“Adequate, but far from stellar”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

I would agree with many of the previous reviewers who commented on the pool and room size. This was our 3rd Kauai vacation, and our first stay in Kapa'a. It's often a gamble when you go to a place for the first time, having to rely mostly on reviews. We found the staff to be quite helpful, especially our housekeeper. Even though we knew our room was 320 sq ft, it's hard to visualize until you step into the room. The lanai was the size of a postage stamp, with barely room for 2 chairs and no table. The bathroom was so small (with no outside sink) that the door grazed the front of the toilet when opening and closing. Still, the beds were comfy and the bar food was good. I think the $14/day parking charge is a pure scam. Never once did I see anyone checking cars for tags, so we might as well have burned that $140. Why on earth would you keep the pool at polar temperatures in a tropical place? Because the days weren't scorching during our visit, very few people actually used the pool, but crowded into the hot tub instead. I'm happy that we were sent a survey when we got home, as I was able to share my concerns with Marriott. On the bright side...we loved seeing and hearing the ocean from our room and the variety of birds was delightful. One morning they mowed the lawn with a rider mower, and about 25 egrets were following along, looking for treasures that may have been unearthed in the mow. Nature abounds in Kauai, and that really kept us from thinking too much about the shortcomings of the Courtyard.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

Stayed for 5 days in January at the hotel in an executive larger bedroom ocean front and overall it was a an average experience –not a bad base for visiting Kauai. As with my reviews I will list out the pros and the cons/things to consider.

Pros:
1.Room size and location – On our trip to Hawaii we stayed on all the islands and we decided that for at least one we would spend the extra money and get an ocean front room. The room is huge – king sized bed, couch and seating area (there is a round coffee table which is nice if you want to eat in the room – which we did a couple times when we ordered takeout - Kilauea Fish Market, Kauai Pasta- or brought something from the safeway). The bathroom is small but in this room you also get a sink area outside the bathroom which is open to the room. It was quite convenient because it meant I could get ready by the sink (do makeup, dry hair, brush teeth etc.) without getting in the way of my husband. Without this feature the bathroom would have been very cramped. There was lots of closet space and a desk that allowed us to set up our laptop on.

In terms of location it was well placed if you wanted to drive to other parts of the island because it is the midpoint to going up north and the midpoint to going down south. I do have to caution that it is more rainy than the south/west side of the island (e.g. Poipu) but you could also drive there and hang out on the beach if you wanted. It was a short drive to the airport and there is enough food options in the area to satisfy you (we enjoyed Bobby V’s – good pizza and BYOB). No stellar high quality restaurants within walking though.

2.Amenities - pool (though it is cold), lots of sun loungers which you can have by the pool…by the beach (though it can be windy …we were here in winter and there were tradewinds so it was a bit blustery). Restaurant and bar (we never ate here but got some beers while lounging around the pool). There are also tennis courts. There is free Wifi in the room and around the hotel and a business area to print off boarding passes. Big parking lot (though you had to pay for parking)

3.Price – overall it was reasonable for what you got in terms of room standard and ameneties for the hotel (and we paid in advance).

Cons/Things to think about:

1. Room layout and cleanliness – while the room was large it had a lot of dead space…they could have set it up better. Also, as people mentioned, it was a bit dark. As for cleanliness - it was average and things are worn. It was tolerable for a mid-range hotel.

2. Bed – the sheets were old and there was a stain on it (I had them change it after the first night). The bed was also hard so I didn’t sleep that well (it was probably the worst bed of our stay and put a damper on the experience).

3. Ants: yes there are ants. Do not leave out any food. Whenever we ate in we would throw out our garbage in the trash cans by the pop/soda machines. We bought cereal and even though we had the box closed they still got in (but if you can store stuff in the tiny fridge then you are fine – but note it is a standard small hotel room sized fridge).

4. Noise: Not sure if all the large rooms are adjoining rooms but ours was (room 317). That meant we could hear everything going on in the room next door to us as the soundproofing doesn't work when you don't have a full seal under the door. This was not a huge problem as there was a person beside us only one night but I imagine, given the size, that families may want these rooms and it could get loud.

5. Balcony: so this was a positive and a caution. For the room we had we had a large balcony that looked onto the ocean …we were also on a quite side of the hotel away from the pool. The chairs we had were padded (the regular rooms only have plastic chairs). So the balcony was a highlight…being able to look at the ocean with uninterrupted views (except for the local who came every morning to do his yoga and I swear a drug deal went down on the property adjacent to the hotel….cars would show up…someone would get into a car, stay a couple of minutes, get out of the car and then the cars would drive away). On the negative side, when it rained the rain came onto the balcony (so you could not sit out in the rain if it was raining hard) and the padded seats would be drenched. The patio door was rusted out from the ocean salt…but the sound of waves at night was worth it. The balconies for the other rooms were small and cramped so it was definitely worth it for the size and the view.

