringe. But if you're looking for unspoiled Hawaii and a homey, comfortable place to stay while exploring this glorious region, it is a very nice spot indeed.

Big Mahalos (thanks) for your 5 star review! As owners and managers we agree with what you say; with one small exception.
Kauai is a smaller island than some may realize. In driving to the farthest point from us, it would likely take 90 minutes. Most of our guests appreciate having the best weather at our place and going to visit the “Rainforest” type locations when the weather is good. This reviewer stayed here in the summer. Especially in fall/winter/spring; rain on other sides can be a significant factor. Average rainfall for the NE side is 85in/year while our SW side is 15-20in/year.
Fancy hotels, restaurants, shopping, and some nightlife are an easy 20ish minutes away. You choose how much you want.
Come stay in the sun with us and visit the other close by attractions when the weather is in your favor.
Hale Puka`ana is a great home base if weather is important on your vacation.
