Owner description: Chocolate From Branch to Bar begins with a stroll through the Steelgrass gardens, winding among groves of rare black bamboo, tropical flowers, and exotic fruit trees. The focus of the three-hour tour is on chocolate, but you will also experience dozens of exotic plants and flowers, and taste the tropical fruits that are in season as your guides share our family's vision for creating sustainable diversified agriculture on Kauai.Soon we reach the chocolate orchard, where you'll see chocolate trees at all stages of growth, often bearing tiny blossoms that will develop into seed-filled cacao pods. We then move into our chocolate tasting tent, and you sit comfortably in the shade while we demonstrate the many steps involved in processing raw cacao into nibs and then finished chocolate. Cacao is recognized as a powerful health food; as you taste the way fermentation and sun-drying transform the seed's flavor precursors into the rich chocolate we all love, your guide will explain chocolate's antioxidant and other health benefits. Best of all, you’ll enjoy an eleven-course dark chocolate tasting, where you sample rare and delicious chocolates grown and made in Hawaii and all over the world, including Kallari and Republica del Cacao from Ecuador, Valrhona from Madagascar and Trinidad, Guittard from Peru, Santander from Colombia, Felchlin and Taza from the Dominican Republic. You’ll also learn chocolate’s history, from its first discovery by early Meso-American tribes, to its revered status as a divine plant in the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec cultures, to its introduction to Europe in the 1600’s, and finally how an American inventor, Milton Snavely Hershey, made the nickel Hershey bar (1905) and the Hershey’s kiss (1907) enduring American institutions. Our Chocolate from Branch to Bar tour runs from 9AM to noon, and is offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Advance reservations are required. Cost for the tour is $60 per person, and children 12 years and under attend free of charge. Steelgrass Farm is located on Kauai's East Side, in the foothills above the town of Kapaa. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will send you written driving directions to the Farm. The Tour is handicapped accessible, and since chocolate trees love moisture, we operate rain or shine.

“Awesome Tour!”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

While most of our tours were already planned before arriving in Kauai, we checked with our condo concierge for a way to kill a few hours one day. She suggested this tour and I'm glad she did. The farm is a little hard to find, so leave extra time in case you miss the entrance like we did. You head through a development before arriving at the check-in point. My husband was a bit skeptical upon first arriving, but this ended up being one of his favorite experiences from our trip. After everyone arrives, you head down the hill and the guides explain different plants/trees located on the farm. You then get to taste around 10-12 different types of tropical fruits generally only found at farmers markets. There were enough for seconds if you wanted them. Then they take you to the tent for chocolate tasting. You get a sheet where you can write down tasting notes and rate the chocolates. You taste around 10 different types of chocolates. Again, there was plenty for seconds or thirds if you had trouble deciding which was your favorite. You can then purchase the chocolate back up at the check-in point. We purchased two different chocolate bars and a couple bags of "nibs" which I keep munching on when I need a pick me up.

“Unique tour-educational and yummy!”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

My family and I recently toured the Steelgrass Chocolate Farm. Nancy and Tiana were very good tour guides; very informative with the right amount of humour thrown in. We had the opportunity to see many unique plants and taste many unique tropical fruits that were growing right on the farm, including cacao, which is the fruit that chocolate is made from. The chocolate tasting was the highlight by far and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, especially chocolate lovers.

“Awesome tour...”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

My husband and I decided to make this visit a nice relaxing one. So we decided to take this our and loved it. The tour guides, Michelle and Nancy were awesome and knowledgeable. They worked very well as a team. I will just say that I agree with most of the comments that have been posted and I would totally recommend it to the people who love chocolate and want to learn more about the production. Even if you are not a chocolate lover like myself, you would still enjoy the scenery, the unique fruits and the great tour guides.

“Fun chocolate and fruit tasting tour”
Reviewed November 21, 2013

Relaxing and really fun to taste more than 10 different chocolates made by small companies that make eco/organic friendly/fair priced chocolates. Tour of the garden filled with interesting plants and fruiting trees was handled well by 2 very friendly, knowledgeable and funny guides. We would highly recommend visiting this family owned farm and seeing the amazing growth of trees that can be accomplished on Kauai in 10 years.

“A Delicious and Educational Experience for Chocolate Lovers”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

A co-worker recommended this tour to me, and it was even better than I expected! At $60/person it's a little pricey, but we, a party of 8 adults, all thoroughly enjoyed it. The first part of the three hour tour is a tour of the tropical fruit garden, including the opportunity to taste some unusual tropical fruits plus the farm's honey. That was a great experience by itself - I enjoyed sampling the pulp and beans from a ripe cacao pod that was opened in front of us. Topping it off with the blind tasting of 10 different chocolates made it even better. The chocolate samples were small, but even so, that's a lot of chocolate to eat in an hour or so. I wish they would have offered us bottled water or something else to cleanse our palates between chocolates. Our tour was almost 50 people. They kept us moving along very well, but still, a smaller group would have been nicer. The two guides were entertaining and well-informed, which made it more fun. At the end we had the opportunity to purchase honey and vanilla beans from the farm, as well as full-size versions of the chocolate bars we had sampled. Be aware that all of the chocolate is dark chocolate (60% or higher).

By all means use the insect repellant wipes provided at the start of the tour, and take an umbrella (or bring your own) if there are any suspicious-looking clouds. There is some walking involved, and be aware that the garden/tasting pavilion is located at the bottom of a fairly steep hill. They have a SUV available to transport people who do not want to walk down/up the hill.

We will do this again if we go back to Kauai, and highly recommend it for chocolate lovers.