My husband and I stayed here the 1st week of February. Pros: Great time of the year to stay in Kauai-the weather was usually perfect, just rains a good amount. The whales are there Dec-May. There were tons of them! Luckily, my husband and I did a ton of activities on this trip (it was my 1st time in Hawaii). All we did here was sleep pretty much. Beds are adequate. Very good location! Right in the middle, doesn't take too long to get South or North. However, there is lots of construction now. There is plenty of local things to do here. The restaurants are usually not open past 9pm though, and we are night owls. Here starts the cons: Our view was only a partial ocean view, and it does tend to get noisy with the bands/entertainment (we didn't find these entertaining). This courtyard marriott was not my fav place-I am MUCH more a fan of resorts. It is not all-inclusive. Just for breakfast-granted it's a buffet but it's $18, not including a drink. The parking fee is a total rip off! $14 per day. And you're their guest!! Pool temp was too chilly-and I love swimming. Hot tub is nice, but people flood it usually. Never saw anyone in the pool throughout our whole stay. Ocean not for swimming here. Rooms smaller than I expected, and bathrooms def, had to inch in just to get around. We had a Groupon deal. They made us check in twice because we bought 2 groupons to extend out stay. So, they also charged us two separate fees for taxes-came out to an extra $120 to Courtyard we were not planning on/unaware of. A.C was a strange unit-it would randomly turn on for like a minute, than back off-when it wasn't reading the temp correctly. We had to keep resetting it, and it would always go back to too cold. The staff is hit or miss-some really lazy people/don't want to do anything to help, or the honest workers. We will definitely be back to Kauai, but not to this Courtyard Marriott.

We stayed in first floor and moldy smell was so strong that we had to open the door quite frequently for the smell out. And the front desk service was the worst I ever met in the Marriott chain hotels as a platinum member. The location was good though for this hotel since it is close to coconut marketplace and a few restaurants.

Room Tip: No first floor

We picked this hotel because it was a great value for a decent quality and the location in Kappa was close to the airport and a good base to be able to drive around the whole island (about an hour to drive to the south and an hour to drive to the north). We had an oceanfront room that was huge and we left the sliding door open at night so that we could hear the waves, so soothing!

The staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great as well as the happy hour. We didn't really use the pool at all because the temperature was a bit cold and the hot tub was always packed with like 10 people. The should really add another hot tub to the property.

If you are planning to hang out at the hotel, I would not choose this one, but it is great for just an average room for a fair price when you want to do lots of other activities around the island.

I loved being right on the beach. The community areas of this hotel are very nice, very inviting. The pool area is lovely and has an expansive view of the beach. The hotel puts plenty of chairs out on the beach as well.

I had a garden view room which faced the tennis courts. Small balcony. It was great to have the door open during my entire stay.

Food in the restaurants is OK. The staff are very friendly and helpul. On busy nights, they seem a bit overwhelmed in the bar. They have a pretty steady flow of events - hula show one or two nights a week, live musice in the pool/bar area.

This place is within walking distance of plenty of food, drug store, grocery stores, restaurants. I would definitely stay here again.

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

We are staying in this hotel for 3 nights during our honey moon and everything is going wrong since we checked in. We first got a "garden view room" with a terrible parking view, we asked for another room and got a room with a better view but still not a real garden view (tennis court and parking). Then the first night we had sound issues with the AC, it went crazy at 5am and sounded like a hoover and woke us up. We called the front desk but they only partially solved the problem after several calls and 35min. The next day it did it again and this time, the front desk told me nobody was there from the technical team and they couldn't do anything till 7am or later...
We had to go at the front desk before living for the day and we had to reexplain our problem, since they wouldn't even believe us, we had to show a video we took with our mobile phone...
The technician called for our problem explained that it was the bathroom air evacuation system that worked from 5 to 10 am automatically and that he couldn't do anything without affecting the entire system. So we got a third room and had to pack again.
We arrived in our room wich was OK, but there was trash in the bathroom and stains on the towells... And this room has like the thinest walls ever, we could hear our neighbors, caughing, listening to the TV or chatting...
We have a last night tonight and we are glad to leave the hotel tomorrow !!

Not to mention there parking lot wich is a fraud, they make us pay 14 USD per night to put the car on there open air parking lot with no surveillance and when you come back from a day out or from dinner you have to circle all around the hotel to find a free space. Unbelievable, there are cars circling around every night on the quietest island from Hawaii like we are in NYC.

We are honeymoon tripping for 3 weeks now and went to over 10 different hotels on the west coast and Hawaii, and it's the worst place we could find...

THANK YOU COURTYARD, BUT NO THANKS
